Development and validation of the Self-Awareness of Ego-Threatening Biases Questionnaire (SAETBQ).

Awareness of social biases is crucial as they impact both individual behavior and societal outcomes. Whereas previous research indicates that self-awareness of ego-nonthreatening biases enhances self-regulation, the effects of self-awareness of ego-threatening biases remain underexplored. Preliminary findings suggest that awareness of ego-threatening biases related to rumination may lead to maladaptive states. However, these findings await replication with standardized instruments. To address this gap, we conducted two studies. In Study 1 (N = 1609), we developed and validated the 12-item Self

Exercise prior to cognitive behavior therapy sessions for depression: a feasibility pilot study.

Exercise directly improves mood and cognition. Providing exercise immediately before cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) sessions may therefore enhance the clinical responsiveness to CBT. The present pilot study examined the feasibility and direction of effect of exercise+CBT versus CBT in depressed outpatients using a stepped wedged design. Thirty-three patients received either group-based CBT (12-16 weeks) or group-based exercise+CBT within specialized mental healthcare settings. Weekly therapist-supervised exercise sessions (45 min, moderate intensity, running/indoor cycling) were provided dir

The 'L-factor': Language as a transdiagnostic dimension in psychopathology.

Thoughts and moods constituting our mental life incessantly change. When the steady flow of this dynamics diverges in clinical directions, the possible pathways involved are captured through discrete diagnostic labels. Yet a single vulnerable neurocognitive system may be causally involved in psychopathological deviations transdiagnostically. We argue that language viewed as integrating cortical functions is the best current candidate, whose forms of breakdown along its different dimensions are then manifest as symptoms - from prosodic abnormalities and rumination in depression to distortions o

How to recognize and treat rumination syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rumination syndrome (RS) is a functional gastroduodenal disorder characterized by repeated effortless regurgitation or vomiting of recently ingested food without retching. RS generally has been considered a rare entity. However, it has been increasingly recognized that many RS patients are likely to be underdiagnosed. This review discusses how to recognize and manage RS patients in clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent epidemiological study that included over 50,000 individuals found that the prevalence of RS around the world is 3.1%. In patients with proton pump inh

Relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and coronary heart disease: an empirical examination of heart rate variability and coronary stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite longstanding interest in emotion regulation and cardiovascular health, limited studies have investigated the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies and coronary heart disease (CHD) using objective measures of heart rate variability (HRV) and coronary stenosis. This study aimed to objectively explore the associations between CER strategies and both HRV and coronary stenosis and provide empirical evidence for the relationship between emotion regulation and CHD. METHODS: Questionnaires on CER strategies were distributed to 251 CHD patients and 250 h

Metacognitive Beliefs and Their Relation with Symptoms in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Metacognitive constructs have shown promise in explaining the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Few studies have examined the role of metacognitions in symptom dimensions of OCD, despite mounting clinical, neuropsychological and imaging evidence for the distinctiveness of these dimensions. METHODS: Metacognitions were assessed using the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) in 51 participants with DSM IV OCD and 46 healthy controls. The Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) was used to quantify symptom dimensions, along with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating

Facebook language predicts depression in medical records.

Depression, the most prevalent mental illness, is underdiagnosed and undertreated, highlighting the need to extend the scope of current screening methods. Here, we use language from Facebook posts of consenting individuals to predict depression recorded in electronic medical records. We accessed the history of Facebook statuses posted by 683 patients visiting a large urban academic emergency department, 114 of whom had a diagnosis of depression in their medical records. Using only the language preceding their first documentation of a diagnosis of depression, we could identify depressed patient

Profile of depression, experienced distress and capacity for coping with stress in multiple sclerosis patients--a different perspective.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can result in significant changes in psychological functioning. Depression and cognitive deficits are commonly present. In addition personality changes have been described. A growing body of research is showing negative impact of psychological stress on disease course. Our study focused on the profile of depression, capacity for coping with stress and experienced distress in patients with MS measured by a performance based method for personality assessment-the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM). We included 95 patients with MS and 44 healthy controls. RIM was used with all

Symptoms of anxiety and depression in childhood absence epilepsy.

Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) has been recently linked to a number of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional disorders. Identification of affective disorders (anxiety and depression) presents unique challenges in pediatric populations, and successful early intervention may significantly improve long-term developmental outcomes. The current study examined the specific anxiety and depression symptoms children with CAE experience, and explored the role of disease factors in the severity of their presentation. Forty-five subjects with CAE and 41 healthy matched controls, ages 6-16 years, particip

Medical errors: Disclosure styles, interpersonal forgiveness, and outcomes.

RATIONALE: This study investigates the intrapersonal and interpersonal factors and processes that are associated with patient forgiveness of a provider in the aftermath of a harmful medical error. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine what antecedents are most predictive of patient forgiveness and non-forgiveness, and the extent to which social-cognitive factors (i.e., fault attributions, empathy, rumination) influence the forgiveness process. Furthermore, the study evaluates the role of different disclosure styles in two different forgiveness models, and measures their respective causal outc

The role of affective control in emotion regulation during adolescence.

