We undertook an investigation to assess the utility of a recombinant Coccidioides immitis complement-fixing (CF) antigen for detecting CF antibody in sera from patients with coccidioidomycosis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays established that recombinant CF antigen and, for comparison, a commercially available coccidioidin were reactive with 19 of 19 sera from patients with active coccidioidomycosis. Two virus strains isolated from Aedes vexans nipponi and Aedes vexans vexans in 1976 and 1978, respectively, in Khabarovsk Territory were identified as Negishi virus. Among 176 human sera, 22.7% were found to contain complement-fixing antibodies to Negishi virus soluble antigen.

An immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody-capture immunoassay using peroxidase-labelled mumps antibodies is described and its suitability for the practical diagnosis of acute mumps infection is evaluated. All 45 patients with confirmed mumps infection showed specific mumps IgM antibodies in their sera. A four-year old girl developed signs of increased intracranial pressure (head-ache, vomiting, ataxia, tremor, papilledema, cranial suture spread). Abacterial meningoencephalitis due to herpes virus was diagnosed, while the initially suspected brain tumor was ruled out. Without specific therapy the patient recovered completely; even the cranial suture spread disappeared. This case report demonstrates an unusual and more benign course of central nervous herpes virus infection.

Cell culture-derived soluble Babesia bovis vaccine admixed with a saponin adjuvant was administered in 2 doses, 3 weeks between doses, to 18 yearling heifers. An additional 9 heifers served as nonvaccinated controls. Seven cows were inoculated with two strains of C. psittaci from bovine origin. Their chlamydial excretion, complement fixing (CF) antibody titer and hormonal pattern, at calving or abortion were monitored. We studied the persistence of naturally acquired cell-mediated immunity to rubella during early pregnancy. We compared lymphocyte transformation responses to phytohemagglutinin and rubella virus in 35 naturally immune women aged 17-37 years, in the first trimester of pregnancy, with 49 naturally immune age-matched nonpregnant controls. Two outbreaks of campylobacter enteritis in residential student populations are described. In the first outbreak, 34 of 240 students in one hall of residence became ill over the course of 4 or 5 days. A single serotype of C. jejuni was isolated from sample of faeces. Sixteen cases of coccidioidomycosis involving bone and joints were treated with Amphotericin B. In all systemic or disseminated cases Amphotericin B should be prescribed.
