SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related cutaneous manifestations: a systematic review.

To date, over 250 million people have been reportedly infected by COVID-19 disease, which has spread across the globe and led to approximate … carial rashes, angioedema, herpes zoster, morbilliform/maculopapular/erythematous macular eruption, pityriasis rosea and pityriasis rosea-like eruptions, and other less common dermatological manifestations. Flares of pre-existing dermatological conditions were also reported. Cutaneous adverse reactions following SARS-CoV-2 vaccine administration seem to be h …

Case for diagnosis. Atypical Grover's disease.

A 55-year-old male presented with an eight-month history of erythematous papules and plaques with demarcated areas of spared skin on his trunk, upper extremities, neck, and face. Grover's disease is a rare, acquired disorder of unknown origin, which is classically characterized by the appearance of erythematous papules on the upper trunk that are usually transient. As in the present case, there are reports of atypical disease, with facial involvement, pityriasis rubra pilaris-like lesions, and a more chronic course.

[Off-label indications of biological drugs in dermatology].

Last years, the development of biological drugs substantially improved the outcome of many inflammatory diseases. In dermatology, this kind of therapy is essentially prescribed for the treatment of psoriasis, and include the anti-TNF, anti-IL-12/IL-23 and anti-IL-17. Despite these treatments have not yet been approved, they seemed to be efficient for the treatment of many other inflammatory dermatosis, like granulomatous diseases, neutrophilic diseases, hydradenitis suppurativa or pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Parapsoriasis lichenoides/parapsoriasis variegata--a new concept.

We present a new concept on the nosology of parapsoriasis lichenoides (= parakeratosis variegata) and show that this parapsoriasis type is not a separate entity. It represents different diseases: a large number of cases presenting as reticular parapsoriasis are mycosis fungoides, another group represents reticular variants of the parapsoriasis guttata group (pityriasis lichenoides acuta et chronica). Further, cases exist that can be classified as lichen planus reticularis or other diseases (e. g. keratosis lichenoides).

Amino acid metabolism of Malassezia furfur.

The mechanism responsible for the hypopigmentation which follows pityriasis versicolor (P.V.) infection has not yet been satisfactorily explained. This work was done in order to study the effect of Malassezia furfur on the decomposition or the utilization of the amino acid tyrosine in vitro. No effect could be noted, which points to the assumption that the effect of the causative fungus of P.V. on melanogenesis is most probably due to the blocking of melanine synthesis by one of the product of M. furfur metabolism without using tyrosine.

Benign and neoplastic eosinophilic staining cells: an immunofluorescence study.

Deposition of immunoglobulins, complement and fibrinogen on eosinophilic staining cells was investigated using direct immunofluorescence techniques. Serum factor deposition was detected on benign epidermal eosinophilic cells seen in pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta, sunburn erythema and, in addition, on subepidermal hyaline bodies in lichen planus; no such deposition occurred on neoplastic eosinophilic cells in Bowen's disease and squamous cell carcinoma. The qualitative findings of immunofluorescence microscopy seem to be different in inflammatory and malignant dermatoses.

Sickle cell anemia in an American white boy of Greek ancestry.

A 7-year-old American white boy of Greek ancestry had sickle cell anemia. The disease in this patient was not accompanied by painful episodes or recognizable hematologic complications, although he did demonstrate considerable delay in skeletal maturation. The patient sought medical attention for a dermatologic problem that was ultimately diagnosed as pityriasis rubra pilaris. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstrated example of sickle cell anemia in a white male described in the United States.

Benign and malignant hybrid adnexal tumors in a patient with epidermodysplasia verruciformis.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a genodermatosis characterized by overgrowth of flat warts, pityriasis versicolor-like lesions and an increased propensity for developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas due to abnormal susceptibility to infection with beta-human papilloma viruses. Adnexal tumors are not typically associated with EV. Here we report a spectrum of hybrid adnexal tumors with divergent eccrine and folliculosebaceous differentiation, and cytologic features ranging from benign to frankly atypical, in a patient with inherited EV.

A review and update of the clinical uses of cyclosporine in dermatology.

Cyclosporine is a hitherto unique immunosuppressive agent that has provided a new approach to therapy in autoimmune diseases and has been increasingly used as a molecular tool for the investigation of immune regulation. It has produced excellent therapeutic responses in the treatment of psoriasis, acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau, pyoderma gangrenosum, lichen planus, pityriasis lichenoides chronica, Behçets disease, and alopecia areata. Cyclosporine's mechanism of action, side effects, pharmacokinetics, and guidelines for patient monitoring, are discussed in this article.

Tolciclate versus miconazole, a double-blind trial in patients with dermatomycosis.

Eighty-one patients with dermatomycosis such as tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis and pityriasis versicolor were treated with tolciclate 1% cream or miconazole 2% cream. Parasitological cure was obtained in 100% of the patients given tolciclate and in 97.4% of those given miconazole. Patients and investigator considered tolciclate treatment as excellent, respectively, in 76.2% and 73.8% of the cases. The corresponding figures for miconazole were 74.4% and 66.7%. Both treatments were well tolerated.

