This study was undertaken to examine the effects of subsequent administration of antipsychotic drugs (clozapine and haloperidol) on cognitive deficits in mice after repeated administration of phencyclidine (PCP). In the novel object recognition test, repeated administration of PCP (10 mg/kg) significantly decreased exploratory preference in the retention test session but not in the training test session. PCP-induced deficits were significantly improved by subsequent subchronic (2 weeks) administration of clozapine (5 mg/kg), but not haloperidol (0.1 mg/kg). These findings suggest that PCP-indu

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An increasing number of older adults are seeking behavioral voice therapy to manage their voice problems. Poor adherence to voice therapy is a known problem across all treatment-seeking populations. Given age-related physical and cognitive impairments and multiple chronic conditions, older adults are more susceptible to low adherence to behavioral therapies. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of an at-home, vocal training intervention for older adults without a known voice disorder living in a senior living community, as well as compare the effects of

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is multi-factorial mental disorder characterized by a copious array of congruent features cumulating in disrupted memory and dysthymia. Though the mechanism remains elusive, the highly unspecific pharmaceutical, memantine, provides modest benefits for patients with moderate-to-severe AD. A greater understanding of how memantine affects cognitive function promises to facilitate the search for better therapeutics. We therefore examined cognitive flexibility of mice following 5 and 10 mg/kg memantine administration using a platform re-location water maze. Strikingly, subj

This study examined the effects of caffeinated coffee (3 mg/kg) compared to decaffeinated coffee (placebo) on physical and cognitive performance in trained male athletes with morning (MT) and evening (ET) chronotypes, all of whom had moderate caffeine intake. Seventeen trained male athletes participated in various tests, including CP (a flanker task), hand grip strength test, back strength test, lower body Wingate sprint tests (peak and average power), and rating of perceived exertion (using the Borg Scale). The tests were conducted at two times of day: mornings (08:00 h-10:00 h) and evenings

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESES: Postcancer cognitive impairment (PCCI) is observed in a substantial number of breast cancer survivors, persisting for as long as 20 years in some subgroups. Although compensatory strategies are frequently suggested, no restorative interventions have yet been identified. This study examined the feasibility of EEG biofeedback ("neurofeedback") and its potential effectiveness in reducing PCCI as well as the fatigue, sleep disturbance, and psychological symptoms that frequently accompany PCCI.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a 6-month prospective study with a waitlis

BACKGROUND: People living with dementia (PLwD) have a high fall risk as cognitive impairment compromises control of gait and balance. Fall prevention exercises that are effective in healthy older adults may not work for PLwD. Cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) has been shown to improve global cognition in PLwD. A programme which combines cognitive (CST) with physical exercises may reduce falls in PLwD. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of undertaking a full scale randomised controlled trial to test the effectiveness of CogEx in decreasing falls in PLwD. Specific objectives i

It has been well established that physical exercise is associated with augmented cognitive function, but the exact mechanisms by which peripheral activity affects the plasticity of the brain remain mechanistically elusive. This narrative review synthesises evidence from mouse models and human studies to clarify how physical exercise may enhance hippocampus-dependent cognition through systemic, neurovascular, immune, and metabolic mechanisms instead of direct "brain training" alone. This distinction is supported by the limited far transfer shown in many cognitive training models, wherein improv…

BACKGROUND: Although multimodal exercise interventions are recognized for their potential to attenuate age-related cognitive decline, the current literature lacks longitudinal depth. Specifically, robust randomized evidence addressing the long-term efficacy of structured training protocols remains limited. This single-blind RCT involved 882 community-dwelling older adults categorized as healthy, having subjective memory complaints (SMCs), or having mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODS: Participants were randomized to an experimental group (EG), performing 48 months of supervised moderate-

Background: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative disorder that worsens over time without appropriate treatment. Although referral to a speech and language pathologist is essential for diagnosing language deficits and developing effective treatment plans, there is no scientific consensus regarding the most effective treatment. Thus, our study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of various therapeutic interventions for PPA. Methods: Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched to identify articles assessing differe

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that significantly impairs cognitive functions, particularly memory and thinking skills. The presence of AD in millions of individuals worldwide constitutes a substantial global health challenge. Timely and accurate diagnosis of AD is critical for effective management and improved patient outcomes. This study introduces ViTAD, an innovative method for classifying five stages of AD from brain MRI images, leveraging a Vision Transformer (ViT) model. The proposed model modifies Google's ViT architecture, incorporating fine-tuned hype

Treatment outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) are variable and more individualized approaches may be needed. Cross-validated, machine-learning methods are well-suited for probing neural mechanisms of treatment outcomes. Our prior work applied one such approach, connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), to identify dissociable and substance-specific neural networks of cocaine and opioid abstinence. In Study 1, we aimed to replicate and extend prior work by testing the predictive ability of the cocaine network in an independent sample of 43 participants from a trial of

BACKGROUND: There is growing concern surrounding the role of repetitive sub-concussive head impacts, such as football heading, on brain health.
OBJECTIVES: Three questions were addressed while only considering studies that observed heading exposure directly: (1) how frequently does heading occur within football training and matches, (2) what are the biomechanical characteristics of heading, and (3) is cognitive function affected by heading?
METHODS: This review followed the steps described in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Electron

OBJECTIVE: User experience plays a crucial role in the interaction with virtual reality systems, especially in rehabilitation games for patients with brain injuries, who often face cognitive and motor challenges. User experience influences factors such as acceptance, engagement, and, importantly, the effectiveness of the intervention, all of which are key to achieving optimal recovery outcomes. While previous studies have examined the experiences of neurological populations, they have often focused on a single construct and used instruments that include irrelevant or confounding items. The obj

BACKGROUND: Although literature suggests that exercise can improve symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients, research on the effects of aerobic exercise and resistance training (AE&RT) in early-stage PD remains limited. Understanding the synergistic effects of these exercise modalities can provide valuable insights for optimizing exercise interventions for PD patients, particularly in the early stages of the disease, where interventions may have the greatest impact on long-term functional outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a combined AE&RT program on moto

This randomized controlled trial examined whether short-term intensive mindfulness training is associated with changes in executive task performance and prefrontal hemodynamic responses in elite athletes. Twenty-eight elite badminton athletes were randomly assigned to a 10-day mindfulness intervention or an active control (regular training plus neutral video viewing). Before and after the intervention, athletes completed the Tower of London (TOL) task while prefrontal responses were recorded using fNIRS; task accuracy (ACC) and reaction time (RT) were assessed. Neural responses were quantified
