Cognitive rigidity is mirrored by autonomic inflexibility in daily life perseverative cognition.

Mind wandering (MW) can be persistent and therefore has been included in the repetitive thinking conceptualization. In line with a dimensional view of psychopathology, we hypothesized the existence of a MW-Perseverative Cognition (PC) continuum, where the latter is characterized by a rigid and defensive pattern with attentional, behavioral, affective, and autonomic perseverative manifestations. Ambulatory heart rate (HR) and variability (HRV) of 42 participants were recorded for 24h. Approximately every 30 min during waking, subjects reported their ongoing thoughts and moods using electronic d

"Influence of diet on mood and social cognition: a pilot study".

Recently, a relationship has been observed between nutrition and social cognition. In this aspect, several dietary patterns, or even some probiotics, have been reported as social cognition modulators. However, to date, no studies have reported the effects of specific nutrients. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between dietary macronutrients and the processing of social and affective information. Participants were undergraduates from the University of Extremadura (Badajoz, Spain) aged 21.3 ± 2.9 years., with a BMI of 22.8 ± 3.9 (kg m-2). The students' social cognition and diet were anal

Gaba-producing lactobacilli boost cognitive reactivity to negative mood without improving cognitive performance: A human Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Cross-Over study.

BACKGROUND: Psychobiotic bacteria are probiotics able to influence stress-related behavior, sleep, and cognitive outcomes. Several in vitro and human studies were performed to assess their physiological potential, to find strains having psychotropic activity in humans, and to elucidate the metabolic pathways involved. In our previous in vitro study, we identified two strains Levilactobacillus brevis P30021 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P30025, able to produce GABA and acetylcholine, being promising candidates to provide an effect on mood and cognitive performance. AIM: To investigate the

Impact of a brief HRV-biofeedback intervention on emotion regulation following a real-life stressful event: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Although studies indicate that Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRV-BFB) interventions seem to increase physiological regulation, their effects on broader aspects of emotion regulation during stress recovery remain inconsistent. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of a brief 6-min HRV-BFB intervention on different aspects of emotion regulation and well-being after exposure to a real-life stressor. METHOD: For this purpose, a randomized, parallel-group (1:1), controlled and monocentric trial was conducted following exposure to a naturalistic stressor in me

The mediating effect of intrusive rumination on the relationship between illness uncertainty and fear of cancer recurrence in breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Recently, increased awareness of early diagnosis and treatment options has led to an increase in the number of breast cancer survivors. Psychosocial interventions to increase the quality of life in this group are gaining importance. One of the most common psychological problems in breast cancer survivors is fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). It is essential to elucidate the mechanisms of FCR. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of intrusive rumination on the relationship between illness uncertainty and FCR in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: The study was design

The relationship between work requirements and mental distress in hospital staff: the chain mediating effects of rumination and work recovery classes.

BACKGROUND: Heavy work requirements can lead to significant increases in depression anxiety and stress among hospital staff. However, there is limited research considering the role of work recovery (WR) and rumination in this relationship, particularly how poor WR can create a vicious cycle of negative psychological outcomes for medical staff. OBJECTIVE: In this cross-sectional observational study, the aim is to explore high-risk WR classes among hospital staff. By constructing chain mediation models according to the WR classes, the study seeks to identify which class of medical staff is most

The role of trait anger, rumination, and locus of control in the relationship between trauma, stress, and premenstrual disorders.

The aim of this study was to look for mediators of the relationship between established risk factors (trauma and stress) and the symptoms of premenstrual disorders. The study was divided into two parts: with a retrospective (N = 339; aged 18-47, M = 24,23; SD = 5.23) and a prospective (N = 76; aged 18-44, M = 25.85; SD = 6.09) measure of premenstrual symptoms. The tested mediators were rumination, external locus of control, and trait anger. While all variables were significantly correlated, only trait anger mediated the relationship between stress and retrospectively measured premenstrual symp

Depressive symptoms among kidney transplant recipients: Modeling stress-related pathways involving chronotype, perceived stress, rumination, and sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are common among kidney transplant recipients and are linked to adverse clinical and psychosocial outcomes. Chronotype may influence vulnerability to stress and emotional dysregulation, yet its psychosocial pathways to depression remain unclear. This study tested a stress process model to explain how chronotype, as a background factor, affects depressive symptoms through perceived stress, rumination, and sleep quality. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study involving 508 kidney transplant recipients was conducted in southern China. Participants completed

Distinct neural correlates between suicide attempters with major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders: a multimodal imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide attempters (SA) with mild diagnoses other than major depressive disorder (MDD) are underexplored. This study aimed to investigate neuroimaging abnormalities in SA with MDD (SA-MDD), SA with other psychiatric disorders (OPD) (SA-OPD), and healthy controls (HC) using MRI data. Associations between altered findings in the patient groups and anger, negative schema, or rumination were further examined. METHODS: We recruited SA who visited the emergency department and divided them into two groups: SA-MDD (n = 52) and SA-OPD (n = 24). Age-, sex-, and education-matched HC) (n = 10

Daily rumination and diurnal cortisol patterns in Latino adolescents: The moderating role of sex.

