[Subcapsular hepatic hematoma in severe postpartum pre-eclampsia. Presentation of a case].

One of the known complications of the patient with preeclamptic or eclamptic disease is the subcapsular hepatic hematoma, caused mainly by the development of disseminated intravascular coagulation. When such hematoma ruptures to the abdominal cavity mortality is high. Nevertheless, there are reports of survival, depending on a prompt and accurate diagnosis and a prompt surgical approach. In this article, a case of a patient with a postpartum severe pre-eclampsia is presented. She was diagnosed as a HELLP syndrome complicated by a disseminated intravascular coagulation and a subcapsular hepatic

[The iodine status in the puerperium and in newborn infants].

In this paper we report about the actual supply of iodine of women in childbred determining iodine levels in serum and milk of the mothers. No significant differences were found between women without, with treated or with untreated goitre. In early childbred and 4 weeks after birth the iodine in milk amounts to about the half of the maternal serum level and does not further increase with continuation of nursing.

Serum cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids during pregnancy and puerperium in normal and pre-eclamptic women.

Serum cholic acid (CA), chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and other biochemical markers of liver diseases were determined during pregnancy and in the puerperium in 19 normal and 16 pre-eclamptic women. In one-third of the cases, either CA or CDCA or both increased to values above the reference limits 6 weeks after delivery.

Postpartum thyrotoxicosis in a patient with Graves' disease. Association with low radioactive iodine uptake.

A patient with previously diagnosed Graves' hyperthyroidism had a transient episode of thyrotoxicosis three months postpartum. This was associated with a diffusely enlarged thyroid gland, a rise in antithyroid microsomal antibody titer, a 24-hour radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) of 1%, and an aspiration biopsy specimen suggestive of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. An alternative cause for the depressed RAIU was not discovered. This case would suggest that patients with previously diagnosed Graves' disease can have thyrotoxicosis without an enhanced RAIU and that the postpartum thyrotoxic synd

Primary aldosteronism aggravated during peripartum period.

Two cases are reported of a 30-year-old and of a 28-year-old Japanese women with primary aldosteronism in whom metabolic and blood pressure abnormalities were aggravated during peripartum period. The characteristic findings in 2 present cases are as follows; 1) lower blood pressure during pregnancy, 2) elevated blood pressure during peripartum period, and 3) after parturition, serum potassium decreased, and the blood pressure elevated. The reason why the hypertension and hypokalemia associated with primary aldosteronism were ameliorated during pregnancy was thought to be due to the increased s

Severe maternal morbidity is associated with increased risk of cerebral palsy in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal morbidity has been linked to maternal mortality and several perinatal complications, but the evidence on associations with children's neurodevelopmental disorders is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between severe maternal morbidity and cerebral palsy in children, overall and by major severe maternal morbidity subtypes. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study of all live births in the province of Ontario, Canada, between 2003 and 2019 followed up through 2020 (n=2,136,816), under a single-payer healthcare system. Severe maternal morbidity (n=41,396
