Clinical use of photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy for the treatment of deep carious lesions.

The purpose of this study was to assess photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) via irradiation, using a low power laser associated with a photosensitization dye, as an alternative to remove cariogenic microorganisms by drilling. Remaining dentinal samples in deep carious lesions on permanent molars (n = 26) were treated with 0.01% methylene blue dye and irradiated with a low power laser (InGaAIP - indium gallium aluminum phosphide; λ = 660 nm; 100 mW; 320 Jcm(-2); 90 s; 9J). Samples of dentin from the pulpal wall region were collected with a micropunch before and immediately after PACT

A clinical and microbiological comparative study of deep carious lesion treatment in deciduous and young permanent molars.

The aim of this study was to compare one-visit indirect pulp treatment (IPT), two-visit IPT, and direct complete excavation (DCE) of deciduous and young permanent molars with deep carious lesions from clinical and microbiological points of view. One hundred thirty-five teeth (83 deciduous molars and 52 young permanent molars) were included in the study. The teeth were randomly selected and treated either with one-visit IPT, two-visit IPT, or DCE. For two-visit IPT, the final excavation was performed after a period of 3 months. The color, consistency, and humidity of the dentin at the cavity fl

Effect of erupting third molars on dental caries and gingival health in Finnish students.

The purpose of this study was to assess how the eruptive status of third molars relates to gingival and dental health and, in particular, to the status of the adjacent second molar. One hundred and twenty-three young adults were followed up over a 6-year period, from age 20 to age 26. The status of the second and third molars, and DMF, DMFS, DS, MS, and FS indices, periodontal condition, and salivary acidogenic bacterial counts were assessed. The 6-year DFS increase in relation to second molars was greatest in sextants with unerupted third molars. The percentage of erupting third molars that b

Does breastfeeding increase risk of early childhood caries?

According to the WHO, "breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and develo … t forget that the main factor influencing caries development in infants is the presence of bacteria streptococcus mutans that thrives in a combination of sugars, small amounts of saliva and a low pH. Today the question is open and recently Chaffee, Felines, Vitolo et al. [2014] have found that breastfeeding for 24 months or longer increases the prevalence of severe ea …

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide, imposing substantial health and economic bu … as sparse, heterogeneous, and largely limited to microbiological endpoints, including reductions in Streptococcus mutans and favorable plaque pH shifts. Reported adverse events were mild and infrequent. DISCUSSION: Probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus rhamnosus and L. reuteri delivered via lozenges or dairy products, show moderate-certainty evidence for modest carie …

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the impact of various beverages on the color change, surface roughness, and bacterial adhesion of nan … ellicle formation, and the samples were incubated. To evaluate bacterial adhesion, colony counts of Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) were reported as CFU/ml. Additionally, one sample from each subgroup was cultured for scanning electron microscopy. Selective Caries Removal as a Restorative Strategy for Caries Management: Residual Dentin Quality After Chemomechanical and Mechanical Excavation.

Background/Objectives: Advances in restorative caries management have shifted operative dentistry from complete caries excavation toward sel … ol using a demineralizing solution for 240 h. A cariogenic biofilm model was then established using Streptococcus mutans. Specimens were allocated to four excavation groups: Carisolv™, Papacarie®, Smart Burs™, and conventional carbide burs. Caries removal was performed according to each system, and the operative time was recorded. Residual bacterial contamination was …

Recruitment of healthy third-trimester pregnant women and their newborns into a prospective dental study at a primary health care clinic.

BACKGROUND: Recruiting and retaining mother-infant dyads in clinical research is often complex, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse communities. This paper reports on the recruitment and retention strategies employed within a prospective longitudinal cohort study (First Tooth Study) that investigated the oral colonization of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans as risk factors for Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) and the vertical transmission of these oral microorganisms. The study population was underserved mother-infant dyads, a group historically…

Differences in tongue microbiota of older adults with a high fungal load according to tongue coating status.

The tongue microbiota of older adults requires careful attention because it can be aspirated into the lower respiratory tract due to impaire … ed significantly lower bacterial loads and higher relative abundances of acidogenic taxa, including Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus gasseri, compared with those with substantial tongue coating. These bacterial communities were also distinct from those of individuals with no/slight tongue coating and a low fungal load. These findings indicate that the reduction …

Supragingival dental biofilm profile and biofilm control during orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliance: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of supragingival dental biofilm control during orthodontic treatment and changes in the bacterial profile were analyzed. DESIGN: Sixty-four participants aged 12-22 years (57% female) were included in the study. Participants underwent orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances and were randomly assigned to one of the three groups, which during a period of one month: (I) used chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), (II) used high concentration of fluoride (F) gel and (III) performed standard oral hygiene. The plaque and gingivitis index, pH of biofilm and white spot lesio

Tantalum Nitride-Decorated Titanium with Enhanced Resistance to Microbiologically Induced Corrosion and Mechanical Property for Dental Application.

Microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) of metallic devices/implants in the oral region is one major cause of implant failure and metal allergy in patients. Therefore, it is crucial to develop practical approaches which can effectively prevent MIC for broad clinical applications of these materials. In the present work, tantalum nitride (TaN)-decorated titanium with promoted bio-corrosion and mechanical property was firstly developed via depositing TaN layer onto pure Ti using magnetron sputtering. The microstructure and chemical constituent of TaN coatings were characterized, and were found

A randomized controlled trial of a 10 percent CPP-ACP cream to reduce mutans streptococci colonization.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a 10 percent casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) cream to reduce mutans streptococci (MS) colonization and prevent early childhood caries. METHODS: The cohort was randomized at mean age of 11 days old to receive once-daily CPP-ACP cream (n=102) or no product (comparison group; n=89) from the time of first tooth eruption. All mothers were contacted by telephone at six, 12, and 18 months and advised to brush their children's teeth twice daily with low-dose fluoride toothpaste. At 24 months, all ch

Hypoplasia-associated severe early childhood caries--a proposed definition.

We propose a new classification of severe early childhood caries (S-ECC): hypoplasia-associated severe early childhood caries (HAS-ECC). This form of caries affects mostly young children living at or below poverty, characterized by structurally damaged primary teeth that are particularly vulnerable to dental caries. These predisposing developmental dental defects are mainly permutations of enamel hypoplasia (EHP). Anthropologists and dental researchers consider EHP an indicator for infant and maternal stresses including malnutrition, a variety of illnesses, and adverse birthing conditions. Dif
