Musculoskeletal Pain and Satisfaction with an Injury-Prevention Workshop Among Young String and Wind Musicians: An Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: Musculoskeletal injuries are highly prevalent among musicians, with the neck and shoulders being the most frequently reported areas of pain. Preventive education should be included to help understand and avoid health risks associated with musical performance. The objective is to assess the level of satisfaction with a workshop on injury prevention among string and wind musicians, and to determine the prevalence and location of their musculoskeletal pain. Methods: This was an observational study consisting of the administration of a questionnaire following a workshop on m

Treatment of Combined Injuries of the Axillary and Suprascapular Nerves with Scapulothoracic Dissociation.

A 20-year-old man suffered the combined axillary and suprascapular nerve palsies associated with scapulothoracic dissociation by motorcycle accident. The dislocated shoulder girdle was reduced and stabilized with osteosynthesis of the fractured clavicle and reattachment of the trapezius avulsed from the scapular spine for removal of continuous traction force to these damaged nerves. Because of no evidence of recovery on manual muscle test and electromyogram, exploration for these nerves was administered 6 weeks after injury. Although neurolysis of both nerves revealed neural continuity, excess

Rotator cuff surgery in persons with spinal cord injury: relevance of a multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: This article is a prospective review of patients with spinal cord injury who underwent multidisciplinary consultation from January 2005 to September 2013 for pain in one or both shoulders. METHODS: We performed clinical, functional, and lesion evaluations of 38 patients with paraplegia and quadriplegia presenting with rotator cuff pathologies. RESULTS: Surgery was indicated and performed on 38 shoulders in 28 patients. The lesion assessment during surgery showed injuries that were more severe than one would have thought based on imaging data. The mean pain intensity rating in the

Bone marrow edema in the greater tuberosity of the humerus at MR imaging: association with rotator cuff tears and traumatic injury.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bone marrow edema in the greater tuberosity of the humerus on MR imaging, the association with other findings at MR imaging and the injury mechanism which can lead to this finding. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: MR reports from 863 patients referred for shoulder MRI over 74 months were reviewed to identify patients with marrow edema in the greater tuberosity. The MR images from patients with greater tuberosity marrow edema were reviewed by consensus of two radiologists for the extent of marrow edema and for associated injuries. M

A severely displaced metaphyseal fracture of the proximal humerus with dislocation of the shoulder in a child.

Fracture of the proximal humerus metaphysis with coexistent dislocation of the shoulder in children is a rare injury. The injury often occurs as a consequence of high velocity trauma. Most fractures of the proximal humerus commonly associated with the epiphysis in children can be treated with closed reduction. We presented a case of 5-year-old girl who sustained this type of fracture- dislocation of the shoulder. Open reduction and internal fixation with multiple smooth K-wires was performed. At two years follow-up, the patient was pain free and regained full range of motion.

Scapulothoracic joint function and its association with throwing-related injuries in collegiate baseball pitchers: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries are common among collegiate baseball pitchers; however, prospective evidence on scapulothoracic (ST) joint function as a risk factor is limited. This study prospectively investigated whether ST joint stability was associated with throwing-related injuries. METHODS: Twenty-seven collegiate pitchers were prospectively categorized into injury and noninjury groups during the 12-month follow-up. Scapular and trunk positional coordinates were recorded using a 3D scanner during preseason screening under 2 conditions: (1) 90° scapularplane abdu

The Interfascial Plane Block: An Adjunctive Ultrasound-Guided Block for Proximal Humerus Fracture and Fracture Dislocation Anesthesia and Analgesia in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) and fracture-dislocations (PHFDs) are frequently encountered in the emergency department (ED). Adequate pain control for these injuries can be challenging, and traditional methods, including opioid analgesics and other blocks may pose significant risks such as medication side-effects and hemidiaphragmatic paresis. The interfascial plane block (IPB) is an emerging, ultrasound-guided technique that targets the fascial plane between the deltoid and subscapularis muscles, potentially offering safer and more focused analgesia for acute shoulder injuries…

[Value of ultrasound of the support and locomotor system--with special reference to radiation exposure and cost reduction].

In recent years, ultrasonic assessment of the locomotory system has become established both as a screening method in patients with chronic disorders and for evaluating acute injuries. Thanks to technical improvements to the equipment (use of high-frequency probes up to 20 MHz), ever smaller structures can be visualized. Ultrasonography can be carried out immediately following the clinical- and possibly radiological-assessment, by one and the same investigator, and requires little extra time. A bilateral examination in particular permits good evaluation of the extent of an injury and, with appr

Anterior dislocation of the shoulder with ipsilateral humerus shaft fracture.

Anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint with ipsilateral humerus shaft fracture is a very rare injury. Until July 2006 only 18 cases have been reported in the literature. Here we report a case of Anterior Shoulder dislocation with greater tuberosity and shaft of humerus fracture. The patient was treated by Open reduction and internal fixation of the shaft fracture followed by closed reduction of the dislocation. A post-operative rehabilitation program was instituted for complete rehabilitation of the shoulder function.

Fetal macrosomia. ACOG Technical Bulletin Number 159--September 1991.

When macrosomia exists, shoulder dystocia is a primary obstetric concern. Current methods for estimating birth weight prior to delivery are imprecise, and macrosomia often cannot be predicted. Certain conditions or combinations of conditions should increase the index of suspicion for shoulder dystocia. When these conditions are identified, consideration should be given to the management of potential shoulder dystocia. Despite due care and appropriate clinical judgment, however, injury during the birth process cannot always be prevented.

[Clavicle Fractures: Diagnosis and Choice of the Appropriate Therapeutic Procedure].

Clavicle fractures are one of the most common injuries of the shoulder girdle. In addition to the targeted clinical examination, the appropriate imaging must be initiated to formulate the correct diagnosis and subsequently apply an appropriate therapeutic method. Indirect force impact in recreational and sports accidents, such as falling on the outstretched or adducted arm, is the most common accident mechanism. The prevalence shows a bipartite clustering. On the one hand, there are young male patients and, on the other hand, female patients from the age of 65. Thus, a heterogeneous patient po

Evaluation and Management of Scapular Dyskinesis in Overhead Athletes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will outline scapular function in throwing, discuss scapular dyskinesis as an impairment of function that can be associated with throwing injuries and altered performance, and present an algorithm that encompasses guidelines for evaluation and can serve as a basis for treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Optimal scapular function is integral to optimal shoulder function. Multiple roles of the scapula in arm function and throwing have been identified while scapular dysfunction continues to be associated with various shoulder pathologies. Although scapular motion alteratio

Nerve reconstruction in patients with obstetric brachial plexus injury results in worsening of glenohumeral deformity: a case-control study of 75 patients.

Whereas a general trend in the management of obstetric brachial plexus injuries has been nerve reconstruction in patients without spontaneous recovery of biceps function by three to six months of age, many recent studies suggest this may be unnecessary. In this study, the severity of glenohumeral dysplasia and shoulder function and strength in two groups of matched patients with a C5-6 lesion at a mean age of seven years (2.7 to 13.3) were investigated. One group (23 patients) underwent nerve reconstruction and secondary operations, and the other (52 patients) underwent only secondary operatio

Arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair.

Rotator cuff injuries or disease can be particularly troubling to patients by causing them pain, weakness, and dysfunction of the shoulder. Surgery of the shoulder and, in particular, of the rotator cuff, has evolved over the years from open surgery to include arthroscopic treatment for many conditions. Although technically demanding, arthroscopic repair of full- and partial-thickness rotator cuff tears has been shown to produce satisfactory results. Along with the advantages of the arthroscopic technique, smaller skin incisions, access to the glenohumeral joint for inspection and treatment of

Brachial plexus injuries from blunt trauma--a harbinger of vascular and thoracic injury.

We reviewed the records of 59 patients who suffered brachial plexus injuries following blunt trauma between the years 1974 and 1984. The age of the patients ranged from 2 to 84 years, with a mean of 35.3 years. Forty-five were male patients. The majority of injuries (53%) were caused by motor vehicle accidents. Direct trauma was the mechanism of injury for 33 patients, traction for 18, shoulder dislocation for six, and acromioclavicular separation for two. The injuries occurred on the left side in 33 (56%); the right side in 23 (39%), and bilaterally in three (5%). Eight patients (14%) suffere

Comminuted Bilateral Simultaneous Fracture and Luxation of the Proximal Humerus with an Injury to the Right Axillary Artery.

INTRODUCTION: Among all of the shoulder dislocation cases, only 1% is related to fractures. The simultaneous bilateral fracture and dislocation happen very rarely and it is seldom related to a trauma. An injury to the axillary artery related to a humerus fracture is an exceptional event. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old male with no particular background who, after falling from a 5 m height, presented a fracture and dislocation of both of his shoulders and showed no pulse in his right arm due to an injury to his axillary artery. The peculiarity of this injury increases when the axillary artery inju

Primary replacement of the humeral head in iatrogenically displaced fracture-dislocations of the shoulder: a report about six cases.

Dislocation of the shoulder is a common injury and may be associated with a variety of complications. We report six cases of primary replacement of the humeral head where closed reduction of a shoulder dislocation associated with an undisplaced fracture of the humeral neck led to displacement of the neck fracture. All dislocations examined were anterior with a displaced greater tubercle fracture. The patients had undergone closed reduction at other medical centres and were referred to us because of iatrogenically displaced fracture-dislocations of the shoulder. Three were women and three were
