Microplastics (MPs), defined as particles with a diameter <5 mm, are increasingly recognized as important global environmental stressors due to their ubiquity and harmful effects on organisms. Although most studies have investigated the direct biological effects of MPs, their role in the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance remains less explored. Thanks to their hydrophobic surfaces, MPs act as substrates for microbial colonization, giving rise to the plastisphere-a microenvironment that hosts opportunistic and clinically relevant bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Vibrio spp., and

The human microbiome serves as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), collectively known as the resistome, which has crucial implications for human health. However, the distribution of ARGs across diverse bacterial taxa and their variation across populations, disease states, and body sites remain less well understood. Here, we comprehensively profiled the human resistome using genomic and metagenomic data. Our analysis included 4,744 species-representative gut bacterial genomes and 452 oral bacterial genomes, along with gut metagenomic data from 10,230 individuals across 58 studies

Species of the genus Streptococcus constitute important pathogens in human and veterinary medicine, being responsible for a wide spectrum of infections ranging from mild illnesses to severe invasive pathologies. Although β-lactams continue to be effective against most species, the global increase in resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, tetracyclines, and, in some cases, reduced susceptibility to penicillin represents a growing challenge for antimicrobial therapy. This review synthesizes the clinical and epidemiological landscape of antimicrobial resistance in the main Streptococcus species,

Fosfomycin has reemerged as an important therapeutic option against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli, particularly extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains causing UTIs. The rising incidence of carbapenem-resistant and ESBL-producing E. coli has reduced the number of therapeutic alternatives available and rekindled interest in fosfomycin as a successful therapy alternative, particularly for UTIs. Fosfomycin is a significant therapeutic drug in contemporary clinical practice due to its distinct mode of action, advantageous pharmacokinetic characteristics, oral availabili

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global issue driven by the overuse of antibiotics in healthcare, agriculture, and veterinary settings. Wastewater and treatment plants (WWTPs) act as reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The One Health approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in addressing AMR. This scoping review analyzes wastewater's role in the AMR spread, identifies influencing factors, and highlights research gaps to guide interventions.
METHODS: This scoping review

Mycotoxins, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are significant environmental pollutants that pose considerable threats to environmental health and human safety through the food chain. This study is the first to investigate the impact of deoxynivalenol (DON), the most common mycotoxin, on antibiotic resistance dynamics in gut microbiota, demonstrating that DON exposure significantly selects for ARB and ARGs. Results indicated that 80.69 % of the ARGs with the highest increase in the DON group were exclusive to gram-positive bacteria, particularly those r

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne bacterial pathogen distributed worldwide. Serotyping is extensively applied in the classification of L. monocytogenes and is crucial in the early stage of epidemiological tracing. Among the 13 serovars, 1/2a, 1/2b, 1/2c, and 4b are the ones most frequently isolated. Numerous PCR-based methods have been presented, however, their target genes, lmo0737, ORF2110 and ORF2819, are prone to horizontal transfer or loss in certain strains, thus leading to incorrect serovar designation. Herein, we selected novel sero-specific genes and developed an improved multiple

Heat stress can lead to protein misfolding and aggregation, potentially causing cell death due to the loss of essential proteins. Bacteria, being particularly exposed to environmental stress, are equipped with disaggregases that rescue these aggregated proteins. The bacterial Hsp70 chaperone DnaK and the ATPase associated with diverse cellular activities protein ClpB form the canonical disaggregase in bacteria. While this combination operates effectively during physiological heat stress, it is ineffective against massive aggregation caused by temperature-based sterilization protocols used in t

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is an important economic freshwater aquaculture fish originating from North America. However, the frequent outbreaks of Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus (MSRV) have seriously limited the healthy development of Micropterus salmoides farming industry. In the present study, a strain of MSRV was isolated and identified from infected largemouth bass by PCR, transmission electron micrograph observation and genome sequences analysis, and tentatively named MSRV-HZ01 strain. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the MSRV-HZ01 presented the highest similarity to MSRV

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mounting evidence indicates that habitats such as wastewater and environmental waters are pathways for the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and mobile antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). We identified antibiotic-resistant members of the genera Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, and Pseudomonas as key opportunistic pathogens that grow or persist in built (e.g., wastewater) or natural aquatic environments. Effective methods for monitoring these ARB in the environment are needed to understand their influence on dissemination of ARB and ARGs, but standard methods have not be

Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1) sequence type (ST) 23 is one of the most commonly detected STs in Italy where it currently causes all investigated outbreaks. ST23 has caused both epidemic and sporadic cases between 1995 and 2018 and was analysed at genomic level and compared with ST23 isolated in other countries to determine possible similarities and differences. A core genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST), based on a previously described set of 1,521 core genes, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) approaches were applied to an ST23 collection including genomes from Ital

Horizontal gene transfer can trigger rapid shifts in bacterial evolution. Driven by a variety of mobile genetic elements-in particular bacteriophages and plasmids-the ability to share genes within and across species underpins the exceptional adaptability of bacteria. Nevertheless, invasive mobile genetic elements can also present grave risks to the host; bacteria have therefore evolved a vast array of defences against these elements1. Here we identify two plasmid defence systems conserved in the Vibrio cholerae El Tor strains responsible for the ongoing seventh cholera pandemic2-4. These syste

The ecology of the most relevant Vibrio species for human health and their relation to water quality and biogeochemistry were studied in two estuaries in Argentinian Patagonia. Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were reported in >29% of cases at the Río Colorado and Río Negro estuaries. Neither the pandemic serogroups of Vibrio cholerae O1, Vibrio cholerae O139 nor the cholera toxin gene were detected in this study. However, several strains of V. cholerae (not O1 or O139) are able to cause human disease or acquire pathogenic genes by horizontal transfer. Vibrio vulnificus was detected

Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for the potentially life-threatening food-borne disease listeriosis. One epidemic-associated clonal group of L. monocytogenes, epidemic clone I (ECI), harbors a Sau3AI-like restriction-modification (RM) system also present in the same genomic region in certain strains of other lineages. In this study, we identified and characterized two other, novel type II RM systems, LmoJ2 and LmoJ3, at this same locus. LmoJ2 and LmoJ3 appeared to recognize GCWGC (W = A or T) and GCNGC, respectively. Both RM systems consisted of genes with GC content below the genome ave

Five genes homologous to the well-known omp25 and omp31 genes, that code for two major Brucella spp. outer membrane proteins (OMPs), have been detected in the genome of Brucella melitensis 16M and Brucella suis 1330. In this work we have determined the nucleotide sequence of these five genes, named omp31b, omp25b, omp25c, omp25d and omp22, in the six classical Brucella species reference strains and in representative strains of the recently proposed species Brucella cetaceae and Brucella pinnipediae that classify the Brucella strains isolated in the last years from marine mammals. Klebsiella pneumoniae is an emerging global threat driven by rising antimicrobial resistance and the spread of hypervirulent lineages. To investigate its evolving genomic landscape in India, we characterized two clinical K. pneumoniae isolates, NG_299 and NG_300, obtained from a tertiary care hospital in Pune and analyzed them in the context of Indian and global isolate collections. Comprehensive phenotypic and genomic analyses were performed using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, Illumina NovaSeq whole-genome sequencing and PCR-based confirmation of resistance and virulence markers.