In this review, we evaluate evidence for the hypothesis that developmental changes in emotion regulation tendencies during adolescence depend on the maturation of affective control. Affective control refers to the application of cognitive control to affective contexts, that is, the capacity to attend and respond to goal-relevant affective information, while inhibiting attention and responses toward distracting affective information. The evidence suggests that affective control develops throughout adolescence into adulthood. However, the developmental trajectory appears not to be uniform across

Affective Working Memory: An Integrative Psychological Construct.

When people ruminate about an unfortunate encounter with a loved one, savor a long-sought accomplishment, or hold in mind feelings from a marvelous or regretfully tragic moment, what mental processes orchestrate these psychological phenomena? Such experiences typify how affect interacts with working memory, which we posit can occur in three primary ways: emotional experiences can modulate working memory, working memory can modulate emotional experiences, and feelings can be the mental representations maintained by working memory. We propose that this last mode constitutes distinct neuropsychol

Pubertal Maturation and Trajectories of Depression During Early Adolescence.

Beginning at puberty, prevalence of depression in females rises dramatically. The physical changes of puberty coincide with a period of social flux, during which relationships become less stable and more prone to conflict. While this social upheaval is normatively distressing for girls, it may be especially so for girls with cognitive styles that leave them more susceptible to depression. The present study investigated depressive symptoms at two time points during early pubertal maturation. N = 110 girls (M age = 11.57, SD = 0.98) reported on depressive symptomology, pubertal maturation, rumin

The magic of magic: The effect of magic tricks on subsequent engagement with lecture material.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lecturers often present entertaining videos, or organize a variety of amusing demonstrations, to foster student engagement or to encourage critical analysis. Magic tricks, in particular, have been shown to activate neural circuits that underpin motivation or problem-solving and, therefore, could be beneficial during lectures. Nevertheless, we hypothesize that, unless the method that underpins these tricks is revealed, students may ruminate over possible explanations, distracting attention from the lecture material. SAMPLE AND METHODS: To test these arguments, in this stud

An Examination of Intolerance of Uncertainty in Schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is associated with multiple comorbidities and symptoms, suggestive of common transdiagnostic processes. Elevated intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is one such transdiagnostic process, but little research has been conducted on IU in schizophrenia. METHODS: This study assessed the associations between IU, schizophrenia diagnosis and schizophrenia symptoms using a between-group cross-sectional design. The sample comprised 113 participants, 72 people with a schizophrenia diagnosis and 41 control participants without (73 male, 40 female, age range 19-69 [M = 42.1, SD = 13

Body dissatisfaction, ruminative thinking, food and alcohol disturbance, and alcohol use outcomes among college students.

Research shows that body dissatisfaction can contribute to risky alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences among college students. The present study examined if rumination and engagement in food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; i.e., disordered eating behaviors used to compensate for alcohol-related calories [FAD-calories] or enhance alcohol's effects [FAD-intoxication]) are potential mechanisms indirectly linking body dissatisfaction to alcohol use and related consequences in college students. Specifically, we tested whether higher body dissatisfaction relates to greater alcohol use/

tDCS efficacy and utility of anhedonia and rumination as clinical predictors of response to tDCS in major depressive disorder (MDD).

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia and rumination are mental disorders' transdiagnostic features but remain difficult to treat. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a proven treatment for depression, but its effects on anhedonia and rumination and whether anhedonia and rumination can be used as a predictive biomarker of treatment response is not well known. This study aimed to investigate the tDCS efficacy and identify the predictive role of anhedonia and rumination in response to tDCS in patients with MDD. METHODS: 182 patients received 10 tDCS sessions delivered at 2 mA to left (anode) dors

Stress appraisal and emotion regulation mediate the association between mindfulness and affect in cancer patients: Differential mechanisms for positive and negative affect.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer patients are at an increased risk for affective problems, including feelings of anxiety and depression. Mindfulness has been linked to an array of benefits for affective functioning in various populations including cancer patients, but the mechanisms underlying this relationship are still poorly understood. Based on emotion-regulation and stress-coping models, this study examined the potential mediating role of stress appraisal and coping strategies in the associations between mindfulness and cancer patients' positive and negative affect. METHODS: For this cross-sectional st

Rumination and Sleep Quality Among Older Adults: Examining the Role of Social Support.

OBJECTIVES: Although the adverse link between rumination and sleep quality is well established, much of the literature neglects the role of social factors. This study examined the role of older adults' perceived social support from spouses and from family/friends in modifying the association between trait rumination and sleep quality. Existing hypotheses suggest that social support may play 3 unique roles, each tested within the current study: (H1) support may act as a protective factor that buffers negative effects of rumination on sleep quality, (H2) support may curtail rumination and, in tu
