Production and evaluation of a novel GABA-producing almond yogurt: dietary modulation of stress.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter recognized for its antihypertensive, anxiolytic, neuroprotective, and cognitive-enhancing properties. Functional foods enriched with naturally produced GABA have emerged as promising dietary interventions to modulate the microbiota-gut-brain axis and promote mental well-being. In the current study, a novel GABA-enriched plant-based almond yogurt was developed using the psychobiotic strain Enterococcus faecalis RIT BMS15-3, a human breast milk-derived isolate, as the starter culture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first

mRNA-based seasonal influenza vaccines: an overview of immunogenicity, efficacy, and safety.

Available seasonal influenza vaccines, most of which are still produced in eggs, have several limitations. Messenger RNA (mRNA) technology has emerged as a transformative approach capable of overcoming some of these shortcomings. This overview synthesizes clinical trials evaluating the immunogenicity, efficacy, and safety of standalone and combination mRNA influenza vaccines. Moderna's mRNA-1010 (now approved in the United States) and Pfizer's modified-nucleoside RNA candidate (modRNA) represent the most advanced standalone platforms, while Moderna's combination influenza and COVID-19 vaccine,

From Golden Berry To Golden Nanoprobe: Sustainable Fluorescent Sensing of Torsemide For Doping Control in Athletes.

Doping represents a critical threat to the integrity of competitive sports, with diuretics frequently misused as masking agents to facilitate the urinary excretion of other prohibited substances. Torsemide (TSD), a widely misused loop diuretic, requires a sensitive and selective method for its determination in biological matrices to support efficient doping control. Herein, a sustainable fluorescent nanosensor based on multi-self-doped carbon quantum dots was synthesized for the first time from golden berry (GBQDs) via a rapid, one-step microwave-assisted approach at 800 W in just 7 min withou

Active Packaging, Fruit Volatilome, and the Preservation of Taste and Aroma Quality in Fresh Fruits: A Review.

Fresh fruits are highly perishable products whose acceptance depends not only on external appearance and firmness, but also on the preservation of taste and aroma. This review addresses the relationship between active packaging and the maintenance of fruit sensory quality, with special emphasis on the volatilome as a dynamic marker of aroma integrity. The first part examines how taste and aroma are formed during ripening through the interaction of sugars, organic acids, phenolics, amino acids, and a wide range of volatile compounds, including fatty-acid-derived esters and aldehydes, terpenoids

A pilot experimental study of cold-chain management, haemolysis and oxidative stress of packed red blood cells in early blood transfusion: toward a blood viability model in the out-of-hospital setting.

Injury and violence is a global public health concern, implicated in 4.4 million deaths annually. The most common cause of preventable death is haemorrhage in the out-of-hospital setting. Haemorrhagic shock patients are at risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation, global myocardial ischemia, and death. This risk is heightened among the young, older adults, or polytraumatised. The definitive standard of care is to stop the bleeding and to replace the lost haemoglobin whilst supplementing oxygen. There is paucity in emergency blood transfusion research in the out-of-hospital setting. It is

Controlling beef microbial spoilage with diacetyl-based active packaging sachet.

Meat safety is still at the front line of consumer concern due to the need to control traditional as well as evolving pathogens, such as the ones resistant to antibiotics or preservatives, as well as other food-related stresses. For instance, bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonellaspp. will continue affecting the safety of raw beef, which means that there is a continuous need for advanced antimicrobial solutions, such as active food packaging technologies, which are able to ensure the microbial safety of the packaged beef, while enhancing its shelf life. The main go

Revealing Microstructured Surface Critical Heat Flux Degradation Mechanisms and Synergistic Pool Boiling Enhancement in Fluorinated Fluids.

Fluorinated dielectric fluids are widely utilized as heat transfer fluids for two-phase cooling of electronics, capitalizing on the fluids' large latent heat release during boiling for efficient heat flux removal. Recent studies have optimized surface micro/nanostructures on aluminum alloy through chemical etching, achieving more than 2× enhancements in boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of these fluids compared to plain surfaces. However, these microengineered surfaces suffer from critical heat flux (CHF) reduction of nearly 40%, with the mechanisms driving this CHF reduction remaining

Listeria monocytogenes growth under well-controlled CO2, pH, and temperature conditions through a novel gas-controlling system.

