Thirty-eight cervical esophageal mucous diaphragms were discovered in the course of 15,000 high endoscopies carried out over the past 5 years at Dakar General Hospital. Thirty-six of the sufferers were Black Senegalese. The 29 women and 9 men had an average age of 37 years. Dysphagia was diagnosed 29 times, and anemia 22 times. Ulcerative colitis is exceptional in Africa South of the Sahara. The first case was described in 1964: up to 1982, 46 cases were reported. A group of 110 individuals with Schistosoma mansoni infection was investigated. Patients were allocated to one of three treatment groups and given artesunate or praziquantel alone or both in combination. Combined artesunate-praziquantel significantly increased the number of individuals cured at 5 weeks post-treatment, but at 12 weeks was only better than artesunate alone and at 24 weeks there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups. Egg count reduction rate was similar to the rate obtained with praziquantel used alone.
