Automatic Diagnosis of Ocular Toxoplasmosis from Fundus Images with Residual Neural Networks.

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is commonly diagnosed through the analysis of fundus images of the eye by a specialist. Despite Deep Learning being widely used to process and recognize pathologies in medical images, the diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis(OT) has not yet received much attention. A predictive computational model is a valuable time-saving option if used as a support tool for the diagnosis of OT. It could also help diagnose atypical cases, being particularly useful for ophthalmologists who have less experience. In this work, we propose the use of a deep learning model to perform automati

Man against machine reloaded: performance of a market-approved convolutional neural network in classifying a broad spectrum of skin lesions in comparison with 96 dermatologists working under less artificial conditions.

BACKGROUND: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) efficiently differentiate skin lesions by image analysis. Studies comparing a market-approved CNN in a broad range of diagnoses to dermatologists working under less artificial conditions are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred cases of pigmented/non-pigmented skin cancers and benign lesions were used for a two-level reader study in 96 dermatologists (level I: dermoscopy only; level II: clinical close-up images, dermoscopy, and textual information). Additionally, dermoscopic images were classified by a CNN approved for the European marke

Distinct neural networks associated with obsession and delusion: a connectome-wide association study.

BACKGROUND: Obsession and delusion are theoretically distinct from each other in terms of reality testing. Despite such phenomenological distinction, no extant studies have examined the identification of common and distinct neural correlates of obsession and delusion by employing biologically grounded methods. Here, we investigated dimensional effects of obsession and delusion spanning across the traditional diagnostic boundaries reflected upon the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) using connectome-wide association studies (CWAS). METHODS: Our study sample comprised of 96 patients

An Intelligent and Low-Cost Eye-Tracking System for Motorized Wheelchair Control.

In the 34 developed and 156 developing countries, there are ~132 million disabled people who need a wheelchair, constituting 1.86% of the world population. Moreover, there are millions of people suffering from diseases related to motor disabilities, which cause inability to produce controlled movement in any of the limbs or even head. This paper proposes a system to aid people with motor disabilities by restoring their ability to move effectively and effortlessly without having to rely on others utilizing an eye-controlled electric wheelchair. The system input is images of the user's eye that

Extraction of Retinal Layers Through Convolution Neural Network (CNN) in an OCT Image for Glaucoma Diagnosis.

Glaucoma is a progressive and deteriorating optic neuropathy that leads to visual field defects. The damage occurs as glaucoma is irreversible, so early and timely diagnosis is of significant importance. The proposed system employs the convolution neural network (CNN) for automatic segmentation of the retinal layers. The inner limiting membrane (ILM) and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) are used to calculate cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) for glaucoma diagnosis. The proposed system uses structure tensors to extract candidate layer pixels, and a patch across each candidate layer pixel is extracted,

Region Based Parallel Hierarchy Convolutional Neural Network for Automatic Facial Nerve Paralysis Evaluation.

In this article, we propose a parallel hierarchy convolutional neural network (PHCNN) combining a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network structure to quantitatively assess the grading of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) by considering the region-based asymmetric facial features and temporal variation of the image sequences. FNP, such as Bell's palsy, is the most common facial symptom of neuromotor dysfunctions. It causes the weakness of facial muscles for the normal emotional expression and movements. The subjective judgement by clinicians completely depends on individual experience, which may not

The Design of a Parkinson's Tremor Predictor and Estimator Using a Hybrid Convolutional-Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is considered to be the second most common age-related neuroegenerative disorder, and it is estimated that seven to ten million people worldwide have PD. One of the symptoms of PD is tremor, and studies have shown that wearable assistive devices have the potential to assist in suppressing it. However, despite the progress in the development of these devices, their performance is limited by the tremor estimators they use. Thus, a need for a tremor model that helps the wearable assistive devices to increase tremor suppression without impeding voluntary motion remains. In

Investigation of exhaust emissions of an isolated diesel engine blended with ethylhexyl nitrate using experimental and ANN approach.

