Association of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection and syphilis with human immunodeficiency virus infection among men who have sex with men in Peru.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated associations between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, and syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Peru. METHODS: A surveillance survey of 3280 MSM was conducted; sexual behavior was assessed with a structured computer-assisted self-interview, and serum antibody testing was performed for HIV, HSV-2, and Treponema pallidum. RESULTS: HIV, HSV-2, and syphilis seroprevalences of 13.9%, 46.3%, and 13.4% were detected, respectively. HSV-2 seroprevalence was twice as high in HIV-infected subjects (80.5%) t

Examining the "reading the mind in the eyes test" as an assessment of subtle differences in affective theory of mind after concussion.

Objective: This research examined affective theory of mind (ToM) differences between university students with and without a history of concussion using the revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). Although, previous studies have shown that affective ToM is subserved by the ventromedial prefrontal cortex - a region that is vulnerable in head injury - few have examined whether subtle deficits in affective ToM are evident after concussion. Given the RMET's sensitivity to affective deficits following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury, the current study examined its validity follow

The relationship between psychological differentiation and performance expectation in alcoholics and normals.

Sixty subjects (20 alcoholic inpatients, 20 outpatient alcoholics, and 20 surgical controls from two Veterans Administration hospitals) were tested on field independence-dependence (measured by the Rod-and-Frame Test), realistic/unrealistic self-expectations (on the Level of Aspiration Board), and degree of alcohol dependence (on the Alcohol Dependence Scale). Response bias and current intelligence were controlled. As predicted, alcoholic inpatients were more alcohol dependent than outpatients, both groups of alcoholics were found to be more field dependent and more unrealistic in their self-e

Strategies to increase HIV testing among men who have sex with men and transgender women: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) are disproportionately affected by HIV, with much higher incidence and prevalence rates than in the general population in different countries. There are several barriers to testing among MSM and TGW, such as low risk perception, anticipation of HIV-related stigma, discrimination of sexual orientation, in addition to difficulties related to care and access to health services. Therefore, analyzing the available evidence of the effectiveness of strategies for scaling up HIV testing among key populations is essential to point

Context-Driven Variability in Personality and Interpersonal Behavior: Evidence-Based Assessment Strategies.

How can assessors capture context-driven variability in personality and interpersonal behavior in ways that are both empirically sound and clinically useful? Scott et al. (2021) offer one potential solution as they discuss the Relational Self-Schema Measure, designed to assess variations in the self-schema across different relationship domains (e.g., self-with-parents, self-with-friends). This Comment outlines an evidence-based framework for assessing variability in personality and interpersonal behavior, describing three strategies that may be used by practitioners in the clinic and beyond. Functional aphonia. A conversion symptom as defensive mechanism against anxiety.

Aphonia is the extreme form of a functional voice disorder. 22 female patients with aphonia underwent laryngoscopic and phonic examinations, psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing and biographical history-taking. Results demonstrate a homogeneous clinical picture, but heterogeneous personality structures and conflict situations. All patients are overtaxed by their situation; the conversion reaction is used as a means to express anxiety and maintain self-assertion at the same time.

The effect of structured psychoeducation for caregivers of ALS patients on perceived stress, psychological resilience and self-compassion.

Patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) become dependent on caregivers to meet their daily needs and perform personal care activities. For this reason, ALS is a disease that can challenge both the patient and the caregiver physically, mentally and socially. Supporting the caregiver indirectly affects the patient's quality of care and mental well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of a structured psychoeducation program on coping with stress, psychological resilience and self-compassion in caregivers of ALS patients. This quasi-experimental study with

Beyond chemobrain: A stepwise approach to identifying cognitive impairment in non-CNS cancer survivors.

Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is common in patients with non-central nervous system malignancies, but its identification remains difficult because symptoms are heterogeneous, may predate treatment, and are not captured by a single measure. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on epidemiology, clinical phenotype, risk factors, neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging, and practical pathways for identifying CRCI in oncology care. Emerging literature highlights subjective-objective discordance and self-awareness as clinically relevant dimensions. Prevalence varies by timing

The job demands-resources seesaw: Dynamic interactions between task demand types and personal resources.

Despite extensive research on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, the interactions between personal resources and job demands remain insufficiently understood, particularly regarding their dual role in shaping perception and appraisal versus resource depletion. This study addresses this critical gap by exploring how mindfulness and psychological capital (PsyCap) operate within the JD-R framework. Specifically, we examined whether mindfulness and PsyCap alter individuals' perception and appraisal of job demands or, conversely, whether job demands deplete individuals' personal resources. The

COVIDmeter - a questionnaire-based symptom monitoring system for the surveillance of COVID-19 in Denmark, 2020-2023.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Denmark launched COVIDmeter, a national participatory surveillance platform collecting real-time, self-reported symptoms from a community cohort, aimed to support early signal detection of COVID-like illness. This study describes the community cohort, the reported symptoms among persons testing positive and evaluates COVIDmeter's performance in detecting trends compared to other established surveillance indicators. A total of 143000 individuals registered as participants, of whom 98% completed at least one weekly questionnaire, resulting in approximately 5.8 mil

Proof of Concept Study: Comparability of Microbiome Diversity in Self- and Physician-Collected HPV-Positive and HPV-Negative Cervicovaginal Samples.

Recent studies have revealed the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections on the cervicovaginal microbiome; however, few have explored the utility of self-collected specimens (SCS) for microbiome detection, obtained using standardised methods for HPV testing. Here, we present a proof-of-concept analysis utilising Oxford Nanopore sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in paired samples collected either by the patient using an Evalyn Brush or collected by a physician using liquid-based cytology (LBC). We found no significant differences in the α-diversity estimates between the SCS and LBC sample

4th Generation HIV screening in the emergency department: net profit or loss for hospitals?

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to determine hospital costs and revenue of universal opt-out HIV ED screening. An electronic medical record (EMR)-directed, automated ED screening program was instituted at an academic medical center in San Diego, California. A base model calculated net income in US dollars for the hospital by comparing annual testing costs with reimbursements using payor mixes and cost variables. To account for differences in payor mixes, testing costs, and reimbursement rates across hospitals in the US, we performed a probabilistic sensitivity analysis. The base model
