Selective acoustic phonetic impairment and lexical access in an aphasic patient.

The relationship between acoustic-phonetic disturbances and lexical access was explored in an aphasic patient. M.L. had a restricted disturbance of phonemic discrimination that affected the discrimination of voicing contrasts in nonword stimuli. Despite this impairment, her discrimination of voicing contrasts in words and her comprehension of auditorily presented words containing voiced segments was excellent. Performance on lexical decision was impaired: M.L.'s rejection of nonwords was poor and her reaction times and error rates for word stimuli showed a trend toward being influenced by the

Teaching idiom comprehension to children with mental retardation.

This study examined the effectiveness of a training program designed to teach children with mild mental retardation the meaning of 12 idiomatic phrases, such as "to hit the sack." Four 9-year-old children participated in the training. A multiple baseline design across subjects and across three sets of idioms was implemented. Training consisted of presenting both literal and idiomatic contexts in the form of story narratives, and asking the children to explain the outcome of the story and to select one picture from an array of four that represented the outcome. All children demonstrated learnin

Activation, attention, and visuospatial learning in adults with and without a family history of alcoholism.

While recent evidence shows visuospatial information processing deficits to be present in chronic alcoholics, it remains unclear whether such deficits are present prior to alcohol abuse in persons at risk for developing alcoholism. If present, it is also unclear whether the information processing mechanisms underlying these deficits are the same in alcoholics and persons at risk for alcoholism. This study investigated visuospatial information processing psychophysiological activation in adults with and without a family history of alcoholism. Thirty matched nonalcoholics served as participants.

Relations between Design Copying and other tests of sensory integrative dysfunction: a pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate possible relations between performance on the atypical approach parameters of the Design Copying (DC) subtest of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) (Ayres, 1989) and scores on the Southern California Sensory Integration Tests (SCSIT) (Ayres, 1980). An existing data set was used that consisted of SCSIT and SIPT-DC scores from 32 children identified by their performance on the SCSIT as having sensory integrative dysfunction. Three questions were addressed: (a) Are there relations between scores on the atypical approach parameters of

A computerized visual-search task as a measure of cerebral dysfunction and organization.

This study examined differences in performance on a visual-search task between dysphonetic dyslexic children and three other groups of youngsters (other dyslexic, brain-damaged, and normals) on measures of cerebral dysfunction and cerebral organization. Subjects were required to match a centrally located design to an identical image, yielding a measure of cerebral dysfunction, i.e., latency. Cerebral organization of the diagnostic groups was studied by measuring the conjugate lateral eye movements of each child. Prior research suggests that initial direction of lateral eye movement on a cognit

The merger and development of equivalence classes by unreinforced conditional selection of comparison stimuli.

Three experiments assessed the likelihood that subjects with histories of equivalence class development would respond conditionally on new discriminations in the absence of differential consequences for responses. In the first two experiments, two groups of subjects with different experimental histories, but whose performances showed four equivalence classes, responded on trials without explicit reinforcement involving samples from two of the classes and comparisons from the other two classes, in a two-choice matching-to-sample format. Subjects consistently selected a particular comparison in

Concept discrimination learning by preschool children using facial stimuli differing in age, sex, race, and eyeglasses.

In two experiments, the relative salience of the variables age, sex, race, and eyeglasses was determined with the use of a discrimination learning task and preschool-age Ss. The stimuli for the task were 112 frontal head and shoulder color photographs arranged in pairs. In both experiments, sex discrimination was the easiest to learn, followed by race and age, which did not differ from each other. Each of the variables of sex, age, and race, however, proved to be more salient than glasses which was not learned by any of the 19 Ss who were given a glasses discrimination problem in Experiment 1.

Testing the relationships between facial emotion recognition, levels of Autistic traits, and eye gaze patterns.

Individuals with high levels of Autistic traits often experience challenges in interpreting others' emotions, potentially stemming from atypical patterns of visual attention to facial cues. This study investigates whether levels of Autistic traits in a non-clinical sample are associated with overall emotion recognition accuracy, differential attention to facial areas of interest (eyes, mouth, and other regions), and emotion-specific recognition impairments. Eighty-one participants were presented with videos of actors displaying the six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness,

The picture absurdities test in the evaluation of dementia.

Recognition of picture absurdities was found to be significantly impaired in a group of patients with dementia of Alzheimer type compared to patients with dementia syndrome of depression and cerebrovascular dementia, even when matched for age, education, and dementia severity. None of the other neuropsychological measures investigated, including visual recent memory, Raven's progressive matrices, geographic orientation, and copying of geometric figures, resulted in a similar pattern. Although uncertainty remains as to what the picture absurdities test measures, normal performance likely depend

[Multimodal or multisensorial agnosia?].

A 75 year-old right handed woman had persistent right homonymous hemianopia and alexia without agraphia caused by a haemorrhagic stroke of the left occipito-temporal region. Six months later she suffered sudden onset visual and auditory agnosia, following a second haematoma, contralateral to the first one, in the right occipito-temporal region including the lingual and fusiform gyri. None of the disorders concerned semantic representation, so that an asemantic agnosia was excluded. Her performance in naming and recognition tests, in both visual and auditory modalities, demonstrated a wide rang

Understanding medial temporal activation in memory tasks: evidence from fMRI of encoding and recognition in a case of transient global amnesia.

