STUDY DESIGN: Case report and clinical discussion.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a unique etiology for a patient presenting with exercise-induced lower extremity numbness found to have agenesis of the infrarenal inferior vena cava (IVC) and a large vein draining the confluence of the iliac veins through the L4 foramen into the epidural plexus.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Epidural venous abnormalities are infrequently determined to be the etiology of nerve root compression syndromes. Such cases have been described in patients with absent IVC with thrombosis. We are unaware of any previously describe

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report the third case of an aneurysm of the lateral sacral artery (AnLSA). In all cases, because of an incorrect preoperative diagnosis, the surgeons were confronted with severe and unexpected hemorrhaging, and surgery was aborted without effective treatment. Our purpose is to present the preoperative features of AnLSA and its treatment modalities.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man had a medical history of renal transplantation on his left external iliac artery. He complained of acute lumbar pain associated with cauda equina syndrome, which resolved within …

Among the multitude of potential etiologies for low back pain in the elderly, cauda equina syndrome is the only genuine surgical emergency. The consequence of delayed recognition, referral, and decompression may be permanent neurologic deficit. Fortunately, this event is rare. Certain other warning signs and symptoms (as outlined in Fig. 1) should alert the clinician to possible systemic disease and warrant earlier, more aggressive evaluation. Careful history-taking and focused physical examination remain the cornerstones of clinical decision making in managing the geriatric patient with back …

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage (SSEH) warrants urgent surgical treatment in most cases. Which patients will benefit most from decompression is not known and the disease's rarity hampers the collection of large data series to ascertain this. Therefore, using an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis, we aimed to identify predictors for outcome and to obtain knowledge on the etiology of SSEH.
METHODS: The IPD meta-analysis is based on raw data from case reports across all studies concerning all variables of interest. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews a

Distinguishing between an infective and malignant process provides a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. This case highlights an example of an acute spinal cord compression that could fall into either of these two categories. The diagnosis in this case of disseminated Nocardiosis is an extremely rare cause of acute spinal cord compression and to our knowledge intrinsic conus medullaris infection from Nocardia has not previously been reported in the literature. Nocardia cyriacigeorgica is an emerging strain of Nocardia species recently identified which was previously categorised as Nocardia as

Caudal regression syndrome consists of multiple congenital anomalies, mainly caudal segment defects. We describe a preterm baby born to a healthy mother with typical caudal regression picture, including imperforated anus with rectovesical fistula, sacral agenesis, multiple rib and vertebral anomalies, and club feet. Crossed fused renal ectopia with fused ureters resulting in urinary obstruction was managed with transureteroureterostomy and cutaneous vesicostomy. We also found a single large umbilical artery with high abdominal aortic insertion which usually presents in sirenomelia. Because of

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the spectrum of spinal canal disease in patients with known malignancy using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty-five patients underwent a total of 159 spinal MRI examinations over a three-year period. Patients were examined using a 1.0T magnet and a phased array surface spine coil. Sagittal T1 weighted spin echo and STIR sequences were routinely employed. Axial T1 and T2 weighted spin echo images were obtained at sites of identified pathology. Contrast enhanced sagittal and axial T1 weighted spin echo images

Massive spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage causing compression of the cauda equina is reported. The origin of haemorrhage is concluded to have been an intradural angioblastic meningioma of the filum terminale at the L 3/4. Our paper describes the course of this patient in respect of diagnostic problems and reviews 6 cases of spontaneous spinal subarachnoid haematoma due to SAH from a spinal tumour with acute compression of the adjoining nervous structures. The necessity of early diagnosis and proper operative treatment is stressed.

The authors report three cases of vertebral osteonecrosis which presented the phenomenon of intra-vertebral space. These patients had osteoporosis with vertebral compression. Two received steroid therapy. One case progressively developed spinal cord compression and the two other cases had an associated osteonecrosis (femoral head and talus). After reviewing the literature, the authors stress the relative frequency of neurological complications, in particular spinal cord compression (7 per cent).

Previous studies have shown that interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is a proinflammatory cytokine that contributes to the pathogenesis of Guillain-Barré syndrome and its animal model, experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN). Treatments with anti-IFN-γ antibodies improve clinical outcome in GBS patients and EAN animals and administration of IFN-γ markedly worsens EAN. Paradoxically, the mice deficient in IFN-γ remain susceptible to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an analogous disease in the central nervous system. These observations raise a question whether IFN-γ might be protective in autoimmu

OBJECTIVE: Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome (OTCS) is defined as a clinical syndrome of cord tension with symptomatology similar to Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS) but lacking typical imaging features, with the conus medullaris (CM) terminating at a normal level above the second lumbar vertebral body. A posteriorly displaced filum terminale (FT) on prone MRI, termed the "sunrise sign," has been proposed as a diagnostic marker for OTCS. This study aimed to characterize the position of the CM and FT and to determine the prevalence of the sunrise sign in asymptomatic adults.

BACKGROUND: The study analyzed the clinical features and risk factors for poor prognosis in children with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) spectrum disorders positive for anti-sulfatide antibodies.
METHODS: Clinical and follow-up data of 43 children diagnosed with GBS spectrum disorders positive for serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid anti-sulfatide antibodies and treated at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between July 2018 and April 2023 were analyzed. A 1:1 matching was performed for a comparative analysis of clinical features.
RESULTS: Respiratory tract prodromal infecti