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) implementations and oxygenated additives are remarkable issues that may decrease the exhaust emissions of engines. This study examines the effect of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) coating and the addition of ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) on exhaust emissions of a diesel engine. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was designed which estimates exhaust emissions based on engine speed in order to reduce time, labor, and costs lost in experimental studies, and the performance of the ANN was evaluated. Piston crown and valves of engine were processed with Cr2O3. Th

Grading the severity of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborn EEG using a convolutional neural network.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a valuable clinical tool for grading injury caused by lack of blood and oxygen to the brain during birth. This study presents a novel end-to-end architecture, using a deep convolutional neural network, that learns hierarchical representations within raw EEG data. The system classifies 4 grades of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and is evaluated on a multi-channel EEG dataset of 63 hours from 54 newborns. The proposed method achieves a testing accuracy of 79.6% with one-step voting and 81.5% with two-step voting. These results show how a feature-free approach can

FetNet: a recurrent convolutional network for occlusion identification in fetoscopic videos.

PURPOSE: Fetoscopic laser photocoagulation is a minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). By using a lens/fibre-optic scope, inserted into the amniotic cavity, the abnormal placental vascular anastomoses are identified and ablated to regulate blood flow to both fetuses. Limited field-of-view, occlusions due to fetus presence and low visibility make it difficult to identify all vascular anastomoses. Automatic computer-assisted techniques may provide better understanding of the anatomical structure during surgery for risk-free laser photocoagulatio

Soft Nanomembrane Sensors and Flexible Hybrid Bioelectronics for Wireless Quantification of Blepharospasm.

Blepharospasm (BL) is characterized by involuntary closures of the eyelids due to spasms of the orbicularis oculi muscle. The gold standard for clinical evaluation of BL involves visual inspection for manual rating scales. This approach is highly subjective and error prone. Unfortunately, there are currently no simple quantitative systems for accurate and objective diagnostics of BL. Here, we introduce a soft, flexible hybrid bioelectronic system that offers highly conformal, gentle lamination on the skin, while enabling wireless, quantitative detection of electrophysiological signals. Automated Cytomegalovirus Retinitis Screening in Fundus Images.

This work proposes an automated algorithms for classifying retinal fundus images as cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR), normal, and other diseases. Adaptive wavelet packet transform (AWPT) was used to extract features. The retinal fundus images were transformed using a 4-level Haar wavelet packet (WP) transform. The first two best trees were obtained using Shannon and log energy entropy, while the third best tree was obtained using the Daubechies-4 mother wavelet with Shannon entropy. The coefficients of each node were extracted, where the feature value of each leaf node of the best tree was the

Saliency-driven system models for cell analysis with deep learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Saliency refers to the visual perception quality that makes objects in a scene to stand out from others and attract attention. While computational saliency models can simulate the expert's visual attention, there is little evidence about how these models perform when used to predict the cytopathologist's eye fixations. Saliency models may be the key to instrumenting fast object detection on large Pap smear slides under real noisy conditions, artifacts, and cell occlusions. This paper describes how our computational schemes retrieve regions of interest (ROI) of clinic

The Feasibility of Arrhythmias Detection from A Capacitive ECG Measurement Using Convolutional Neural Network.

Capacitive ECG (cECG) can measure the cardiac electrical signal via capacitive coupling between electrodes and skin. This unconstrained measurement is suitable for personal heart monitoring; however, the instability in the quality of the signal hinders a further use of the signal. To use the cECG for heart monitoring, an adapted framework that could automatically classify the signal into clear cECG, arrhythmias and noise signal is a prerequisite. In view of this problem, the conventional quality estimation method using predefined features based on R-peak detection is not suitable for this unco

Supporting Play by Applying Haptic Guidance Along a Surface Learnt from Single Motion Trajectories.

Haptic-enabled teleoperated robots can help children with physical disabilities to reach toys by applying haptic guidance towards their toys, thus compensating for their limitations in reaching and manipulating objects. In this article we preliminarily tested a learning from demonstration (LfD) approach, where a robotic system learnt the surface that best approximated to all motion trajectories demonstrated by the participants while playing a whack-a-mole game. The end-goal of the system is for therapists or parents to demonstrate to it how to play a game, and then be used by children with phy

Unsupervised Phase Learning and Extraction from Repetitive Movements.

Phase extraction from repetitive movements is one crucial part in various applications such as interactive robotics, physical rehabilitation, or gait analysis. However, pre-existing automatic phase extraction techniques are specific to a target movement due to some handcrafted-features. To make it more universal, a novel unsupervised-learning-based phase extraction technique is proposed. A neural network architecture and a cost function are designed to learn the concept of phase from records of a repetitive movement without any given phase label. The method is tested on a rat's gait cycle and