We used fMRI to examine the activation patterns of patient AE during encoding and recognition of visual scenes during an episode of transient global amnesia (TGA) and 3 months later. Controls (n = 5) showed bilateral (R > L) activation in parahippocampal and fusiform gyri during encoding and right-sided activation in the same regions associated with recognition of previously viewed scenes. AE showed a similar pattern at follow-up. During acute TGA, when performance was profoundly impaired, AE showed no medial temporal activation associated with encoding of new scenes or recognition of old scen

Visual implicit memory deficit and developmental surface dyslexia: a case of early occipital damage.

This study reports the case of EBON, a fifteen-year-old right-handed female Swedish student, who suffered an early medial/dorsal occipital brain lesion and showed a clearly defined pattern of developmental surface dyslexia. EBON and 17 controls were examined with within and cross-modality (visual and auditory) word stem completion tasks together with tasks requiring free-recall and recognition for visually and auditory presented words. Compared to age-matched controls, EBON was found to show a significant deficit of visual priming following visual presentation, and a deficit approaching signif

Multiple-domain dissociation between impaired visual perception and preserved mental imagery in a patient with bilateral extrastriate lesions.

A brain-damaged patient is described whose pattern of performance provides insight into both the functional mechanisms and the neural structures involved in visual mental imagery. The patient became severely agnosic, alexic, achromatopsic and prosopagnosic following bilateral brain lesions in the temporo-occipital cortex. However, her mental imagery for the same visual entities that she could not perceive was perfectly preserved. This clear-cut dissociation held across all the major domains of high-level vision: object recognition, reading, colour and face processing. Our findings, together wi

Single-unit activity during natural vision: diversity, consistency, and spatial sensitivity among AF face patch neurons.

Several visual areas within the STS of the macaque brain respond strongly to faces and other biological stimuli. Determining the principles that govern neural responses in this region has proven challenging, due in part to the inherently complex stimulus domain of dynamic biological stimuli that are not captured by an easily parameterized stimulus set. Here we investigated neural responses in one fMRI-defined face patch in the anterior fundus (AF) of the STS while macaques freely view complex videos rich with natural social content. Longitudinal single-unit recordings allowed for the accumulat

Age-related occipito-temporal hypoactivation during visual search: relationships between mN2pc sources and performance.

Recently, an event-related potential (ERP) study (Lorenzo-López et al., 2008) provided evidence that normal aging significantly delays and attenuates the electrophysiological correlate of the allocation of visuospatial attention (N2pc component) during a feature-detection visual search task. To further explore the effects of normal aging on the N2pc neural sources, neuromagnetic activity during the execution of a visual search task was recorded in healthy young (N=14) and older (N=20) participants by using magnetoencephalography (MEG). The possible relationships between these neural sources an

Effective connectivities of cortical regions for top-down face processing: a dynamic causal modeling study.

To study top-down face processing, the present study used an experimental paradigm in which participants detected non-existent faces in pure noise images. Conventional BOLD signal analysis identified three regions involved in this illusory face detection. These regions included the left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in addition to the right fusiform face area (FFA) and right occipital face area (OFA), both of which were previously known to be involved in both top-down and bottom-up processing of faces. We used Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) and Bayesian model selection to further analyze the data,

Cholinergic enhancement and increased selectivity of perceptual processing during working memory.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the mechanism by which cholinergic enhancement improves working memory. We studied the effect of the cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine on subcomponents of this complex function. Cholinergic enhancement increased the selectivity of neural responses in extrastriate cortices during visual working memory, particularly during encoding. It also increased the participation of ventral extrastriate cortex during memory maintenance and decreased the participation of anterior prefrontal cortex. These results indicate that cholinergic enhan

Impaired regulation of emotional distractors during working memory load in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SZ) patients exhibit deficits in emotion regulation that affect their daily functioning. There is evidence that the prefrontal cortex plays an important role in emotion regulation. However, it remains unclear how this brain region is involved in emotion regulation deficits in SZ, and how such deficits impact performance on cognitively demanding tasks. We examined how happy and fearful emotional distractors impact performance on working memory (WM) tasks of varying difficulty (0-back, 2-back), and brain activity using fMRI. Participants were 20 patients with SZ and 20 healthy con

Activation in the angular gyrus and in the pSTS is modulated by face primes during voice recognition.

The aim of the present study was to better understand the interaction of face and voice processing when identifying people. In a S1-S2 crossmodal priming fMRI experiment, the target (S2) was a disyllabic voice stimulus, whereas the modality of the prime (S1) was manipulated blockwise and consisted of the silent video of a speaking face in the crossmodal condition or of a voice stimulus in the unimodal condition. Primes and targets were from the same speaker (person-congruent) or from two different speakers (person-incongruent). Participants had to classify the S2 as either an old or a young pe

Word and text processing in acquired prosopagnosia.

OBJECTIVE: A novel hypothesis of object recognition asserts that multiple regions are engaged in processing an object type, and that cerebral regions participate in processing multiple types of objects. In particular, for high-level expert processing, it proposes shared rather than dedicated resources for word and face perception, and predicts that prosopagnosic subjects would have minor deficits in visual word processing, and alexic subjects would have subtle impairments in face perception. In this study, we evaluated whether prosopagnosic subjects had deficits in processing either the word c
