BACKGROUND: To determine the effects of hypertonic saline (HS) as fluid resuscitation during or after major spinal surgery. We hypothesized that the administration of HS perioperatively would decrease morbidity and mortality rates.

The aims of this study are twofold. The first is to describe the ultrastructural morphology of putative osmoreceptors concentrated in the ventral aspect of the lamina terminalis in the rat forebrain. The medical records of 2055 patients undergoing late abortions were reviewed. These represented 15% of all abortions induced over 10 years. In 52%, abortion was performed between 13-16 weeks, and in 25% at or after 20 weeks. Abortion was requested for risk to health in 55% and for failed contraception in 40%. BACKGROUND: Topical saline is commonly recommended after endoscopic sinus surgery. The efficacy in this situation has never been shown.
METHODS: We performed a controlled clinical trial to determine the effect of saline sprays on symptoms after endoscopic sinus surgery. Patients were randomized to receive normal saline (NS; n = 20), buffered hypertonic saline (HS; n = 20), or no spray (n = 20). A questionnaire measured symptoms of nasal obstruction, discharge, pain, headache, and trouble sleeping. Daily pain medication usage was recorded.

Ehrlich cells exposed to a hypertonic medium for five hours respond by an increased expression of Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransport proteins as estimated from immunoprecipitations using polyclonal anti-cotransporter antibodies. The 3.4-fold increase in cotransport expression is followed by a concomitant 2.6-fold increase in the maximal bumetanide-sensitive K+ influx during regulatory volume increase, indicating a 2.6-fold increase in the number of functional cotransporters in the plasma membrane.
