Incisor and molar overjet, arch contraction, and molar relationship in the mixed dentition in repaired complete unilateral cleft lip and palate: A qualitative and quantitative appraisal.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the mixed dentition incisor and molar overjet, severity of contraction of the dental arch, and the sagittal molar relationship on the cleft side vs the noncleft side in children with repaired complete unilateral cleft of the lip and palate (UCLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthodontic records taken prior to orthodontic preparation for alveolar bone grafting were screened to select study casts from patients with nonsyndromic repaired complete UCLP who did not have mandibular skeletal or dental asymmetry. The study sample comprised dental casts from 74 children aged 8.9 ± 1 y

Correction of a severe Class II malocclusion in a patient with Noonan syndrome.

Noonan syndrome is a developmental disorder characterized by a dysmorphic facial structure, short stature, and mild mental retardation, with associated cardiac defects and skeletal malformations. It may be sporadic or inherited as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait. The incidence of occurrence is 1 in 1000 to 2500 live births. The responsible gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 12. Diagnosis of the syndrome is made by both clinical inspection and karyotype. This is the case report of a 10-year-old Mexican boy who was referred for correction of orofacial and occlusal defects.

Changes in facial appearance after maxillomandibular advancement for severe obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome in Chinese patients: a subjective and objective evaluation.

This study evaluates the outcome and change in facial appearance after maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) in Chinese adults with severe obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS). Twelve patients underwent MMA with adjunctive procedures for severe OSAHS. All underwent physical examination, Epworth Sleepiness Scale evaluation, cephalometry, polysomnography, and facial photographic assessment before and 6 months after MMA. The aesthetic plane (relationship of nose, lips, and chin) was used to judge soft tissue facial profile change after MMA. Postoperative cephalometric data were compa

Apical root resorption comparison between Fränkel and eruption guidance appliances.

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study were to compare the amounts of apical root resorption that occur after treatment with 2 removable appliances-the Fränkel function regulator and the eruption guidance appliance (EGA)-in an untreated control group, and to determine the prevalence of root resorption in the maxillary and mandibular incisors and the dental arches. METHODS: After treatment, periapical radiographs were obtained of the maxillary and mandibular incisors with the long-cone paralleling technique from 72 patients divided into 3 groups. Group 1 included 24 patients treated with t

Changes in gingival recession related to orthodontic treatment of traumatic deep bites in adults.

INTRODUCTION: It was the aim of this investigation to establish whether orthodontic treatment of traumatic deep bites can restore trauma-related gingival recessions in adults. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-one incisor sites with trauma-related recession (group Tr) and 54 trauma-free sites (group NonTr) were diagnosed in the upper palatal or lower buccal regions in twelve adult patients (mean age 38.3 +/- 8.1 years). The 48 antagonistic sites on the buccal aspects of the upper incisors (Ubuc) and 47 sites on the lingual aspects of the lower incisors (L-ling) were also evaluated. Changes in clini

Correction of Class II deep overbite and dental and skeletal asymmetry with 2 types of palatal miniscrews.

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 31-year-old woman who had a Class II molar relationship, anterior crowding, deep overbite, maxillary dental midline deviation, vertical maxillary asymmetry, and a hyperdivergent facial pattern. The maxillary right first premolar and the left second premolar were extracted asymmetrically to correct the anterior crowding and the maxillary dental midline deviation. The maxillary molars were intruded with a midpalatal miniscrew, which helped to correct the vertical molar asymmetry and close the mandibular plane. The palatal miniscrew in the

The extraction of permanent second molars and its effect on the dentofacial complex of patients treated with the Tip-Edge appliance.

The aim of this investigation was to assess the dentofacial changes in a group of patients consecutively treated with Tip-Edge appliances and the extraction of four permanent second molars by one specialist orthodontic practitioner. Before and after treatment lateral cephalograms and study cast measurements of 45 individuals, 26 females (mean age 13.8 years) and 19 males (mean age 13.9 years), were collated and statistically analysed. Cephalometric variables that exhibited, before treatment, significant sex differences, included SNA, SNB (both smaller in males, P < 0.05) and U1-NA degrees (P <

Intraoral craniofacial manipulation by using MRI appliance.

This case illustrates the use of the Maxillary-Rotation-Impaction Appliance (MRI) to rotate and impact the maxilla. When this maneuver was completed the transverse expansion screw widened the maxillary arch. The case was completed using fixed orthodontic appliances. The result is that the facial bones appear in the correct position and the teeth are correctly positioned in the face with a class I occlusion.

Idiopathic condylar resorption: diagnosis, treatment protocol, and outcomes.

Idiopathic condylar resorption is a poorly understood progressive disease that affects the TMJ and that can result in malocclusion, facial disfigurement, TMJ dysfunction, and pain. This article presents the diagnostic criteria for idiopathic condylar resorption and a new treatment protocol for management of this pathologic condition. Idiopathic condylar resorption most often occurs in teenage girls but can occur at any age, although rarely over the age of 40 years. These patients have a common facial morphology including: (1) high occlusal and mandibular plane angles, (2) progressively retrudi

Oropharyngeal airway dimensions and functional-orthopedic treatment in skeletal Class II cases.

Mandibular deficiency may be a factor in reduced oropharyngeal airway (OAW) dimensions and related impaired respiratory function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of functional-orthopedic devices in increasing OAW dimensions in children with Class II skeletal patterns (ANB > 4) and clinically deficient mandibles. Comparisons were made between two groups, one comprising 26 treated patients and the other comprising 15 controls. Student's t-tests, paired t-tests, discriminant analyses, and Pearson's r-correlation coefficients were performed to evaluate group differences and to se

Evaluation of an intraoral maxillary molar distalization technique.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the pendulum appliance on distalization of maxillary molars and the reciprocal effects on the anchor premolars and maxillary incisors. Initial and follow-up cephalometric radiographs were obtained on 41 subjects (26 girls and 15 boys) who were treated with the pendulum appliance for bilateral distalization of the maxillary first molar teeth, for correction of the Class II molar relationship or for gaining space in the maxillary arch. Dental casts were available on 31 patients. Dental, skeletal, and soft tissue changes were determined. T

Two Class II, division 1 patients with congenitally missing lower central incisors.

Although orthodontic treatment objectives and procedures for apparent protrusion of the maxillary teeth vary among orthodontists and specific cases, the differences are even greater where there is disharmony of jaw relationship between the maxilla and the mandible. The two cases presented in this article resemble each other in appearance, but the growth patterns and reactions to appliance, as well as treatment progress, are quite different. The initial excessive overjet seemed equally severe. Treatment was started at the same age, both patients were eldest daughters, both had a convex type fac
