Computer vs human: Deep learning versus perceptual training for the detection of neck of femur fractures.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the accuracy of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for detecting neck of femur (NoF) fractures on radiographs, in comparison with perceptual training in medically-naïve individuals. METHODS: This study extends a previous study that conducted perceptual training in medically-naïve individuals for the detection of NoF fractures on a variety of dataset sizes. The same anteroposterior hip radiograph dataset was used to train two DCNNs (AlexNet and GoogLeNet) to detect NoF fractures. For direct comparison with perceptual training results, deep learning was complet

Fusion of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Microaneurysm Detection in Color Fundus Images.

Microaneurysms (MAs) are common signsof several diseases, appearing as small circular darkish spots in color fundus images. The presence of even a single MA may suggest diseases (e.g. diabetic retinopathy), thus, their reliable recognition is a critical issue in both human clinical practice and computer-aided systems. As for their automatic recognition, deep learning techniques became very popular in the recent years. In this paper, we also apply such deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based techniques; however, we organize them into a supernetwork with a fusionbased approach. The combin

Time series model for forecasting the number of new admission inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Hospital crowding is a rising problem, effective predicting and detecting managment can helpful to reduce crowding. Our team has successfully proposed a hybrid model combining both the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and the nonlinear autoregressive neural network (NARNN) models in the schistosomiasis and hand, foot, and mouth disease forecasting study. In this paper, our aim is to explore the application of the hybrid ARIMA-NARNN model to track the trends of the new admission inpatients, which provides a methodological basis for reducing crowding. METHODS: We use

A CHF detection method based on deep learning with RR intervals.

There are extensive studies investigating congestive heart failure (CHF) detection based on heart rate variability. Although a high level of accuracy has been achieved, its robustness under different conditions is not guaranteed. To improve the robustness, we applied sparse auto-encoder-based deep learning algorithm in CHF detection with RR intervals. A total data size of 30,592 (5-min RR interval) was obtained from 72 healthy persons and 44 CHF patients. The deep learning algorithm first extracts unsupervised features using a sparse auto-encoder from raw RR intervals, then constructs a deep n

Predicting mental conditions based on "history of present illness" in psychiatric notes with deep neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Applications of natural language processing to mental health notes are not common given the sensitive nature of the associated narratives. The CEGS N-GRID 2016 Shared Task in Clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) changed this scenario by providing the first set of neuropsychiatric notes to participants. This study summarizes our efforts and results in proposing a novel data use case for this dataset as part of the third track in this shared task. OBJECTIVE: We explore the feasibility and effectiveness of predicting a set of common mental conditions a patient has based on the

Performance of neural networks for localizing moving objects with an artificial lateral line.

Fish are able to sense water flow velocities relative to their body with their mechanoreceptive lateral line organ. This organ consists of an array of flow detectors distributed along the fish body. Using the excitation of these individual detectors, fish can determine the location of nearby moving objects. Inspired by this sensory modality, it is shown here how neural networks can be used to extract an object's location from simulated excitation patterns, as can be measured along arrays of stationary artificial flow velocity sensors. The applicability, performance and robustness with respect

Short-term plasticity based network model of place cells dynamics.

Rodent hippocampus exhibits strikingly different regimes of population activity in different behavioral states. During locomotion, hippocampal activity oscillates at theta frequency (5-12 Hz) and cells fire at specific locations in the environment, the place fields. As the animal runs through a place field, spikes are emitted at progressively earlier phases of the theta cycles. During immobility, hippocampus exhibits sharp irregular bursts of activity, with occasional rapid orderly activation of place cells expressing a possible trajectory of the animal. The mechanisms underlying this rich rep

[Identification methods of crop and weeds based on Vis/NIR spectroscopy and RBF-NN model].

The automated recognition of crop and weed by using Vis/NIR spectral in field is one of hottest research branches of agriculture engineering. If the recognition is efficient and effective, then the variate operations of herbicide or fertilizer spraying in field could be realized. Many researches have pointed out that the reflectance rate of green plant leaves could be used to identify the varieties. As the colors and surface textures of crop and weed were change in different living phases, these changes may exert great influence on the reflectance spectral of plant leaves. Vis/NIR spectra of t

Model for cascading failures in functional networks: application to epileptic patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

The dynamic process of epilepsy is modeled as a cascading failure model in functional networks derived from graph theory. The aim is to test whether cascading failure identified from functional magnetic resonance imaging data could simulate epileptic discharges in 18 subjects with generalized tonic-clonic seizure and 17 demographically matched healthy controls. A cascading failure model was used to simulate the neural networks underlying generalized tonic-clonic seizure and healthy controls by stimulation of the node with the greatest number of connections. Results showed that the efficiency o

Neural network model for completing occluded contours.

When some parts of a pattern are occluded by other objects, the visual system can often estimate the shape of occluded contours from visible parts of the contours. This paper proposes a neural network model capable of such function, which is called amodal completion. The model is a hierarchical multi-layered network that has bottom-up and top-down signal paths. It contains cells of area V1, which respond selectively to edges of a particular orientation, and cells of area V2, which respond selectively to a particular angle of bend. Using the responses of bend-extracting cells, the model predict

High-Performance Microwave-Synthesized Graphene Supercapacitive Synapses for Reservoir Preprocessing in Neuromorphic Computing.