While effectively extending the shelf life of perishable foods at low temperatures by delaying the growth of spoilage microorganisms, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) may favor the growth of certain pathogens under refrigerated and anaerobic environments. In particular, Listeria monocytogenes poses a major safety concern and has caused a significant increase in foodborne outbreaks over the last five years in EU. Although this pathogen has received great attention in the field of predictive microbiology, the exact relations between its growth and interconnected stress factors (CO2, pH, and t

Diffusion-controlled release of chemical preservative from chitosan-date seed biocomposites for sustainable antimicrobial poultry meat packaging: A techno-functional valorization of agro-waste.

This study proposes a sustainable active packaging system based on a chitosan-glycerol-date seed powder-sodium benzoate (CHS/DSP/NaBz) composite film designed to enhance meat preservation through controlled antioxidant and antimicrobial release. The optimized formulation (1 % chitosan, 20 % glycerol, 15 % DSP, 5 % NaBz), prepared via solvent casting, produced a homogeneous, flexible matrix, as confirmed by FTIR, SEM, and XRD, which revealed complementary hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions that reduced crystallinity (∼53 % to ∼42 %) and improved structural cohesion. These interactions mark

Serious hazards of transfusion: evaluating the dangers of a wrong patient autologous salvaged blood in cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: The past half century has seen the near eradication of transfusion-associated hazards. Intraoperative cell salvage while widely used still poses significant risks and hazards due to human error. We report on a case in which blood collected from a patient with lung cancer was mistakenly administered to a patient undergoing cardiac surgery who should have received his own collected blood. The initial investigation found that the cause of the patient harm was violations of procedures by hospital personnel. A detailed investigation revealed that not only violations were the cause, but

Off-the-shelf, heparinized small diameter vascular graft limits acute thrombogenicity in a porcine model.

Thrombogenicity poses a challenge to the clinical translation of engineered grafts. Previously, small-diameter vascular grafts (sdVG) composed of fibrin hydrogel microfiber tubes (FMT) with an external poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) sheath supported long-term patency in mice. Towards the development of an sdVG with off-the-shelf availability, the FMT's shelf stability, scale-up, and successful conjugation of an antithrombotic drug to the fibrin scaffold are reported here. FMTs maintain mechanical stability and high-water retention after storage for one year in a freezer, in a refrigerator, or at r

Listeria monocytogenes Biofilm Adaptation to Different Temperatures Seen Through Shotgun Proteomics.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause invasive severe human illness (listeriosis) in susceptible patients. Most human listeriosis cases appear to be caused by consumption of refrigerated ready-to-eat foods. Although initial contamination levels in foods are usually low, the ability of these bacteria to survive and multiply at low temperatures allows it to reach levels high enough to cause disease. This study explores the set of proteins that might have an association with L. monocytogenes adaptation to different temperatures. Cultures were grown in biofilm, the most wid

Decalcified allograft in repair of lytic lesions of bone: A study to evolve bone bank in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: The quest for ideal bone graft substitutes still haunts orthopedic researchers. The impetus for this search of newer bone substitutes is provided by mismatch between the demand and supply of autogenous bone grafts. Bone banking facilities such as deep frozen and freeze-dried allografts are not so widely available in most of the developing countries. To overcome the problem, we have used partially decalcified, ethanol preserved, and domestic refrigerator stored allografts which are economical and needs simple technology for procurement, preparation, and preservation. The aim of the

Making vaccines more acceptable--methods to prevent and minimize pain and other common adverse events associated with vaccines.

The growing abundance of highly immunogenic vaccines has arrived with a burden of pain, distress, and common adverse reactions that in turn may interfere with parental compliance and aggravate anti-vaccine sentiment. In a study of 150 children in each of 2 age-groups, we found that approximately 20% of the subjects suffered serious distress or worse. During the procedural phase, approximately 90% of the 15-to-18 month old children and 45% of the 4-to-6 year old children showed serious distress or worse. To address non-adherence with pediatric vaccine schedules, we must consider all of the poss

THE ETIOLOGY OF VERRUGA PERUANA.

A saline suspension of a subcutaneous nodule excised from a verruga patient, and kept in the refrigerator for 14 days, on inoculation into two young Macacus rhesus monkeys (Nos. 33 and 34) induced irregular febrile reactions and enlargement of the lymph glands, and in one instance a subcutaneous nodule arose, independently of direct inoculation, on the tail. A microorganism has been isolated from the blood of both animals, and from the experimental nodule, which in pathogenic properties and in cultural and morphological characteristics is indistinguishable from the strain of Bartonella bacilli
