BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Drug-dependent people exhibit biases when evaluating discrete emotional facial expressions. Little is known about how drug abusers process multiple expressions presented simultaneously. The present study investigated the number perception of schematic emotional expressions by abstinent heroin abusers.
METHODS: Eighty-four heroin abstainers with varied lengths of abstinence (short-term, mid-term, and long-term) and twenty healthy controls were examined. A method of limits was deployed to obtain estimates (points of subjective equality) of perceived numbers of schemat

Recent studies have shown that children with mathematics difficulties (MD) have weaknesses in multiple areas of mathematics. Andersson, for example, recently found that children with MD perform significantly worse than other children on clock reading tasks. The present study builds on this recent finding and aims at a more profound understanding of the difficulties that children with MD experience with telling time. Therefore, clock reading abilities of 154 children with MD were compared to the abilities of 571 average achieving children, and a qualitative error analysis was performed. The res

Given the distributed representation of visual features in the human brain, binding mechanisms are necessary to integrate visual information about the same perceptual event. It has been assumed that feature codes are bound into object files--pointers to the neural codes of the features of a given event. The present study investigated the perceptual criteria underlying integration into an object file. Previous studies confounded the sharing of spatial location with belongingness to the same perceptual object, 2 factors we tried to disentangle. Our findings suggest that orientation and color fea

Previous research has shown that suspects in real-life interviews do not display stereotypical signs of nervous behaviours, even though they may be experiencing high detection anxiety. We hypothesised that these suspects may have experienced cognitive load when lying and that this cognitive load reduced their tonic arousal, which suppressed signs of nervousness. We conducted two experiments to test this hypothesis. Tonic electrodermal arousal and blink rate were examined during task-induced (Experiment 1) and deception-induced cognitive load (Experiment 2). Both increased cognitive difficulty

Superior performance on the Embedded Figures Task (EFT) has been attributed to weak central coherence in perceptual processing in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural basis of EFT performance in 7- to 12-year-old ASD children and age- and IQ-matched controls. ASD children activated only a subset of the distributed network of regions activated in controls. In frontal cortex, control children activated left dorsolateral, medial and dorsal premotor regions whereas ASD children only activated the dorsal premotor region.

Motion is known to distort visual space, producing illusory mislocalizations for flashed objects. Previously, it has been shown that when a stationary bar is flashed in the proximity of a moving stimulus, the position of the flashed bar appears to be shifted in the direction of nearby motion. A model consisting of predictive projections from the sub-system that processes motion information onto the sub-system that processes position information can explain this illusory position shift of a stationary flashed bar in the direction of motion. Based on this model of motion-position interactions, w

In January 2005, J.R. Hughes and M. Melyn published an electroencephalographic study on autistic children and found 46% with seizures and also a relatively high prevalence of 20% with epileptiform discharges but without any clinical seizures (Clin EEG Neurosci 2005;36:15-20). Because the discharges have always been viewed as focal events and the clinical seizures as requiring spread, the conclusion from these data was that children with autism may have a deficiency of corticocortical fibers. Since that time many MRI and functional MRI studies have been published confirming that one of the firs

BACKGROUND: Pre-clinical and clinical studies have shown acute stress may impair working memory and visuo-spatial ability. This study was designed to clarify the nature of stress-induced cognitive deficits in soldiers and how such deficits may contribute to operational or battlefield errors.
METHODS: One hundred eighty-four Special Operations warfighters enrolled in Survival School completed pre-stress measures of dissociation and trauma exposure. Subjects were randomized to one of three assessment groups (Pre-stress, Stress, Post-stress) and were administered the Rey Ostereith Complex Figure

BACKGROUND: Decision-making is a complex and important function for daily life that can be assessed quantitatively using a simple two-choice prediction task. Bipolar disorder (BD) patients are thought to show altered responsivity to positive and negative feedback. In this study we examined whether BD patients with psychotic mania show altered patterns of decision-making as a function of the frequency of incorrect predictions or error rate.
METHODS: Fourteen adult DSM-IV-diagnosed BD patients with psychotic mania and 14 normal comparison subjects (NC) were tested with a two-choice prediction t

The amygdala has been implicated in the mediation of emotional and species-specific social behavior (Kling et al., 1970; Kling and Brothers, 1992; Kluver and Bucy, 1939; Rosvold et al., 1954). Humans with bilateral amygdala damage are impaired in judging negative emotion in facial expressions and making accurate judgements of trustworthiness (Adolphs et al., 1998, 1994). Amygdala dysfunction has also been implicated in human disorders ranging from social anxiety (Birbaumer et al., 1998) to depression (Drevets, 2000) to autism (Bachevalier, 1994; Baron-Cohen et al., 2000; Bauman and Kemper, 199

