For the past 15 years there has been an increasing interest in the prolapsed mitral (PMV) syndrome as evidenced by its increasing attention in the literature. Goldfish were flown in parabolic Keplerian trajectories in a KC-135 aircraft to assay both the effectiveness of piracetam as an anti-motion sickness drug and the effectiveness of state-dependent training during periods of oscillating gravity levels. Single-frame analyses of infrared films were performed for two classes of responses--roll rates in hypogravity or hypogravity orienting responses (LGR) and climbing responses in hypergravity or hypergravity orienting responses (HGR). Forty experimentally heatstroke dogs were cooled by immersion in water at temperatures varying from 1-25 degrees C. At all water temperatures, cooling occurred at a much slower rate in comatose dogs in conscious ones. Dogs cooled in tap water (15-16 degrees C) had the same cooling rate as those cooled in ice water (1-3 degrees C). At water temperatures above 18 degrees C, cooling rates were considerably decreased. This study was designed to see if retinal haemorrhage occurred after 24 h of decompression to a pressure of 446 torr. Four subjects were studied after 24 h of decompression and had retinal photography and fluorescein angiography performed at rest and following maximum exercise. Abnormalities in the ENT area that are directly related to aerospace operations are largely secondary to man's persistence in operating outside his intended environment. These are spatial disorientation, motion sickness, barotrauma, noise-induced hearing loss, and certain clinical entities which have the capability of producing sudden incapacitation. Two experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of vision on susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to constant patterns of vestibular stimulation. Research since 1960 was reviewed to compare the relative efficacy of behavior therapy and other therapy modalities in the treatment of flight phobias in trained military aircrew, commercial flight crews, and civilian air travellers. Atrial fibrillation occurred twice during episodes of severe nausea and vomiting in a previously healthy 40-year-old male with new onset of Meniere's syndrome (tinnitus, vertigo, deafness). No organic cause was identified to explain the arrhythmia. Holter monitoring, maximal treadmill stress testing, and sinus node recovery times were normal. Intense vagal stimulation, subsequent bradycardia, and dispersion of atrial tissue refractory period is the likely explanation for this arrhythmia.

Heterophoria, its influence on stereopsis, and the importance of cycloplegia in refraction testing of pilot applicants were studied. Distant heterophoria was found in 94.5-100% while near heterophoria was found in 86.9-98.1% of the cases, depending on the test used. Hyperphoria of over 1 prism diopter was extremely rare. No statistically significant correlation between distant heterophoria and the degree of stereopsis could be demonstrated at a range of up to at least 6 prism diopters.
