Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic arbovirus with important livestock and human health, and economic consequences across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Climate and vegetation monitoring guide RVFV forecasting models and early warning systems; however, these approaches make monthly predictions and a need exists to predict primary vector abundances at finer temporal scales. In Kenya, an important primary RVFV vector is the mosquito Aedes mcintoshi. We used a zero-inflated negative binomial regression and multimodel averaging approach with georeferenced Ae. mcintoshi m

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus can cause severe symptoms in humans. The incidence of this vector-borne pathogen in humans is characterised by spatial and temporal heterogeneity. To explain the variation in reported human TBE cases per county in southern Germany, we designed a time-lagged, spatially-explicit model that incorporates ecological, environmental, and climatic factors.
RESULTS: We fitted a logistic regression model to the annual counts of reported human TBE cases in each of 140 counties over an eight year period. The model controlled for spatial autocorrelation and

BACKGROUND: Under global warming, insect responses vary across regions, yet the population trends of dominant lady beetle species in central China remain poorly understood. Whether abiotic forcing (climate) or biotic interactions (prey availability) dominates their long-term population dynamics is unresolved.
METHODS: We monitored lady beetle populations using black-light traps during March-November, 2015-2024, at a fixed farmland site in Luohe, Henan, China. Trap data were integrated with local meteorological records and aphid catches from a suction trap.
RESULTS: A total of 21,572 individu

Urban ecosystems are subjected to high temperatures--extreme heat events, chronically hot weather, or both-through interactions between local and global climate processes. Urban vegetation may provide a cooling ecosystem service, although many knowledge gaps exist in the biophysical and social dynamics of using this service to reduce climate extremes. To better understand patterns of urban vegetated cooling, the potential water requirements to supply these services, and differential access to these services between residential neighborhoods, we evaluated three decades (1970-2000) of land surfa

Research on urban community effects on health has considered a range of collective social processes as potential links between economic disadvantage and health. We extend this focus to deaths of despair (DoD; drug overdose mortality and suicide) in rural counties by examining the association between a novel indicator of economic cynicism (perceptions that local communities have been 'left behind' economically) and DoD. We also consider a range of other aspects of social climate potentially relevant to health, including social network ties, collective efficacy and social and physical disorder.

Wildfires are growing in destructive power, and accurately predicting the spread and intensity of wildland fire is essential for managing ecological and societal impacts. No current operational models used for fire behavior prediction resolve critical fire-atmospheric coupling or nonlocal influences of the fire environment, rendering them inadequate in accounting for the range of wildland fire behavior scenarios under increasingly novel fuel and climate conditions. Here, we present a new perspective on a dominant fire-atmospheric feedback mechanism, which we term wildland fire entrainment (WFE

Dengue, a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne viral disease, is endemic in many tropical and subtropical areas, with Southeast Asia bearing the highest burden. In China, dengue epidemics are primarily influenced by imported cases from Southeast Asia. By integrating monthly maximum temperature and precipitation from Southeast Asia and local provinces in China, we aim to build models to predict dengue incidence in high-risk areas of China. From 2005-2023, a total of 117,839 dengue cases were reported, with Guangdong and Yunnan provinces accounting for 57.8 % and 26.2 % of cases, respectively. Large

Climate change is causing shifts in the phenology of taxa across the globe, with phenological shifts detected in species, including but not limited to, plants, insects, and birds. However, changes in the phenology of caterpillar activity have been relatively understudied, despite the importance of caterpillar activity for conservation, plant and wildlife ecology, forest management practices, and agriculture. To improve understanding of the potential impacts of climate change on caterpillar phenology, we modeled shifts in the onset date of observable activity, termination date of observable act

This study aimed to adapt the Solastalgia subscale of the Environmental Distress Scale (EDS) into Turkish and evaluate its validity and reliability among Turkish-speaking adults. A cross-sectional psychometric validation design was employed. The adaptation process followed standard translation procedures, expert review, and pilot testing. Data were collected from 439 adults. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted in two randomly split independent subsamples to cross-validate the factor structure. The Turkish Solastalgia Scale demonstrated a robust unidimensional structure

Global climate change and shrinking freshwater supplies threaten agricultural sustainability. A major translational bottleneck exists: drought-tolerant genotypes developed in labs often fail in open-field conditions due to phenotypic mismatch. Traditional single-gene approaches and static lab tests overlook genotype-by-environment (G × E) interactions, hormonal tradeoffs (involving Abscisic Acid, Jasmonic Acid, Brassinosteroids, and Melatonin), and artificial effects of pots. This review presents an integrated quantitative selection framework to bridge lab and field results. In this review, we

