PURPOSE: To assess the accuracy of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) as a localizing technique for colorectal resections, and its impact on surgical management.

We review our experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, with indications, technical aspects and results. Between 1992 and 31/12/2000, we performed 113 laparoscopic or laparoscopically assisted colorectal operations. Of 79 malignant cases, 37 operations were oncologically radical and therapeutic, 42 were palliative. Described here is a case of constriction of the ileal loop caused by a volvulus forming on an internal hernia through the mesenteric opening in the anastomotic colonic stumps, following left laparoscopic-assisted hemicolectomy. This experience indicates the need for closure of mesenteric gaps with a continuous suture after laparoscopic-assisted left hemicolectomy.

We report herein the case of a 75-year-old man who developed anal canal metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Initially, he underwent a right middle and lower lobectomy combined with left atrial wall resection under cardiopulmonary bypass. He presented 3 months later with an anal polyp which had prolapsed and bled, for which he underwent a transanal polypectomy. Histologically, the polyp was classified as squamous cell carcinoma and considered to be a metastasis from the primary lung cancer. He is presently well with no signs of recurrence 9 months after his initial operation. T

Occult blood test for the screening of colon cancer has been made by immunological method using latex agglutination for 4 years since 1988. A total of 35,139 persons have received the screening test and out of 1886 persons, that is, 5.4% showed positive. Five hundred seventy of the positive result subjects (30.2%) underwent barium enema examination. Three hundred fifty nine subjects (62.8%) showed some abnormal findings. They underwent colonoscopic examination and 45 of them (7.9%) had colon cancer. Twenty six of these were of early stage type and 19 persons were of advanced stage.

Distinctive cutaneous lesions frequently accompany and occasionally precede the intestinal lesions in Gardner's syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and Muir's syndrome.
