"You can only keep it so Warm": temperatures inside tents and coping strategies among people experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

People experiencing unsheltered homelessness (PEUH) are disproportionately vulnerable to extreme temperatures. This study measured overnight exposure to hot and cold temperatures inside tents occupied by PEUH in Knoxville, Tennessee, and examined participants’ coping strategies through semi-structured interviews (n = 20). In winter, many participants successfully warmed their tents by 10 °C or more, by burning materials and using layers of blankets and tarps. Winter warmth required an abundance of resources, making moving to shelters infeasible, as it meant abandoning these hard-won supplies.

Computational insight to optimize nanofluidic thermal transport management in octagonal enclosure with heat generating element by envisioning novel physical factors.

This study investigates the production of entropy and thermal transition phenomena in MHD nanoliquid movement via a porous octagonal enclosure with a central obstacle and establishes an ANN model for predicting the average Nusselt number (Nuavg) based on FEM simulations. The equations governing the flow and thermal transference in steady, incompressible, two-dimensional nanofluid flow were derived using the Darcy-Forchheimer model to include the effect of the porous medium and solved numerically employing the Galerkin finite element method (GFEM). Analysis of grid independence was performed to

Assessment of the relationship between body surface temperature and behavioral responses in rams using infrared thermography.

BACKGROUND: Animals under heat stress change their behavior to regulate their body temperature, as higher temperatures lead to a decrease in feed intake, thereby affecting production. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the temperature of different body parts measured by a thermal camera as a non-invasive indicator and the behavioral responses shown by the animal under different environmental conditions to predict these responses and understand the physiological and emotional state of rams. METHODS: The temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to define the environmen

Valproic acid effects on stress-induced depression-like behavior in rodent models: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Depression is one of the most common health concerns all around the globe. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant agent, with neuroprotective, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant effects in animal models. We carried out a systematic review of articles that reported the effect of VPA on stress-related depression in animal models. A search of databases was conducted with keywords related to valproic acid (VPA) and stress-induced depression. Data from the Forced Swimming Test (FST), Open Field Test (OFT), Novel Object Recognition (NOR), and Sucrose Preference Test (SPT) were e

Swimming impairment caused by pharmaceuticals in native and invasive fishes: A comparison of fluoxetine effects in two poeciliid species.

Chemical pollution and invasive alien species are currently recognized as two of the major drivers of global biodiversity loss. These two pressures rarely act in isolation, but instead frequently co-occur and interact in human-modified ecosystems. The antidepressant fluoxetine (FLX) is among the neuroactive pharmaceuticals most regularly detected in watersheds worldwide, raising concerns over its potential adverse effects on the behavior of fishes and other aquatic organisms. For native fish species inhabiting FLX-polluted environments, the ability to withstand the ecological pressure from inv

Targeting Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis with Levothyroxine in Experimental Parkinson's Disease in Rats.

Parkinson’s disease is a long-term, progressive condition that affects both movement and other parts of life that aren’t motor-related. Cognitive decline is one of the most impactful non-motor symptoms, as it can seriously affect overall quality of life. Although existing dopamine replacement therapies, including levodopa, mainly focus on alleviating motor symptoms, they do not adequately address issues such as dyskinesia, non-motor deficits, and the need for neuroprotective treatments. This research aimed to explore the neuroprotective properties of levothyroxine (L-T4) in a PD animal model.

Functional impact of the ATP1A3-p.A813V variant: insights into a calcium-driven hyperexcitability cascade in rapid-onset dystonia-Parkinsonism.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the neuronal Na+/K+-ATPase subunit ATP1A3 are linked to a spectrum of neurological disorders, including rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP), yet their pathogenic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. We describe the complex clinical characteristics of a patient with early-onset movement disorders and a likely pathogenic de novo variant in ATP1A3(c·2438C>T, p.A813V). METHODS: We identified a de novo heterozygous ATP1A3 p.A813V variant in a patient with clinically confirmed RDP and employed an integrative approach combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations,

Bite by bite: Exposing hidden tick-borne disease risks among Nigeria's ruminant livestock workers.

Tick-borne diseases pose a significant global threat, with individuals in livestock-related occupations at high risk. This study assessed the risk factors for tick-borne viral diseases among pastoralist herdsmen and abattoir workers in Kwara State of Nigeria, a critical region for livestock movement. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 374 livestock workers (125 herdsmen; 249 abattoir workers), using structured questionnaires and observational assessments. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression. We identified a high prevalence of risky pra

Transgenic Expression of BK Channel Auxiliary LRRC26 Subunit in the Forebrain Causes Locomotor Hyperactivity and Cognitive Defects.

The large-conductance, Ca²+- and voltage-activated K+ (BK) channels are widely distributed in the central nervous system, where they play diverse roles in regulating brain activity. The γ1 (LRRC26) subunit functions as a potent activator of BK channels, inducing a large shift in the voltage dependence of channel activation toward the hyperpolarized direction. Given the large conductance of BK channels, their activators have therapeutic potential for various diseases. To investigate the impact of activator-induced hyperactivity of BK channels on brain function, we generated conditional hLRRC26

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping of the Cervical Spinal Cord at 3T and Application to Multiple Sclerosis.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is an advanced MRI technique that links phase variations to the local tissue susceptibility. In multiple sclerosis (MS), QSM has shown promise in characterizing brain lesions by assessing chronic inflammation and myelin content. However, in the spinal cord (SC), the question remains as to whether QSM can classify MS lesions as demyenilated/remyenilated and detect chronic inflammation. SC QSM poses novel challenges due to the small size, mobility and curvature of the cord, as well as magnetic field inhomogeneities caused by nearby vertebrae and physiolo

Using an indocyanine green fluorescent imaging technique for laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery: a case report.