Ross River virus (RRV) transmission cycle varies across Queensland, Australia. Identifying key exposures associated with regional RRV incidence can aid disease prevention and control. Using RRV notification data from 2001 to 2020, we developed negative binomial generalized linear models to predict RRV incidence across three Queensland regions categorized by thermal climate zones (Hot, Warm, and Dry). Predictors and RRV trends differed across regions, indicating unique transmission patterns: seasonally driven in the Hot region, outbreak driven in the Warm region, and a mixed transmission patter

There is growing awareness and recognition of the importance of the One Health paradigm to address existing environmental threats and recognise emerging ones at an early stage among Arctic residents, public health agencies, and wildlife resource managers. The One Health approach, emphasising the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health, plays a pivotal role in addressing these multifaceted issues. Warming climate and permafrost thaw may influence both contaminant exposure and the spread of zoonotic infectious diseases and have impacts on water and food security. Migration from

Dengue is a vector-borne disease that has increased over the past two decades, becoming a global public health emergency. The transmission of dengue is contingent upon various factors, among which climate variability plays a significant role. However, there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the underlying mechanisms. This study aims to investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of dengue risk and to quantify the associated risk factors in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, from 2001 to 2019. To achieve this, a spatio-temporal Bayesian hierarchical model was developed, integrating delayed an

Remote sensing (RS) permits evaluation of spatial and temporal variables that can be used for vector-borne disease models. A Landsat Thematic Mapper scene covering Canindé, Ceará in northeastern Brazil (September 25, 1986) was spectrally enhanced and classified using ERDAS (Atlanta, GA) Imagine for 873 4-km2 areas. The population and number of cases of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) were determined for each 4-km2 area. Relative risk (RR) ratios were calculated for climate, demographic, and case data recorded for 17 years by the Municipality of Conidé. The RR of AVL for a child less than

BACKGROUND: In the current context of global climate change, understanding the impact of climate on respiratory infectious diseases such as mumps and the potential modified factors is crucial, especially in developing countries. However, research on the climate-related incidence of mumps is rare, inconsistent and mainly limited to a single city or region.
METHODS: Daily mumps cases and meteorological variables of 10 cities in Guangxi, Southern China were collected for 2005-2017. Two-stage analyses were performed to assess the relationship between meteorological factors and mumps incidence dur

INTRODUCTION: Seasonal snow significantly regulates vegetation productivity on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), but its pathways and seasonal effects remain unclear.
METHODS: Using multi-source remote sensing datasets and long-term field observations, this study employed a structural equation model to disentangle the dual-pathway regulatory mechanisms-specifically the soil moisture and growing-season effects-through which snow influences net primary productivity (NPP) across spring and summer on the TP.
RESULTS: Snow regulation of vegetation NPP exhibited significant seasonal and spatial differenti

The pyrophilous beetle Melanophila acuminata is a decomposer of freshly burned wood, playing a critical role in nutrient cycling within forest ecosystems. To investigate the impact of climate change on the global distribution of M. acuminata, this study employed MaxEnt modeling in conjunction with 22 environmental variables under current and future conditions (2050s and 2070s) to conduct a comparative analysis of its suitable habitats. After rational screening, a total of 795 global occurrence records and 10 selected key environmental variables were incorporated into the MaxEnt model, which de

Opuntia cacti rank among the most widespread and ecologically damaging plant invaders globally, yet it remains unclear whether their invasion success is driven by niche conservatism or niche shifts. Here, we investigated niche dynamics between native and invaded ranges for four Opuntia species (O. dillenii, O. ficus-indica, O. monacantha, and O. humifusa) that differ in climatic origin and invasion history. Using biomod2 ensemble models combined with principal component analysis in environmental space (PCA-env) and multivariate environmental similarity surface (MESS) analysis, we found that al

Escalating global temperatures threaten economic stability by worsening occupational heat stress and reducing workforce productivity. Despite advancements in macroeconomic modeling, current risk assessments rely on coarse annual aggregations and ignore internal labor mobility, thereby masking highly unequal sub-national vulnerabilities and underestimating how labor mobility buffers cascading supply-chain losses. Here we present a high-resolution, agent-based dynamic supply chain network model that integrates empirical daily mobility data across 313 Chinese cities to quantify the spatiotemporal

The spread of the highly invasive mosquito, Aedes albopictus, across Europe, combined with climate change and human travel and trade, has led to new epidemic threats from mosquito-borne viruses, most significantly dengue and chikungunya, which are increasing in frequency and magnitude. In 2025, mainland France has seen a record number of autochthonous cases and outbreaks of chikungunya, spread across multiple locations, primarily introduced by travellers from the French Overseas Territory of La Réunion which is experiencing severe chikungunya outbreaks. Here, we describe one of the largest Fre
