To Cut (Minimally Invasively) Is to Cure: Robotic Lobectomy for Pulmonary Mucormycosis.

Pulmonary mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and highly morbid disease commonly found in immunosuppressed patients. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are essential, with thoracotomy and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery techniques previously described for surgical resection of infected lobes. Here we present the case of a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and nonresolving Mucor pneumonia treated with robotic left upper lobectomy. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and significant clinical improvement, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of the robotic approach in treating

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy - our first experience.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive esophagectomy is associated with lower postoperative morbidity and better quality of life compared to open esophagectomy in patients with comparable oncological outcomes. Robotic-assisted surgery represents the next step in the development of mini- mally invasive surgery. We aim to present the results of a pilot cohort of patients undergoing robotic-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE). METHODS: An initial cohort of patients with RAMIE was retrospectively analyzed. Operative characteristics, histopathological results, postoperative course, inciden

Robotic pancreas-preserving total duodenectomy: first-world experience.

Pancreas sparing total duodenectomy (PSTD) is an exceedingly rare procedure that is performed mostly for benign disease, widely involving the duodenum, that cannot be treated otherwise. PSTD requires meticulous dissection as well as reconstruction of both biliary and pancreatic drainage. Despite these technical aspects appear to be ideal for robotic assistance, robotic PSTD has not been described yet.Robotic PSTD was successfully performed in two patients. In both patients biliary and pancreatic drainage were reconstructed on the second jejunal loop, which was pulled in the duodenal bed. In th

Spatiotemporal Compliance Control for a Wearable Lower Limb Rehabilitation Robot.

Compliance control is crucial for physical human-robot interaction, which can enhance the safety and comfort of robot-assisted rehabilitation. In this study, we designed a spatiotemporal compliance control strategy for a new self-designed wearable lower limb rehabilitation robot (WLLRR), allowing the users to regulate the spatiotemporal characteristics of their motion. The high-level trajectory planner consists of a trajectory generator, an interaction torque estimator, and a gait speed adaptive regulator, which can provide spatial and temporal compliance for the WLLRR. A radial basis function

Robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy: Technique & brief literature review.

The worldwide growth of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery has been exponential since its FDA approval for use in gynecologic surgery in the spring of 2005. This growth has spanned the entire gamut of gynecologic procedures and pathology. One area that has leveraged the unique aspects of robotics has been its application to the conservative surgical management of uterine fibroids. This manuscript will review the surgical technique and highlight the current situation regarding the scientific literature with an evidence-based focus on the role of robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy (RALM) wi…

Short-term outcomes of robotic-assisted transthoracic diaphragmatic plication.

BACKGROUND: Patients who are symptomatic from diaphragmatic dysfunction may benefit from diaphragmatic plication. We recently modified our plication approach from open thoracotomy to robotic transthoracic. We report our short-term outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a single-institution retrospective review of all patients who underwent transthoracic plications from 2018, when we began using the robotic approach, to 2022. The primary outcome was short-term recurrence of diaphragm elevation with symptoms noted before or during the first planned postoperative visit. We also compared proportions of

Robotic-assisted colectomy in children: a comparative study with laparoscopic surgery.

The aim of this study was to compare outcomes of laparoscopic and robotic-assisted colectomy in children. All children who underwent a colectomy with a laparoscopic (LapC) or robotic-assisted (RobC) approach in our institution (January 2010-March 2023) were included. Demographics, surgical data, and post-operative outcomes within 30 days were collected. Additional cost related to the robotic approach was calculated. Comparisons were performed using Fisher tests for categorical variables and Mann-Whitney tests for continuous variables. A total of 55 colectomies were performed: 31 LapC and 24 Ro

Biportal robotic pulmonary lobectomy, initial experience - case report.

INTRODUCTION: Thanks to perfect visualization and high maneuverability of instruments, the robotic technique is a preferable type of lung resection, even though the number of required incisions is usually higher compared to the video-assisted approach. This case report presents our initial experience with the reduced-port approach in performing robotic biportal lobectomy. CASE REPORT: The 72-years-old female, examined for hemoptysis, was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor of the left lower lobe bronchus based on bronchoscopy. The patient underwent a biportal fully robotic left lower lobectomy.

Design and Validation of a Soft Robotic Simulator for Transseptal Puncture Training.

OBJECTIVE: Transseptal puncture (TP) is the technique used to access the left atrium of the heart from the right atrium during cardiac catheterization procedures. Through repetition, electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists experienced in TP develop manual skills to navigate the transseptal catheter assembly to their target on the fossa ovalis (FO). Cardiology fellows and cardiologists that are new to TP currently train on patients to develop this skill, resulting in increased risk of complications. The goal of this work was to create low-risk training opportunities for new TP ope

A comparison of the psychological effects of robot motion in physical and virtual environments.

A mixed-methods approach was used to assess the fidelity of virtual environments as ergonomic assessment tools for human-robot interaction. Participants performed a visual search task in the physical environment while a nearby collaborative robot repeatedly extended its arm toward them. This scenario was reconstructed in two virtual environments with different levels of graphical detail. Measures of presence, task performance, workload, and anxiety were taken to determine the effect of robot motion in all three environments. Task performance decreased in response to robot motion in the physica

Ultraviolet disinfection (UV-D) robots: bridging the gaps in dentistry.

Maintaining a microbe-free environment in healthcare facilities has become increasingly crucial for minimizing virus transmission, especially in the wake of recent epidemics like COVID-19. To meet the urgent need for ongoing sterilization, autonomous ultraviolet disinfection (UV-D) robots have emerged as vital tools. These robots are gaining popularity due to their automated nature, cost advantages, and ability to instantly disinfect rooms and workspaces without relying on human labor. Integrating disinfection robots into medical facilities reduces infection risk, lowers conventional cleaning

Robot-Assisted Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery for Congenital Cholesteatoma.

Congenital cholesteatoma accounts for 25% of cholesteatoma cases in children. Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery (TEES) is ideal for these patients because it offers a wide endoscopic view of the middle ear and a minimally invasive approach. The two main limitations are the loss of one operative hand and a narrow external auditory canal in younger children. Here, we present the case of a 3-year-old patient with a Potsic stage III congenital cholesteatoma adherent to the incus and branches of the stapes. A robotic-assisted TEES procedure was performed, during which a robotic arm with 6 degrees o

Longitudinal urgency outcomes following robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy.

PURPOSE: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a well-known adverse outcome following robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Although postoperative SUI has been extensively studied, little focus has been placed on understanding the natural history and impact of urgency symptoms following RALP. The UVA prostatectomy functional outcomes program (PFOP) was developed to comprehensively assess and optimize continence outcomes following RALP. The present study focuses on assessing urgency outcomes in this cohort. METHODS: PFOP patients with a minimum of 6-months follow up following RALP