Latinos make up the fastest-growing ethnic minority group in the United States and are at higher risk for the development of internalizing symptoms in adolescence than other ethnic groups. Rumination has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor associated with several internalizing disorders such as depression, anxiety, and comorbidities of the two. Indicators of risk for chronic stress and internalizing disorders can also be observed from the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (e.g., diurnal cortisol slopes [DCS]; cortisol awakening responses [CAR]). Notably, no studies have ex

Mediating Role of Rumination in Second Victim Experience to Turnover Intention in Psychiatric Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses often face patient safety incidents that can cause physical and emotional harm, even leading to s econd victim syndrome and staff shortages. Rumination-a common response after nurses suffer a patient safety event-may play a specific role between the second victim experience and turnover intention. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for supporting psychiatric nurses and retaining psychiatric nursing resources. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the associations among second victim experience, rumination, and turnover intention in psychiatric nurses and

Avoidance and Rumination as Predictors of Substance Use, Mental Health, and Pain Outcomes Among People Living With HIV.

Pain, substance use, and mental health conditions are common among people living with HIV (PLWH), and avoidance and rumination may influence the co-occurrence of these conditions. The present study examined longitudinal associations between avoidance/rumination and pain outcomes, anxiety, anger, and substance use among PLWH. Participants (N = 187) with chronic pain and depressive symptoms completed self-report assessments over a 1-year period. Greater avoidance/rumination was positively associated with mental health outcomes (anxiety, anger), pain interference, and alcohol use across participa

Anxiety and Depression in Northern Plains American Indian Youth: Evidence for Resilience and Risk.

Developing research collaborations with Indigenous communities to understand the expression and experience of anxiety and depression in American Indian (AI) youth and identifying protective and risk factors may be an important first step toward addressing AI health inequities. We used a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to investigate anxiety and depressive disorder symptoms among AI youth living on a Northern Plains reservation. Moreover, we examined whether symptoms were related to two potential protective and risk factors, anxiety control beliefs and rumination. Our tri

Connectome-wide search for functional connectivity locus associated with pathological rumination as a target for real-time fMRI neurofeedback intervention.

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rtfMRI-nf) enables noninvasive targeted intervention in brain activation with high spatial specificity. To achieve this promise of rtfMRI-nf, we introduced and demonstrated a data-driven framework to design a rtfMRI-nf intervention through the discovery of precise target location associated with clinical symptoms and neurofeedback signal optimization. Specifically, we identified the functional connectivity locus associated with rumination symptoms, utilizing a connectome-wide search in resting-state fMRI data from a large cohort of mood and anxiety disorder indivi

Anxiety sensitivity and rumination: Transdiagnostic factors involved in the relation between subjective social status and anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders among economically disadvantaged Latinos in primary care.

Latinos face striking physical and mental health disparities. One factor associated with such disparities is subjective social status, reflecting subjective ratings of social standing. Yet there is presently a lack of empirical information about the mechanisms underlying relations between subjective social status and anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders among Latinos in community medical services that serve as focal catchment areas for assessment and intervention programming. The present investigation examined the unique explanatory roles of 2 transdiagnostic factors, rumination and a

Salivary cytokine response in the aftermath of stress: An emotion regulation perspective.

Elevated inflammation in the context of stress has been implicated in mental and physical health. Approaching this from an emotion regulation perspective, we tested whether the salivary cytokine response to stress is dampened by using distraction to minimize opportunity for poststressor rumination. Healthy young adults were randomized to an acute stressor: modified Trier Social Stress Test (TSST, Study 1) or angry memory retrieval (Study 2). Within each study, participants were randomized to poststressor condition-rest or distraction-at a 3:1 ratio. Saliva, collected before and 40 min after th

Impaired memory updating associated with impaired recall of negative words in dysphoric rumination-Evidence for a removal deficit.

We present evidence that dysphoric rumination involves a working memory (WM) updating deficit. Sixty-one undergraduates-pre-screened with rumination and depression scales-completed a novel task providing a specific measure of WM updating. This task involved the substitution of emotionally-valenced words, and provided an online measure of the time taken to remove outdated items from WM. Results showed that dysphoric ruminators spent less time removing outdated words from WM when the new to-be-remembered word was negative. This effect was (1) associated with impaired subsequent recall of negativ

Effects of a Hypnotic Induction and an Unpleasantness-Focused Analgesia Suggestion on Pain Catastrophizing to an Experimental Heat Stimulus: A Preliminary Study.

Pain catastrophizing is associated with greater levels of pain. While many studies support the efficacy of hypnosis for pain, the effect on pain catastrophizing remains unclear. The present study evaluated the effect of hypnosis on pain catastrophizing using experimental heat stimulation. Twenty-two pain patients engaged in 3 conditions: baseline (no suggestion), hypnotic induction, and hypnotic induction plus analgesia suggestion. Participants with higher baseline pain showed a significant reduction in rumination following hypnotic induction plus analgesia suggestion and significant reduction
