Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of pediatric intracranial empyemas in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial infections due to sinusitis and otitis, although rare, can progress rapidly and result in significant morbidity, necessitating multifaceted management including extended antibiotic therapy and surgical intervention. Predominantly affecting infants and older children, these infections have seen a perceived increase in incidence following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of intracranial infections secondary to sinusitis or otitis in the pediatric population and ass

Longitudinal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Detects Onset and Progression of Chronic Rhinosinusitis from Infancy to School Age in Cystic Fibrosis.

Rationale: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) contributes to morbidity in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). However, longitudinal data on CRS onset and progression is lacking. Objectives: To longitudinally evaluate CRS in CF from infancy to school age with paranasal sinus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: A total of 64 children with CF (mean age at baseline, 1.1 ± 1.6 yr; range, 0-5 yr) underwent a mean of 5.8 ± 2.2 (range, 3-11 yr) subsequent annual MRI examinations. Additional 24 children (9.2 ± 4.4 yr; range, 3-17 yr) homozygous for the F508del mutation underwent MRI before and at leas

[Simple evaluation of CT findings in the paranasal sinuses for chronic sinusitis].

The CT scores and scoring for improvement based on them, which we proposed previously, is a simple and highly reproducible method of evaluation of sinus units before and after an operation for chronic sinusitis. We compared this evaluation method with the results of quantitative assay and showed its advantages and disadvantages. The subjects were 258 sinuses in patients who underwent endonasal sinus surgery (ESS) in the department of otolaryngology, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Hospital from April 1996 to April 1997. The subjects were evaluated according to the following 4 grades n

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease presenting with hypertrophy and sclerosis of the inferior turbinate.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a novel clinical disease entity characterized by elevated serum IgG4 concentration and tumefaction or tissue infiltration by IgG4+ plasma cells.1 We report the case of a 56-year-old man who presented with nasal obstruction for 5 years. Rhinoscopy revealed hypertrophy and sclerosis of the inferior turbinate, whereas computed tomography revealed inflammation of the anterior ethmoid sinus and frontal sinuses. An endoscopic inferior turbinectomy was performed, and IgG4-RD was definitively diagnosed based on the histopathological features of the turbin

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses after successful curative therapy: a case report and literature review.

This report describes a 40-year-old male patient with symptoms affecting the nasal sinuses including nasal obstruction and olfactory anesthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated that the tumor eroded the adjacent bone and bilateral frontal lobes. The biopsy sample of the left nasal mass was processed for both H&E staining and immunohistological staining for various markers. The final histological examination showed large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with poor differentiation. After a general evaluation, the patient was staged as cT4bN0M0. The patient was treated by combined radiotherap

[Magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of lacrimal tract pathology].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to examine 45 patients (23 females and 22 males) aged 16-67 years with lacrimal tract pathology on a Sigma Gorizont magnetic resonance (MR) tomograph ("General Electric"). This yielded head MR scans in the frontal, axial, and sagittal projections. The thickness of MR sections was 2-3 mm. MRI provides direct images in 3 projections, permitting a full estimation of the lacrimal tract and its adjacent soft tissues. MRI is recommended for use in the examination of patients with complicates pathological processes after ineffective operations on the lacrimal

The Hajdu-Cheney syndrome. A review of the literature and report of 3 cases.

The Hajdu-Cheney syndrome or acro-osteolysis syndrome is a rare disease. Only 18 well-documented cases are described in the literature. Presentation of cases in the oral surgical literature is rare. The syndrome is characterized by dissolution of terminal phalanges of the hands and feet, dolichocephaly, open cranial sutures, multiple wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, wide open sella turcica, progressive basilar invagination, early loss of teeth, short stature and characteristic facies. Inheritance is most likely autosomal dominant. 3 patients are presented, 2 of them are mother and so

Frontal sinus surgery: its evolution, present standard of care, and recommendations for current use.

From a historical perspective, frontal sinus surgery has evolved from radical, highly invasive, disfiguring approaches to function-preserving, minimally invasive, and non-disfiguring intranasal procedures. Most sinus surgeons would agree that a sound surgical procedure is one that relieves patients' symptoms and provides a safe sinus in which future intracranial and orbital complications will not occur. For the future, sinus surgeons are searching for the ideal procedure, ie, one that is minimally invasive, reversible, and ensures the patient a safe frontal sinus for the long term. The ideal s

The frontal sinus rescue procedure: early experience and three-year follow-up.

