[Poisoning with selected mushrooms with neurotropic and hallucinogenic effect].

Picking mushrooms, especially in summer and autumn, is still very popular in Poland. Despite raising awareness of poisonous mushrooms in the Polish society, year after year hospitals treat many patients diagnosed with poisoning with the most common toxic species of mushroom found in our country. Furthermore, growing interest in hallucinogenic mushrooms among young people has become a serious medical problem of our time. Websites make it incredibly easy for people to obtain information on the morphology and appearance of mushrooms with psychoactive properties, which leads inexperienced pickers

Systemic autonomic function in subjects with primary angle-closure glaucoma: a comparative study of symptomatic and asymptomatic disease presentation.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is thought to be a contributory factor in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) by precipitating pupil block in anatomically predisposed eyes. This study aimed to compare systemic autonomic function between subjects who had suffered a previous episode of acute angle closure (symptomatic PACG), those who had asymptomatic PACG, and age and sex-matched controls. METHODS: Tests for systemic parasympathetic function included the heart-rate response to standing (30:15 ratio), heart-rate variation during deep breathing, and the ratio of the heart rate at phases IV a

Obesity-induced hypertension: interaction of neurohumoral and renal mechanisms.

Excess weight gain, especially when associated with increased visceral adiposity, is a major cause of hypertension, accounting for 65% to 75% of the risk for human primary (essential) hypertension. Increased renal tubular sodium reabsorption impairs pressure natriuresis and plays an important role in initiating obesity hypertension. The mediators of abnormal kidney function and increased blood pressure during development of obesity hypertension include (1) physical compression of the kidneys by fat in and around the kidneys, (2) activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and (3) i

Diurnal Variation in and Optimal Time to Measure Holter-Based Late Potentials to Predict Lethal Arrhythmia after Myocardial Infarction.

Background and Objectives: Holter-based late potentials (LPs) are useful for predicting lethal arrhythmias in organic cardiac diseases. Although Holter-based LPs exhibit diurnal variation, no studies have evaluated the optimal timing of LP measurement over 24 h for predicting lethal arrhythmia that leads to sudden cardiac death. Thus, this study aimed to validate the most effective timing for Holter-based LP testing and to explore factors influencing the diurnal variability in LP parameters. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 126 patients with post-myocardial infarction (MI) st

Heart rate variability and pulmonary dysfunction in rats subjected to hemorrhagic shock.

BACKGROUND: The activity of autonomic nervous system and its association with organ damage have not been entirely elucidated in hemorrhagic shock. The aim of this study was to investigate heart rate variability (HRV) and pulmonary gas exchange in hemorrhagic shock during unilateral subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into groups of Sham, vagotomized (Vag), hemorrhagic shock (HS) and Vag + HS. HS was induced in conscious animals by blood withdrawal until reaching to mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) of 40 ± 5 mmHg. Then, it was allowed to MAP re

Evidence for bidirectional and trans-synaptic parasympathetic and sympathetic propagation of alpha-synuclein in rats.

The conversion of endogenous alpha-synuclein (asyn) to pathological asyn-enriched aggregates is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). These inclusions can be detected in the central and enteric nervous system (ENS). Moreover, gastrointestinal symptoms can appear up to 20 years before the diagnosis of PD. The dual-hit hypothesis posits that pathological asyn aggregation starts in the ENS, and retrogradely spreads to the brain. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by directly injecting preformed asyn fibrils into the duodenum wall of wild-type rats and transgenic rats with excess levels of

A Compartmental Model for Simulating the Gut-Brain Axis in Gastric Function Regulation.

Gastric function is regulated by the gut-brain axis, which integrates vagal and enteric nervous system (ENS) pathways. The parasympathetic circuit within the vagal pathway promotes digestion by stimulating peristaltic activity and relaxing the Pyloric sphincter (PS) through motor and sensory neurons. In contrast, the sympathetic pathway inhibits digestion by suppressing peristalsis and constricting the PS, highlighting the complex neural coordination involved in gastric regulation. This study introduces a novel mathematical model of the gut-brain axis using a computationally efficient compartm

Autonomic balance and cardiovascular hemodynamic function in men with prolactinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Endocrine disorders associated with prolactinoma (PR) in men may affect the interaction between the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of sympathetic-parasympathetic balance, assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, with cardiovascular hemodynamic function, assessed by impedance cardiography (ICG) and applanation tonometry (AT), in men with newly diagnosed PR. METHODS: In this observational cohort study, 20 men with newly diagnosed PR and no significant comorbidities were included. A correlation anal

