BACKGROUND: To investigate the relationship between pre-pregnancy obesity, and urinary symptoms, especially urinary incontinence, before, during, and 6-18 months after delivery.
METHODS: Body Mass Index extracted from obstetric records. Postal questionnaire. MATERIAL AND SETTING: One hundred and eight women with Body Mass Index of at least 30 kg/m2 delivered at the Obstetric Department, Herning Central Hospital, October 1994 to September 1995. As control served 108 matched, normal weight women delivering during the same period.

A woman with acute fatty liver of pregnancy developed fulminant hepatic failure after delivery, a time when spontaneous recovery was expected. Pancreatitis and multiple organ failure was documented and intensive treatment in a critical care unit was needed to support organ function. She underwent plasmapheresis due to extreme hyperbilirubinemia and coma. She recovered completely.

A 32-year-old woman with a history of Graves' disease had an episode of thyrotoxicosis 2.5 months after her first childbirth. Because of low thyroidal uptake of Tc-99m pertechnetate, a diagnosis of postpartum painless thyroiditis was made and the patient was observed without medication. After the normalization of serum levels of thyroid hormones, a second wave of thyrotoxic symptoms emerged. The problem of a foreign body left in the operative field is rarely discussed in the medical literature despite the multiple complications it might cause. The purpose of this article is to report on a patient who developed an enterovaginal fistula secondary to a pack left in the pelvis to temponade post-hysterectomy bleeding. The fistula closed spontaneously after three months of expectant management. Expectant management of enterovaginal fistulae is feasible. Adequate reporting of the operative procedures performed and the use of tagged sponges is a must.

Black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobes are part of the normal vaginal flora and contribute to a range of superficial and deep genital infections. The authors report the case of puerperal thrombosis of the right ovarian vein complicated by recurrent small pulmonary emboli in a 32 year old woman. The clinical features of this rare condition are reviewed. The echographic, angiographic and CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities are described. Records from Florida Agricultural Experiment Station dairy herd for 1144 heifers freshening from 1959 to 1979 were studied to evaluate effects of age and problems at parturition on subsequent yield and reproduction. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who underwent a section caesarean and 24 hours later a laparotomy for treatment of a ruptured subcapsular liver hematoma due to a HELLP syndrome. The HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets count) is a serious complication of the pregnancy with or without eclampsia. This complication has a high mortality and morbidity and can occur during the pregnancy or after delivery. The diagnosis of a subcapsular hematoma of the liver should be considered in patients with acute abdominal pain in the last trimenon or just after delivery.

Intraerythrocyte potassium was determined on samples from 198 physiologic, 88 hypertensive and 92 diabetic pregnant women. An increasing trend was observed during puerperium after the day 3, but a significant difference among the groups was not detected. These results may be due to a wider involvement of other cations (sodium, calcium) in the pathophysiology of pregnancy.