The frontal sinus rescue (FSR), first described in 1997, has now been performed on 24 patients (32 sides) over a period of three years. It is a functional endoscopic surgical approach to correct an iatrogenically scarred and obstructed frontal recess, which cannot be successfully opened via a normal endoscopic frontal sinusotomy approach. It is utilized primarily for patients whose only remaining option is either a Draf-type drill-out (modified intranasal Lothrop) procedure or frontal sinus obliteration. The FSR is a technically challenging procedure, but faster, less difficult, and less destr

Frontal Mass That Varies in Size With Body Position: A Surgical Treatment of a Rare Case of Sinus Pericrania.

Sinus pericranii (SP) is a vascular malformation characterized by abnormal communication between extracranial scalp venous channels and intracranial sinuses. Owing to its rarity, it is prone to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. A typical characteristic of SP is that the size of the mass is related to its position. To date, there are no uniform criteria for SP treatment options and prognosis. This article reports an innovative surgical method for the complete cure of an adult frontal SP. The authors systematically displayed the extracranial, cranial, and intracranial parts of the SP, and the autho

A nasal osteoma with an acute course in a Japanese Black heifer.

A 14-month-old Japanese Black heifer presented with unilateral epistaxis and mild swelling of the right face. Radiography revealed a mass with increased radiopacity on the right side of the nasal bridge, extending to the left side. Intranasal endoscopy confirmed a large tumor-like structure protruding into the nasal cavity. Following euthanasia, cranial computed tomography (CT) was performed, revealing a tumor 24.3 × 17.5 × 14.8 cm in size. The tumor occupied the entire right nasal cavity and the frontal and sphenoid sinuses. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor consisted of w

An isolated nasolacrimal duct osteoma.

Osteomas of the nose and paranasal sinus are common benign tumors that can extend to surrounding structures and result in orbital or intracranial involvement. Presenting symptoms include facial pain, headache, cerebral symptoms, ocular symptoms, and so on, depending on the location and size of the tumor. They commonly occur within the frontal, ethmoid, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses; however, there are rare cases of reported osteomas in the nasal cavity, turbinate, or orbit. Our case report describes a patient with nasolacrimal duct osteoma who presented with ipsilateral ocular pain, epiphora

Acute subdural hematoma originating from the lacerated intracranial internal carotid arteries--case report.

A 51-year-old male presented with laceration of the bilateral intracranial internal carotid arteries (ICAs) manifesting as acute subdural hematoma (SDH) after a fall of 3 m. Brain computed tomography showed acute SDH appearing as irregular mixed high and low density and causing midline shift. During the operation, massive liquiform hematoma flowed out from the deep portion around the cranial base and systemic blood pressure decreased abruptly. Hemostasis was impossible and he died soon after the operation. Autopsy revealed skull fractures in the bilateral sphenoidal, orbital, temporal, frontal

[The facial approach to the median structures of the skull base].

Numerous routes of access to the medial basal structures of the cranium have been described, largely because of the wide variety of lesions observed in deep localizations. Access can be achieve via trans-sinusal, transfacial (trans-sphenoidal rhinoseptal, mediofacial or Lefort I), trans-oro-pharyngeal and numerous other routes. An examination of the principals involved, their development and the technical modalities demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each and their specific indications. Access is particularly interesting with the frontal trans-sphenoid, Lefort I osteotomy and tran

Multiple Wormian bones and their relation with definite pathological conditions in a case of an adult cranium.

Wormian bones, also known as intrasutural bones, are present as an anatomical variation in healthy individuals. However, a higher than the usual incidence can be an important feature of some congenital pathological conditions. In this study we describe a case of an adult cranium with multiple Wormian bones. The cranium was a single sample obtained from an archaeological excavation in Vinitsa, Northeastern Bulgaria, and probably dated in the Chalcolithic. The Chalcolithic is a period of human history connected with discovering and using of copper. Actually, it is a transitional phase between th