Oxytocin's social and stress-regulatory effects in children with autism and intellectual disability: a protocol for a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin is increasingly considered as a new pharmacological option for mitigating social difficulties and regulating stress in autism spectrum disorder. However, in prior trials, autistic individuals with co-occurring intellectual disability (ID) have largely been overlooked, despite their high prevalence, poorer outcome, and the enhanced need but reduced availability of therapeutic interventions. Prior studies have also overlooked the importance of standardizing the context in which oxytocin is administered, rendering outcomes from prior trials inconclusive. METHODS: To meet the

Comprehensive Assessment of Autonomic Nervous System Profiles in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Among Syncope, Chronic Fatigue, and Post-COVID-19 Patients.

Background/Objectives: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia characterized by excessive tachycardia during orthostatic stress. It is frequently observed in patients with syncope, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), yet the underlying mechanisms may differ across these conditions. This study aimed to assess autonomic nervous system (ANS) function in patients with syncope, CFS of insidious onset, and CFS post-COVID-19 who presented with POTS, and to compare them with age- and sex-matched patients without POTS. Methods: In this re

Development of autonomic innervation at the venous pole of the heart: bridging the gap from mice to human.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal development of autonomic innervation of sinus venosus-related structures might be related to atrial arrhythmias later in life. Most of the pioneering studies providing embryological background are conducted in animal models. To date, a detailed comparison with the human cardiac autonomic nervous system (cANS) is lacking. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological and functional development of the cANS between mouse and human, specifically aimed at the venous pole. METHODS: Wildtype mouse embryos (E9.5-E18.5) and healthy human fetuses (6-38 weeks gestational ag

Relationship between heart rate variability and inflammation induced by physical exercise in a sedentary healthy population.

Heart rate variability (HRV) evaluates autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, and in disease conditions a reduction in HRV is associated with inflammation. We hypothesized an association between HRV and physical exercise-induced inflammation in healthy conditions. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between HRV and plasma cytokines before and after exercise, assessing the influence of sex. Sedentary young subjects (22 females, 16 males) underwent HRV evaluation through a chest band, at rest and 15 min and 48 h after a step-exercise performed until exertion, assessing R-R interval, RMSSD, l

Cardiovascular and pulmonary response in Internet gaming disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a behavioral addiction characterized by impaired control over gaming. While its psychological aspects are well-documented, its physiological correlates, particularly those governed by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), are less well-synthesized. Heart rate variability (HRV) and pulmonary function are key indicators of cardiorespiratory health and ANS regulation. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of IGD on chronotropic (as measured by HRV) and ventilatory responses, both at rest and during active gaming. METHODS: We searched Pu

Alterations in heart rate following radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of reentrant supraventricular arrhythmias: relation to alterations in autonomic tone.

To determine the relation between the creation of endocardial lesions and alterations in autonomic tone, we analyzed heart rate variability in patients undergoing radiofrequency catheter ablation for symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia. Elevated heart rates are frequently noted after radiofrequency catheter ablation for supraventricular arrhythmias. It has been postulated that this elevation may be secondary to alterations in cardiac autonomic tone. Since heart rate variability is a measure of autonomic nervous system activity, we used this technique to examine the heart rate elevation an

Pheochromocytoma and functional paraganglioma syndrome: no longer the 10% tumor.

Pheochromocytomas and abdominal paragangliomas are catecholamine-producing tumors of the sympathetic nervous system, while head and neck paragangliomas are non-secreting tumors of parasympathetic origin. Recent developments in clinical and molecular research on these tumor forms have significantly clarified their genetic backgrounds and challenged the view of "pheochromocytoma as the 10% rule tumor." Firstly, a larger proportion of these tumors are today discovered in normotensive patients during imaging carried out for other reasons than suspicion of pheochromocytoma. Secondly, although the d

Assessment of local sympathetic function in patients with erectile dysfunction.

Fifty men with erectile dysfunction (ED) were urologically investigated for autonomic deficit by evaluation of the sympathetic skin response at the penis. They were additionally subjected to thorough urological, vascular, psychiatric and neurological examinations, and well-established neurophysiological tests of the somatosensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic function. Patients with clinical evidence of neurological deficit showed abnormal results (68%) in at least one test of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic skin response at the penis was absent in 11 cases (37%) with clinica
