Abdominal CT scanning in reproductive-age women with right lower quadrant abdominal pain: does its use reduce negative appendectomy rates and healthcare costs?

Although acute appendicitis is the most frequent cause of the acute abdomen in the United States, its accurate diagnosis in reproductive-age women remains difficult. Problems in making the diagnosis are evidenced by negative appendectomy rates in this group of 20 per cent to 45 per cent. Abdominal CT scanning has been used in diagnosing acute appendicitis, but its reliability and usefulness remains controversial. There is concern that the use of CT scanning to make this diagnosis leads to increased and unwarranted healthcare charges and costs. The purpose of our study is to determine if abdomi

Financial Toxicity in Plastic Surgery: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Financial toxicity (FT) describes the physical, psychosocial, and financial burden of health care-related costs on patients' well-being. Plastic surgery patients may be susceptible to FT due to high procedure and adjunct therapy costs. Despite these risks, FT resulting from plastic and reconstructive surgery remains unclear. This scoping review assessed the prevalence and impact of FT on plastic surgery patients. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature were searched from inception through

Impact of Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) on access to spine surgery at a tertiary care centre in North India: A retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Access to complex, resource-intensive procedures such as spine surgery is often limited for economically disadvantaged populations due to high out-of-pocket expenditure. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was launched to mitigate these costs, yet data on its specific impact on spine surgery remains limited. This study aims to analyse the impact of PM-JAY on access to spine surgery at a tertiary care centre in North India. METHODS: A retrospective, single-centre observational study was conducted analysing all spine surgeries performed from January 2023 to

Endoscopic Ultrasonography-Guided Gastroenterostomy Is More Cost Effective Than Surgical Gastrojejunostomy: A Health-Economic Evaluation Alongside a Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on the cost-utility of endoscopic ultrasonography-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) compared with surgical gastrojejunostomy (SGJ) as palliative treatment of malignant gastric outlet obstruction. METHODS: In the ENDURO trial, 98 patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction from 12 Dutch hospitals were randomized between EUS-GE (N = 48) and SGJ (N = 50). Cost utility was evaluated from a healthcare perspective with a time horizon of 1 month. A bottom-up approach was used to calculate the costs of each intervention, including the per-minute price of

Productivity losses and treatment cost of benign prostatic hyperplasia in Ghana.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition among ageing men, characterized by lower urinary tract symptoms that significantly impact the quality of life and economic productivity of affected individuals. The financial burden of BPH extends beyond direct medical expenses to include direct non-medical costs and productivity losses. In Ghana, limited data exist on the cost implications of BPH, leaving a critical gap in healthcare planning and resource allocation. We aimed to determine the cost and productivity losses associated with diagnosing and managing BPH at the Ho Teaching Hos

Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Prostate Cancer Screening Rate.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obesity are at a greater risk of developing more aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Bariatric surgery has been demonstrated to reduce that risk; however, the exact mechanism of this protective effect is not known. We examined the relationship between bariatric surgery and prostate cancer screening rates using a national insurance database. STUDY DESIGN: Using the Merative MarketScan Database, 13,662 men aged 50 to 65 years in the US who underwent bariatric surgery were identified and compared with 3 control groups who did not undergo bariatric surgery, stratified b

A Single-Institution Cohort Study of Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma Gel for Hard-to-Heal Chronic Wounds: Potential Role in Microvascular Regeneration.

Background/Objectives: Chronic wounds that fail to respond to standard wound care (SWC) remain a major clinical challenge. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an advanced regenerative therapy that delivers platelet-derived growth factors involved in angiogenesis and tissue repair. However, clinical data in Asian populations and evidence regarding ulcers associated with vasculitis or microangiopathic ischemia remain limited. This study evaluated the efficacy, safety, and treatment frequency of autologous PRP gel prepared using the newly approved AutoloGel System® in Japan. Methods: This single-center

Patient and family-centered concerns in pediatric cardiac surgery: a Middle Eastern perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease affects approximately 1% of live births worldwide and remains among the most significant contributors to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of them require surgical or percutaneous interventions at some stage. Patient care involves critical situations including clinical, psychological, social, regional, and cultural practices. Family and patients go through stressful experiences. Through this review, we aim to highlight issues faced by the patients or their families during management of complex cardiac conditions and hope that medical pers
