Eye movement abnormalities after a ruptured intracranial aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: Overlooking eye movement abnormalities associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is common, although these abnormalities may greatly affect quality of life. Their prevalence remains undetermined. The aim of the study was to assess preoperative and postoperative eye movement abnormalities and their recovery in follow-up of patients with aSAH and their association with age, gender, and aSAH severity. METHODS: Patients admitted to Helsinki University Central Hospital who underwent surgery or endovascular treatment for a ruptured intracranial aneurysm during 2011 were p

Genetic association analysis of ERBB4 polymorphisms with the risk of schizophrenia and SPEM abnormality in a Korean population.

The human receptor tyrosine-protein kinase erbB-4 (ERBB4) gene mediates neuregulin 1 (NRG1) signaling, and is involved in neuronal migration and differentiation. Despite the potential significance of ERBB4 in the development of schizophrenia, relatively few genetic studies for the association of ERBB4 with schizophrenia were performed in the populations including Ashkenazi Jews, Americans including Caucasians and African Americans, and Han Chinese. In this study, differences in ERBB4 variations were investigated to determine association with schizophrenia and smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM)

Eye movement abnormalities in spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 (SCA17).

BACKGROUND: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 (SCA17) is associated with an expansion of CAG/CAA trinucleotide repeats in the gene encoding the TATA-binding protein. In this quantitative characterization of eye movements in SCA17 mutation carriers, we investigated whether eye movement abnormalities originate from multiple lesion sites as suggested by their phenotypic heterogeneity. METHODS: Eye movements (saccades, smooth pursuit) of 15 SCA17 mutation carriers (mean age 36.9 years, range 20 to 54 years; mean disease duration 7.3 years, range 0 to 20 years; 2 clinically unaffected, 13 affected) w

Endoscopic intranasal reduction of the orbit in isolated blowout fractures.

CONCLUSION: Endoscopic intranasal reduction of the orbital floor with a detachable temporary balloon, or of the medial orbital wall with a silastic sheet and Merocel packing, provided good functional results and definite advantages. We suggest that these techniques are another surgical alternative for isolated orbital floor or medial wall blowout fractures that do not accompany any associated fractures of the orbital rim. OBJECTIVES: Extended applications of endoscopic sinus surgery have reported endoscopic intranasal reduction or reconstruction of the orbital wall with good functional and co

Brain stem and cerebellar findings in Joubert syndrome.

Joubert syndrome is often missed clinically and radiologically if not enough attention is paid to its subtle and variable clinical presentation and the imaging findings in the posterior fossa. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the brain stem and cerebellar imaging findings in Joubert syndrome. Awareness of the clinical and neuroimaging findings in Joubert syndrome and maintenance of a high index of suspicion are essential to correctly diagnose this rare congenital malformation.

[Kinsbourne syndrome: review of our cases].

INTRODUCTION: The childhood opsoclonus-myoclonus or Kinsbourne syndrome, is a uncommon process, of acute or subacute beginning, which affects infant and children. It's course is characterized by opsoclonus, polimyoclonias and cerebellar ataxia. The disease is frequently associated to neuroblastoma (46%). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a retrospective study on 9 patients, emphasizing the clinical presentation and the evolution aspects. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We found changes in the EEG in three cases. Most surprising is the scarce incidence of neuroblastoma, which has been found only in a

Ocular neuromyotonia: three case reports with eye movement recordings.

The objective of this article was to evaluate the etiologies, findings, and treatment of ocular neuromyotonia (ONM) in three case reports. The etiologies of ONM were determined by the histories, neuroradiologic tests, or biopsies. Clinical observations, videotaping, and electronic eye movement recordings documented the eye movement abnormalities. Intermittent diplopia developed several years after myelography with thorium dioxide (Thorotrast), radiation treatment for a pituitary tumor, and radiotherapy for medulloblastoma of the posterior fossa. All of the patients had intermittent, variable t

Ependymomas of the third ventricle.

Third ventricular ependymomas are rare tumors that have not been specifically examined. Four cases of these tumors are reported. The presenting symptoms included headache, ataxia, vertigo, and Parinaud's syndrome. All the patients underwent computed tomographic scanning and cerebral angiography, followed by craniotomy and microsurgical resection of the tumor. In addition, all patients had or developed symptomatic obstructive hydrocephalus requiring shunting procedures. Three of the patients are alive with a follow-up of 4 to 12 years. It is remarkable that these tumors are so rare, given that

Visual and ocular motor function in the atypical form of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation type I.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) type I is a rare disease that can be divided into a classical or atypical variant, according to age of onset and clinical pattern. Neuro-ophthalmological involvement has been documented in the classical variant but only anecdotically in the atypical variant. We sought to describe the visual and ocular motor function in patients with atypical form of NBIA type I. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, including patients with genetically confirmed NBIA type I and classified as atypical variant, who underwent ophthalmological examin

Visual-perceptual impairment in children with periventricular leukomalacia.

We set out to define visuo-perceptual impairment related to periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) using the Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP). Correlations were sought between visual-perceptual deficits and DTVP profile and neuroradiological and neurophthalmological findings. The DTVP was administered to 20 children (m/f: 10/10), aged between 5 and 8 years (mean: 6.95 years), presenting with: spastic diplegia; PVL documented by brain MRI; normal or mildly impaired visual acuity; mild-moderate upper limb functional impairment. The mean General Visual-Perceptual Quotient was impaired,

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Diagnosed After a Severe Fall Trauma in a Patient Who Experienced Episodes of Easy Falling.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is characterized by parkinsonism, downward gaze disorder, and a tendency to fall due to degeneration of the basal ganglia, the brain stem, and the cerebellum. We report a case of PSP that was diagnosed following a traumatic hemopneumothorax caused by a fall while descending stairs. A 79-year-old man experienced lightheadedness and frequent falls for two years. He fell on stairs at home and was transferred to our hospital due to mobility issues. He was hospitalized and treated for traumatic hemopneumothorax. Neurological examination revealed vertical ocular

Ocular Motor Abnormalities in Anti-IgLON5 Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Anti-IgLON5 disease forms an interface between neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration and includes clinical phenotypes that are often similar to those of neurodegenerative diseases. An early diagnosis of patients with anti-IgLON5 disease and differentiation from neurodegenerative diseases is necessary and may have therapeutic implications. METHODS: In our small sample size study we investigated oculomotor function as a differentiating factor between anti-IgLON5 disease and neurodegenerative disorders. We examined ocular motor and vestibular function in four patients suffering from
