Preoperative prediction of vessels encapsulating tumor clusters in hepatocellular carcinoma based on CT findings and des-γ-carboxy prothrombin level.

BACKGROUND: Vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) has been associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the preoperative prediction of VETC remains insufficient. We established the VETC predictive score based on CT findings and clinical data in patients with HCC. METHODS: A total of 209 patients were enrolled, and we investigated clinical features and computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with VETC-positive HCC. The preoperative VETC predictive score was established based on the odds ratios calculated by logistic regression analysis using identified

Association Between Monocyte-to-High-Density Lipoprotein Ratio and Diabetic Nephropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and a leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. Inflammation and dyslipidemia play central roles in its pathogenesis. The monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) has emerged as a composite biomarker integrating proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways, but its association with DN has not been systematically synthesized. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the association between MHR and DN and quantified the differences in MHR between d

GSK484 attenuates placental endothelial injury and improves gestation outcome in rats with preeclampsia by inhibiting PAD4-mediated neutrophil extracellular traps formation.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious pregnancy disorder, but its pathogenesis has not been well elucidated and has no effective pharmacological therapy. Here we investigated the potential protective effect of GSK484, a selective inhibitor of peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4), on PE in rats and the underlying mechanisms. PE was induced in pregnant rats by intravenous injection of low-dose lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and the general manifestations of PE were examined. The effects of GSK484 on placental expressions of PAD4 and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), formation of neutrophil extr

Neurovascular phase coherence is altered in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the commonest form of dementia, but its cause still remains elusive. It is characterized by neurodegeneration, with amyloid-beta and tau aggregation. Recently, however, the roles of the vasculature and the neurovascular unit are being highlighted as important for disease progression. In particular, there is reduced microvascular density, and altered gene expression in vascular and glial cells. Structural changes naturally impact the functioning of the neurovascular unit, and the goal of the study was to quantify the corresponding changes in vivo, non-invasively. Our asse…

Semaglutide restores astrocyte-vascular interactions and blood-brain barrier integrity in a model of diet-induced metabolic syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a metabolic disorder related to obesity and insulin resistance and is the primary determinant of the development of low-intensity chronic inflammation. This continuous inflammatory response culminates in neuroimmune-endocrine dysregulation responsible for the metabolic abnormalities and morbidities observed in individuals with MetS. Events such as the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue, increased plasma concentrations of free fatty acids, tissue hypoxia, and sympathetic hyperactivity in individuals with MetS may contribute to the activation of th

Prevalence of stable coronary artery disease and its associated clinical factors among patients with chest pain and elevated cardiac troponin alone.

Cardiac troponin is a useful test for diagnosing cardiogenic causes in patients with chest pain. However, cardiac troponin levels are often elevated in patients with chest pain due to non-cardiac causes other than coronary artery disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its associated factors in patients with chest pain and elevated cardiac troponin I (cTnI). 104 patients (mean age, 65 ± 11 years; 60 [58%] men) who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) for chest pain and elevated cTnI levels were enrolled in this study. The divergent effects of astrocyte ceruloplasmin on learning and memory function in young and old mice.

Ceruloplasmin (CP) plays an important role in maintaining iron homeostasis. Cp gene knockout (Cp-/-) mice develop a neurodegenerative disease with aging and show iron accumulation in the brain. However, iron deficiency has also been observed in 3 M Cp-/- mice. The use of systemic Cp gene knockout is insufficient to reveal specific functions for CP in the central nervous system. Considering recent discoveries that astrocytes synthetize the majority of brain CP, we generated astrocyte conditional Cp knockout (CpGfapcKO) mice, and found that iron contents decreased in the cerebral cortex and hipp

Invasion as limitation to anti-angiogenic glioma therapy.

The inhibition of tumor angiogenesis could be an efficient therapeutic strategy for the treatment of malignant gliomas. Prominent neovascularization is induced by these tumors, and microvascular proliferation is a malignancy grading criterion. However, glioma cells can also invade the brain diffusely over long distances without necessarily requiring angiogenesis. Experimentally, it was shown that especially during early stages of growth in rodent brain, glioma cells can coopt the preexistent host vasculature to recruit their blood supply in the absence of neovascularization. This phenomenon wa

Brain capillaries in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of irreversible dementia, affecting mostly the presenile and senile age, shaping a tragic profile in the epilogue of the life of the suffering people. Due to the severity and the social impact of the disease an ongoing research activity is in climax nowadays, associated with many legal, social, ethical, humanitarian, philosophical and economic considerations. From the neuropathological point of view the disease is characterized by dendritic pathology, loss of synapses and dendritic spines, affecting mostly selective neuronal networks of critical imp
