BACKGROUND: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has become a very common 1-stage procedure in bariatric surgery. Postsleeve chronic fistulas could be one of the possible complications and represent a true challenge for the surgeons. After the failure of more conservative treatments, including surgical and endoscopic approaches, laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) could be an alternative treatment proposal. The objective of this study was to evaluate outcomes of patients who underwent laparoscopic total gastrectomy for the treatment of postsleeve chronic fistula.
METHODS: Retrospectively review the data

Of 957 patients undergoing operation for benign gastric ulcer and its complications from 1965 through June 1975, 90 had perforated ulcers. Among these were four patients in whom a gastrocolic fistula had formed. Although two of the four patients had symptoms due to peptic ulcer dating back 12 and 68 months, symptoms of a gastrocolic fistula were the initial presentation of ulcer disease in the other two. All four patients had watery diarrhea and weight loss, and barium enema examination was diagnostic in each case. The perforating ulcers were located in the distal stomach on the greater curvat

The involvement of T helper cells in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, has been a subject of considerable research interest. The clinical picture of IBD is characterised by chronic intestinal inflammatory processes that may lead to complications such as stenoses, abscesses, fistulas and colorectal cancer. Recent findings have indicated that T helper 9 (Th9) cells, which secrete the cytokine IL-9, play a role in the pathogenesis of IBD. These cells have been observed to damage the intestinal epithelium by IL-9 production and

Thanks to increasingly number imaging techniques, sonography is no longer indicated solely for the examination of the parenchymal organs of the abdominal cavity, but also for the small and large intestine. It has an important role in differential diagnosis of pain in the right hypogastrium, particularly when acute appendicitis is suspected. Sonography is also used in patients suspected from acute diverticulitis. Other intestinal wall pathologies can be well identified by sonography though the image is often non-specific, and such lesions are difficult to identify in terms of aetiology. A promi

A 45-year-old man was admitted to hospital on November 26, 1985 with the chief complaint of left hypochondrial pain. Excretory and retrograde pyelography revealed left hydronephrosis due to extrinsic obstruction of ureter. Computerized tomography and angiography revealed that a tumor of the small intestine was the cause of ureteral obstruction. In addition to the presence of a tumor, a fistula in the small intestine was disclosed on the upper gastrointestinal series. During the operation, a large mass which involved several organs was identified without mobility. The sophisticated operation wa

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease. The aetiology and pathogenesis of CD are still unclear. Anal fistula is the main complication of CD and is a difficult problem to solve at present. The main limitation of developing new therapies is bound up with the short of preclinical security and effectiveness data. Therefore, an ideal animal model is needed to establish persistent anal fistula and an inflamed rectal mucosa.
AIM: To improve the induction method of colitis and establish a reliable and reproducible perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease

Postoperative bleeding from a gastroduodenal artery (GDA) pseudoaneurysm is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication following pancreatoduodenectomy. While it can often be controlled with timely intervention, it carries the risk of rare, challenging secondary complications. We discuss in this report an elderly male who underwent a pancreatico-duodenectomy. Fourteen months postsurgery, he presented with bleeding and abdominal pain. Following an immediate CT angiogram, endovascular coil embolisation of the GDA pseudoaneurysm, along with the placement of a covered stent in the comm

Gastrojejunocolic fistula is a rare but serious complication of pancreaticoduodenectomy that can lead to malabsorption and severe undernutrition. A 59-year-old man presented with leg edema and significant weight loss 8 years after undergoing subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. After preoperative nutritional improvement (guided by indirect calorimetry), the patient underwent fistula resection and Roux-en-Y reconstruction. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 37, and his nutritional parameters remained adequate at the one-year follow-up. This case demonstrates the val

Cholecystoenteric fistula is a rare complication of cholelithiasis, occurring in 3%-5% of patients with cholelithiasis. The symptoms are typically minimal and vague, with either acute or subacute presentations, rarely leading to bowel obstruction, and occasionally manifesting as chronic abdominal pain. In this case, a male patient in his early 30s presented with epigastric and right hypochondrial pain. On evaluation, he was diagnosed with gallstone disease and adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder. During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a cholecystocolonic fistula was unexpectedly discovered. The f

Primary aortoenteric fistulas (AEF) are rare. The majority of these are due to atherosclerotic aortic aneurysms. Mycotic aortic aneurysms leading to primary AEF are exceedingly uncommon. Here we report a rare case of primary AEF secondary to Salmonella-related mycotic aneurysm and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic issues.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of cystoscopy and cystography, as compared to other diagnostic studies, in identifying vesicoenteric fistulae (VEF) in a contemporary series of patients with surgically confirmed VEF.
METHODS: With institutional review board approval, we performed a single-center retrospective review of surgically confirmed VEF between 2002 and 2018. Demographic data, comorbidities, symptoms, and diagnostic evaluation were reviewed. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of cystoscopy in diagnosis of VEF were compared to cross-sectional imagi

Bouveret´s syndrome refers to the condition of gastric outlet obstruction caused by the impaction of a large gallstone into the duodenum after passage through a cholecystoduodenal fistula. Many endoscopic and surgical techniques have been described in the management of this syndrome, however the morbidity and mortality are still very high. We present the case of a 67-year-old female patient with Bouveret´s syndrome, with successful resolution with surgical treatment after two failed endoscopic treatments.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine that can cause an attack by contiguity of the urinary tract. Although the shape is common and fistulizing 35% of all patients with CD, entero-urinary fistulas are rare and only seen in 2-8% of patients. aim: To report the frequency of occurrence of this complication among the group of surgical forms of CD. Describe the different pathophysiological mechanisms of occurrence of entero-vesical fistula (EVF) during the CD. methods: We report, retrospectively, seven observations of EVF complicating MC made during the

Internal fistulization of the colon to other organs, such as the urinary bladder, vagina, or small bowel is a relatively common complication associated with inflammatory diseases such as diverticulitis, Crohn disease, as well as neoplasia such as colorectal cancer or lymphoma. However, fistulization of the colon to the spleen is an exceedingly rare condition described by few in the literature.