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine whether preattentive and attentive visual processing, the cognitive psychological dichotomy on normal vision, indeed activate the parieto-occipital systems differentially as suggested by recent neuropsychological research. The activation paradigms consisted of feature detection and discrimination of line orientation, and visual fixation, which corresponded to preattentive, attention-requiring, and baseline conditions, respectively. The detection versus fixation contrast revealed activation sites in the right lateral prefrontal co

BACKGROUND: Recognition of individual faces is an integral part of both interpersonal interactions and successful functioning within a social group. Therefore, it is of considerable interest that individuals with autism and related conditions have selective deficits in face recognition (sparing nonface object recognition).
METHOD: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study face and subordinate-level object perception in 14 high-functioning individuals with autism or Asperger syndrome (the autism group), in comparison with 2 groups of matched normal controls (normal control

BACKGROUND: We determined the nature and recovery of procedural and declarative memory functioning in a cocaine-abusing cohort in the 45-day period following use.
METHODS: Thirty-seven cocaine abusers and 27 control subjects were administered the following memory and mood measures: California Verbal Learning Test, recall of the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, Pursuit Rotor Task, and Profile of Mood States at 4 visits (within 72 hours of admission and at 10, 21, and 45 days following abstinence).
RESULTS: Analysis of performance on the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test revealed that both

Panic patients with agoraphobia were compared with normal controls on tasks of face recognition. The subjects were presented with 20 photos, and were required to make a judgement of the persons on the photos; shortly afterwards they were unexpectedly presented with a recognition task. In the first study, one task was to judge whether the persons on the photos were critical or accepting: unlike social phobics (Lundh and Ost, 1996b, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 34, 787-794), panic patients showed no bias for critical vs accepting faces on the recognition task. In a secondary study, the task w

In an attempt to develop a protocol for evaluating mentally retarded clients from a neurobehavioral perspective, a strategy for screening complex verbal, simple verbal, simple visual, and spatial working memory was developed. This strategy results in numeric values on each of the aspects of memory, and it can contribute to a "global index" of memory function. The strategy is described so that it might be adopted by other practitioners interested in screening their client's ability to store and retrieve newly acquired information. Descriptive data for 125 persons carrying diagnoses of mild, mod

The saccadic eye movements, generated during a visual oddball task, of autistic children, normal children, children with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADDH), and dyslexic children were examined to determine whether autistic children differed from these other groups in saccadic frequency. Autistic children made more saccades during the presentation of frequent stimuli (than normals and ADDH children), and between stimulus presentations. Also, unlike the normal and dyslexic groups, their saccadic frequency did not depend on stimulus type. This abnormal pattern of saccades may neg

The purpose of the present study was to design an object recognition task in mice and characterize the effects of scopolamine in this paradigm. This task consisted of exposing mice for 6 or 10 min to an object in an open field (trial 1) and, after a delay (1-24 h), testing mice for 10 min with the object and a novel object (trial 2). Mice explored the novel object more than the familiar object as the inter-trial delay decreased and/or the duration of trial 1 increased. Administration of scopolamine (0.3, 1 and 3 mg kg-1, s.c.) before trial 1 reduced recognition performance on trial 2 after a 3

Researchers have demonstrated that people with mental retardation have deficits in processing facial expressions of emotion. The ability of 18 aggressive and 21 nonaggressive men with borderline to moderate mental retardation to label and discriminate facial expressions was investigated. Although results did not support the hypothesis that aggressive participants would have greater difficulty with emotion labeling and discrimination compared to their nonaggressive peers, they do suggest that aggressive individuals may have a negative emotional bias for facial expressions that are ambiguous to

The aim of this paper is to study the recognition of facial expression of emotions in depressed patients with major depressive disorder (MD) and schizotypal personality disorder (STP). The pictures of sad, emotionally neutral, and happy faces followed by a masking stimulus were displayed for 80 msec on a computer screen randomly in the left or right hemifield of vision (LHF and RHF). The subjects had to respond by pressing a three position key. Multiple analysis of variance revealed that all depressed patients, relative to control subjects, made more errors in a task of recognition of facial a

Effects of rehearsal strategy and attribution training on strategy use and transfer were investigated with 12-year-old students who had mild or moderate mental retardation. Students were randomly assigned to four groups that received either rehearsal strategy training, attribution training, combined rehearsal and attribution training, or no training. Both rehearsal strategy groups outperformed the others at maintenance. However, at transfer, only the combined strategy and attribution group performed better than the attribution and control groups. For students with mental retardation, strategy