Retinoid hepatitis.

A 65-year-old woman treated with etretinate for pityriasis rubra pilaris developed chronic active hepatitis. The elevated transaminases were noted 2 months after initiation of therapy and peaked 2 months after discontinuation of etretinate. The spectrum of liver toxicity induced by etretinate is reviewed. We suggest that reported cases of retinoid-induced liver disease can be divided into four distinct categories: nonspecific reactive hepatitis, acute hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, and severe fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Presentations of Cutaneous Disease in Various Skin Pigmentations: Chronic Atopic Dermatitis.

Description Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder classically affecting flexural areas of the body. It is present in children and adults, including those with darker skin pigmentation. Chronic lesions are hyperpigmented plaques that are dry, cracked, and/or scaly often with lichenification. Differential diagnoses include psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, ichthyosis, and pityriasis rosea. This article will showcase clinical images with varying presentations of chronic atopic dermatitis in a range of age groups and skin colors according to the Fitzpatrick scale.

[Septicemia caused by Malassezia furfur].

A case of septicaemia caused by Malassezia furfur in a newborn patient receiving intravenous nutrition is presented. M. furfur, the well known cause of pityriasis versicolor, is a strict lipophilic yeast, with predilection for indwelling catheters conducting lipid solutions. Since the diagnosis of M. furfur is hampered by the slow growth and the requirement of lipid containing growth media, one must keep the organism in mind when signs of septicaemia occur in a patient receiving parenteral nutrition, especially in premature infants.

Parapsoriasis and related conditions.

Classification of parapsoriases is revised into a simple practical table. Pityriasis lichenoides (guttate parapsoriasis) is not a type of parapsoriasis. The clinical features of small patch and large plaque parapsoriasis are described in detail. Six clinical varieties of large plaque parapsoriasis and three clinical varieties of exfoliative dermatitis including Sézary syndrome have been clearly recognized as distinctive categories. Histopathology is useful for the diagnosis of parapsoriasis and mycosis fungoides. Sézary cell count is not significant for the diagnosis of Sézary syndrome.

Febrile Ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann Disease: A Case Report and Review of Literature in the Paediatric Population.

Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD) is a rare fulminant variant of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) that is characterized by a large ulceronecrotic appearance with high fever and a variety of systemic symptoms. We report here a case of FUMHD in a 17-year-old male Chinese patient who was treated successfully with a combination therapy of methotrexate, methylprednisolone, and intravenous immunoglobulin. In addition, a literature review was conducted to summarize the key characteristics of paediatric FUMHD cases.

Pigmentary problems in the tropics.

Pigmentary problems are one of the most frequent causes of dermatologic consultation in the tropics. This article deals with diseases seen mostly in tropical countries (ashy dermatosis, lichen planus pigmentosus, frictional dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, and pinta) and in which a combination of racial, ecologic, nutritional, and social factors all contribute. Other common dermatoses seen worldwide, such as vitiligo and melasma, sometimes acquire dramatic expressions in tropical countries, and their management is usually difficult even for the most experienced dermatologists.

Psoriasiform dermatitides: A brief review.

Psoriasis vulgaris (PV)-the prototypical "psoriasiform" dermatitis-may assume a spectrum of histologic appearances, depending on whether it has been treated or not. Because of that relative lack of morphological uniformity, other skin disorders that feature epidermal acanthosis, with or without associated inflammation, may be confused diagnostically with PV. This brief review considers the clinicopathologic attributes of PV and its imitators, including chronic spongiotic dermatitides, lichen simplex chronicus, prurigo nodularis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, psoriasiform secondary syphilis, and Re…

Demodex-associated dermatologic conditions--A coincidence or an etiological correlate. Review with a report of a rare case of sebaceous adenoma.

Demodex folliculorum is a saprophytic mite of the human pilosebaceous unit with a prelidiction for facial skin and eyelashes. Infestation occurs frequently without symptoms; however, suppurative or granulomatous inflammation may be seen with high mite density. Skin lesions, such as rosacea, pityriasis, and blepharitis, have been attributed to Demodex; however, its role in sebaceous adenoma (SA) has not been reported in extensively searched medical literature. We report this rare case and review the skin lesions associated with Demodex folliculorum.

Update on the genus Malassezia.

Malassezia yeasts are commensals of normal human skin, but also cause pityriasis versicolor, seborrhoeic dermatitis and evidence is accumulating that they play a significant role in atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS; formerly atopic dermatitis). The taxonomy of the genus has changed considerably and is likely to change more in the future. Our understanding of the interaction between Malassezia and the host demonstrates that it has the paradoxical ability to both stimulate and suppress the immune response directed against it and there is a fine balance in its existence at the interface be…
