Laparoscopic surgical treatment was performed at 55 patients with acute amebian liver abscess. The diagnosis of acute amebian liver abscess was verified with clinical, serological, echoscopic, x-ray and CT methods. The laparoscopic method permits to sanify the abscess cavity of any localization. All the 55 patients have been discharged in good health. Laparoscopic method is maximally rational, associated with minimal surgical trauma, permits to decrease hospital stay and period of postoperative rehabilitation.

From June 1978 through December 1980, at least 36 cases of amebiasis occurred in persons who had had colonic-irrigation therapy at a chiropractic clinic in western Colorado. Of 10 persons who required colectomy, six did. Of 176 persons who had been to the clinic in the last four months of 1980, 80 had received other forms of treatment. Twenty-one per cent of the colonic-irrigation group had bloody diarrhea, as compared with 1 per cent of the non-irrigation group (P = 0.00013). Thirty-seven per cent of the colonic-irrigation group who submitted specimens had evidence of amebic infection on eith

Amoebiasis is a parasitosis, mainly caused by Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica). It is a common disease in tropical and subtropical regions. E. histolytica possesses different mechanisms of pathogenicity, and might lead to the invasion and lysis of the intestinal epithelium. Outside of the high-risk regions, acute intestinal amoebiasis is a very rare condition, often leading to misdiagnosis and death, if not promptly treated. We discuss the cases of 18 and 43 year-old men without medical history, who presented to the emergency department complaining of acute abdominal pain along with feve…

BACKGROUND: Cases of Entamoeba histolytica infections in the Netherlands are usually imported diseases. The most common extra-intestinal manifestation of E. histolytica is the amoebic abscess. Patients can present with a clinical picture of colitis with pain in the upper right abdomen, accompanied by fever in cases of liver abscess. Diagnostics focus mainly on the detection of E. histolytica with PCR or ELISA. Infections are treated with metronidazole, with clioquinol as follow-up treatment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old, previously healthy man was admitted to hospital with pain in the uppe…

Although amebic brain abscess is a rare form of invasive amebiasis, when present, it is frequently lethal. This disorder always begins with the infection of the colon by Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites, which then travel to extra-intestinal tissues through the bloodstream. Amebic brain abscesses are produced when trophozoites invade the central nervous system. Computerized axial tomography scans can be used to diagnose the presence or absence of a brain abscess with a certainty of 100%. However, this diagnostic tool does not reveal the etiological agent of disease. By analyzing the clinical…

A national training project in the diagnosis of intestinal parasites was conducted in 1997. An initial national course was followed respectively by courses in the Central, Eastern, and Western Provinces. Our results showed that Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and leukocytes showed a significantly lower percentage of errors after the training than before (p < 0.01). The same occurred with Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar and Chilomastix mesnilii (p < 0.05). Among the helminths, Taenia spp., Fasciola hepatica, and hookworm showed significantly fewer errors after the training (p <…