Reservoir computing bridges the gap between artificial intelligence and the physical environment. The realization of such systems depends on artificial synapses that emulate neurobiological plasticity in response to external stimuli. Functioning as reservoirs, these synapses convert the input signals into reservoir states, which are then retrieved by the readout layer. However, energy is merely dissipated during the operation of existing artificial synapses. Herein, we propose an energy-storage-involved reservoir architecture based on graphene-based supercapacitors. Reduced graphene oxide elec

Knowledge-Based Deep Learning for Time-Efficient Inverse Dynamics.

Accurate understanding of muscle activation and muscle forces plays an essential role in neuro-rehabilitation and musculoskeletal disorder treatments. Computational musculoskeletal modeling has been widely used as a powerful non-invasive tool to estimate them through inverse dynamics using static optimization, but the inherent computational complexity results in time-consuming analysis. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based deep learning framework for time-efficient inverse dynamic analysis, which can predict muscle activation and muscle forces from joint kinematic data directly while no

An Innovative Inducer of Platelet Production, Isochlorogenic Acid A, Is Uncovered through the Application of Deep Neural Networks.

(1) Background: Radiation-induced thrombocytopenia (RIT) often occurs in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, which can result in morbidity and even death. However, a notable deficiency exists in the availability of specific drugs designed for the treatment of RIT. (2) Methods: In our pursuit of new drugs for RIT treatment, we employed three deep learning (DL) algorithms: convolutional neural network (CNN), deep neural network (DNN), and a hybrid neural network that combines the computational characteristics of the two. These algorithms construct computational models that can screen c

Fast MRI of bones in the knee - An AI-driven reconstruction approach for adiabatic inversion recovery prepared ultra-short echo time sequences.

PURPOSE: Inversion recovery prepared ultra-short echo time (IR-UTE)-based MRI enables radiation-free visualization of osseous tissue. However, achieving a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio typically requires long acquisition times. We report on a feasibility study, which proposes a data-driven approach to reconstruct undersampled IR-UTE knee data, thereby accelerating MR-based 3D imaging of bones. METHODS: Data were acquired with a 3D radial IR-UTE pulse sequence, implemented using the open-source framework Pulseq. A denoising convolutional neural network (DnCNN) was trained in a supervised fa

Feature-Based Machine-Learning Spike Marking in Signal and Source Space EEG: A Proof-of-Principle Case Study of Focal Epilepsy.

Accurate detection of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in electroencephalography (EEG) plays a crucial role in epilepsy diagnosis. Our work investigates the classification of IEDs using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) trained on EEG data represented in both signal and source space, in a proof-of-principle case study of focal epilepsy. Source waveforms were computed using a standard clinical source analysis procedure for the dipolar IED topographies, an equivalent current dipole model in a three-compartment head volume conductor model fitted using either a 1-parameter fixed-orientati

An Attention-Enhanced ViT-HLNN Hybrid Ensemble Framework for Multi-Class Gastrointestinal Disease Classification.

Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases such as polyps, esophagitis, and ulcerative colitis pose significant diagnostic challenges due to subtle visual patterns. Early, accurate, and scalable diagnostic tools are essential for improving outcomes and streamlining care. In this study, we propose a hybrid deep learning framework for multi-class GI disease classification that integrates a Vision Transformer (ViT) with a Hierarchical Long-Short-Term-Memory Neural Network (HLNN), further enhanced through ensemble learning using Bagging and Stacking. This hybrid architecture captures both global dependencies

Design of a configurable SoC for Alzheimer's disease detection based on multimodal signals.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder that remains difficult to cure. However, early screening and timely intervention can significantly slow its progression. Traditional AD detection methods are plagued by high misdiagnosis rates, low hardware integration, and lack of diagnostic diversity. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a configurable System-on-Chip (SoC) design based on a multimodal fusion Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for high-precision diagnosis. The proposed design integrates Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR

Fractional order modeling of hepatitis C transmission dynamics with physics-informed neural network solutions.

This study develops a fractional-order mathematical model for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) transmission using a six-compartment framework and the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative. The operator’s exponential kernel captures essential short-term memory effects in acute infection and treatment response, a key advancement over classical integer-order models. We establish the model’s well-posedness through rigorous positivity, boundedness, existence-uniqueness, and stability analyses. The basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] confirms epidemic potential, with sensitivity analysis identifying acute tra

A physics-guided neural network framework for prediction and control of spring-mass running.

The spring-mass template acts as a fundamental bridge between animal locomotion and legged robotic platforms. However, controlling spring-mass dynamics involves a persistent trade-off: numerical integration offers accuracy but high computational cost, while approximate analytical solutions provide efficiency but suffer from linearization errors. To resolve this, we propose a physics-guided hybrid neural network framework for the spring-mass running template. Unlike closed-box predictors trained end-to-end, our architecture enforces flight phase physics by embedding exact analytical solutions f