Colorectal cancer is a clinically common malignancy with high incidence and mortality rates. Surgery remains the preferred treatment option for colorectal cancer. Laparoscopic surgery is more widely used than open surgery due to its advantages of reduced surgical trauma and faster postoperative recovery. However, complications such as anastomotic leakage, bleeding, intestinal obstruction, and intra-abdominal infections can still occur, prolonging hospital stays and impairing patient recovery. In particular, anastomotic leakage is a severe complication that significantly affects the postoperati

Therapeutic and protective approaches to combat Campylobacter jejuni infections.

Campylobacter jejuni is a typical zoonotic bacterium, colonizing the gut of many bird species as commensal. In humans, C. jejuni is a major foodborne pathogen. Infection of humans causes campylobacteriosis in the small intestine, constituting a main source of bacteria-dependent gastroenteritis cases worldwide. In particular, the ingestion of under-cooked rooster meat, raw milk and contaminated water, as well as cross-contamination of ready-to-eat food after handling raw chicken meat, are responsible for the majority of C. jejuni infections. As a consequence, infected individuals may acquire wa

Bovine serum albumin and caffeine enhance activation of sperm from the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus).

The collection and cryopreservation of anuran spermic urine results in multiple osmolality shifts that inactivate and reactivate sperm motility prior to in-vitro fertilization. These shifts in osmolality reduce motility recovery and fertilization potential. Here, we analyzed the effects of metabolic supplements for reactivation of sperm motility and forward progression from the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus). Male toads (n = 30) were administrated hormones to stimulate spermiation and samples were mixed 1:1 with 2× simplified amphibian ringers solution for sperm inactivation. Inactivated

Exploring Secondary Biotinidase Deficiency and Biotin Supplementation in PMM2-CDG.

The congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) encompass >190 multiorgan disorders with predominantly neurodevelopmental phenotypes with no causative treatment available. The glycoprotein biotinidase (BTD) provides biotin, an essential cofactor for carboxylases in ubiquitous metabolic pathways. Individuals with (partial) BTD deficiency (BTDD) and CDG patients show overlapping phenotypes like movement disorders, seizures, and neurodevelopmental issues. Biotin is a water-soluble, inexpensive, and safe food supplement. Patients with primary BTDD respond well to oral biotin supplement. We here ex

Avian Influenza Screening in Captive Wild Birds and Biosecurity Appraisal of Zoological Gardens in Southwestern Nigeria.

Avian influenza (AI) is a severe respiratory disease affecting wild and domestic birds globally. There is currently no approved vaccine for AI control in Nigeria. Therefore, biosecurity measures remain the primary preventive strategy. However, there is limited information on the AI carrier status of captive wild birds and the implementation of biosecurity programs (BPs) in zoological gardens across the country. This study aimed to screen captive wild birds for AI and evaluate the BPs in selected zoological gardens in southwestern Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional approach, cloacal swabs and fre

Hemodynamics and Drinking in the Giraffe.

BACKGROUND: The circulation of 4-6 m tall giraffes is markedly affected by gravity. To ensure cerebral perfusion, upright giraffes generate a blood pressure in excess of 200 mmHg. Before drinking, the head is lowered by 3-5 m, providing exceptional hemodynamic challenges. Here, we provide quantitative hemodynamic measures during head movement and drinking. METHODS: We measured carotid pressure, jugular pressure, heart rate, and blood flow in awake giraffes, along with circulating blood volume and cerebrospinal fluid pressure in anesthetized giraffes. We also analyzed the contractility and inn

Bioinspired Catechol-PEG Functionalized PVDF Nanofiber Membranes with Hydrophilicity-Adhesion Synergy for Reliable Skin-Conformal Sweat Sensing.

Wearable sweat sensors are emerging as transformative noninvasive platforms for real-time physiological monitoring. However, persistent challenges regarding dynamic skin conformability, reliable adhesion, efficient sweat uptake/transport, and biosafety impede clinical translation. Herein, we developed hydrophilic-adhesive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membranes via a bioinspired modification strategy for sweat sensor construction. Catechol-functionalized polyethylene glycol copolymer (catechol-PEG) was synthesized through epoxy-amine ring-opening polymerization between poly(ethylene

Perfusion pressure as a determinant of respiratory function outcomes in unilateral biportal lumbar endoscopic procedures.

INTRODUCTION: UBE is used to treat most lumbar spine diseases, and it must rely on continuous infusion of saline to maintain a clear field of vision during the operation to ensure the smooth progress of the operation. Among many complications, the incidence of dural tear is the highest. Whether UBE can damage the dura and the effect of intraoperative perfusion pressure changes on respiratory function under different conditions are not clear. METHODS: In the present experiment, Wistar rats were implanted with diaphragmatic electrodes and divided into two groups (dura mater with rupture group a
