BACKGROUND: While the default-mode network (DMN) appears to play a crucial role in patients suffering from somatization disorder (SD), the abnormalities of the network homogeneity (NH) of the DMN in SD patients have been poorly explored. The aim of this study is to examine DMN NH using an NH approach in patients suffering from SD at rest and determine its correlations with personality as measured by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ).
METHODS: A total of 25 drug-naive patients with SD and 28 sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance im

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is often associated with later psychopathology, including depression, somatization, and alexithymia. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships of CT with somatization and alexithymia. Moreover, the effect of specific subtypes of trauma on alexithymia and somatization was also investigated.
METHODS: The present study was conducted on 100 outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 50 age and gender matched healthy controls (HC). Data were collected on each of the participants, including the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-2

Elevated psychological distress during HIV infection has been consistently correlated with negative HIV-related health outcomes in studies conducted in various regions of the world. This study was conducted to compare the nature and range of psychological distress among HIV-infected individuals who had sought mental health care as part of their HIV care in Kenya and the United States. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was completed by 234 individuals with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and 284 in Eldoret, Kenya. The US-based sample expressed markedly higher levels of psychological distress symp

OBJECTIVE: There is converging evidence indicating a close association between trauma, particularly childhood trauma, and adult somatization, but studies using both structured interviews and self-report measures to assess childhood adversities in patients with somatization disorder are scarce.
METHODS: A total of 28 patients (82% women, mean age=41.7+/-10.1 years) meeting DSM-IV criteria for somatization disorder as confirmed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Axis I (SCID-I) underwent the Structured Trauma Interview (STI) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). AIM: The comparison of the relations between personality changes and main symptom changes observed during complex integrative psychotherapy in 100 somatization patients and 100 anxiety disorder patients.
METHOD: Two self-descriptive measures--the 16PF of R.B. Cattell and the Symptom Checklist "O" were used in the study. The second measure chosen for the study was a 14-scale screen for the presence of functional disorder symptoms and 5 scales referring to phobias, general anxiety, somatization and conversions. Questionnaires were fulfilled twice--before and after psychotherapy.

Hypochondriasis is a heterogeneous disorder. This was well demonstrated in the study by Kellner et al, which showed that patients with high levels of disease fear tended to be more anxious or phobic, whereas patients with high levels of disease conviction tended to have more and more severe somatic symptoms. Little comorbidity exists to support the statement that hypochondriasis is an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder. Although patients exist whose hypochondriac concerns are identical in quality to the intrusive thoughts of patients with OCD, as a group, patients with hypochondriasis do n

Patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) have an obsessive preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance or, if a slight physical abnormality exists, a grossly excessive concern with it. This preoccupation causes significant distress or impairment of social, occupational, or other functioning. Social anxiety is a prominent component of BDD, and social avoidance resulting from BDD symptoms may markedly impair social functioning. In severe cases, avoidance of social situations in combination with occupational and academic impairment may result in patients becoming housebound. The preva

Recent studies have highlighted physiological effects of emotional stress presumably leading to gastrointestinal disease. This study examined the effects of stress (hostility) and coping (social support and negative responses to stress) on asymptomatic gastric diseases. We investigated whether gastrofiberscopic findings were related to stress and coping in 269 volunteers without gastrointestinal complaints. These subjects were taking part in primary health care assessments. Analysis of variance found that volunteers with abnormal gastrofibercopic findings (i.e., erosions and/or ulceration) dem

Somatization disorder is thought to be rare or nonexistent in men. We examined this hypothesis by assessing gender differences in DSM-III-R diagnostic status, demographic and clinical characteristics, functional limitations, self-reported health status, and psychiatric comorbidity in 30 men and 117 women who were referred for multiple unexplained somatic complaints. Twelve men and 68 women met DSM-III-R criteria for somatization disorder. Among those meeting criteria, there were few differences on any of the dimensions that were assessed. Different referral sources for women and men suggested

The purpose of this article is to advance a different approach to the phenomenology of the "lived-body." To understand the role of the body in generating culture, traditional constraints influencing bodily perceptions are considered. The alternative is found in the phenomenological method of bodily perceptions. Numerous examples from traditional Chinese medicine, based on research in China, illustrate a wealth of symptoms, sensations, and their relation to the world of emotions. These examples provide arguments for collapsing the strict distinction between somatic changes and emotions as based

Parental welfare status was found to be a marker for identifying a group of children with an increased prevalence of psychiatric disorder and poor school performance. The marker was particularly strong for psychiatric disorder in young boys and for poor school performance in young girls. For instance, the prevalence rates of psychiatric disorder, in the 6 to 11 age group, for welfare and non-welfare boys, were 40.0% and 13.9%, respectively; and for poor school performance in welfare and non-welfare girls, 27.8% and 6.1%, respectively. The relationship between different measures of psychosocial

INTRODUCTION: Despite large numbers of traumatized refugees, little is known about effective treatment of war trauma in refugees and immigrants. Few studies evaluating treatment have been published and most studies are follow-up studies with methodological limitations and little comparability across studies.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the PhD is to characterize transcultural trauma patients in Denmark needing psychiatric treatment with regards to psychopathology and predictors of mental health and to evaluate the effects of the treatment.
METHODS: Two studies reported in 4 papers form the basis

OBJECTIVE: To avert the public health consequences of anxiety disorders, prevention of their onset and recurrence is necessary. Recent studies have shown that prevention is effective. To maximize the health gain and minimize the effort, preventive strategies should focus on high-risk groups.
METHOD: Using data from a large prospective national survey, high-risk groups were selected for i) the prevention of first ever (n = 4437) and ii) either first-ever or recurrent incident anxiety disorders (n = 4886). Indices used were: exposure rate, odds ratio, population attributable fraction and number

BACKGROUND: Myelopathies of unknown origin (MUO) constitute a challenge for the clinician, due to the absence of image findings that explain the symptoms of the patients. The role of spinal angiography (SA) in MUO has not been studied before in the medical literature.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 93 SA performed in a neurointerventional reference center in a ten-year period (January 2013-December 2022). Suspected, angiopraphic and final diagnosis for each patient were studied and compared.
RESULTS: SA constituted an 0.8% of the total neurointerventional procedures performed (93 out of 109

INTRODUCTION: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) as introduced by the DSM-5 is characterized by chronic somatic symptoms not fully explained by underlying pathology and accompanied by psychological factors, the diagnostic B-criteria. These cognitive, affective, and behavioral disturbances are related to increased attention to somatic symptoms. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the association between the B-criteria and high symptom reporting in clinical settings.
METHODS: This 12-year retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study examined 6,491 patients from a German

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) has recently been recognized as an official psychiatric diagnosis in ICD-11, after years of research and advocacy in the field. It has been suggested that dissociative symptoms are a major feature of CPTSD. This scoping review aimed to summarize the existing knowledge base on the relationship between dissociation and CPTSD, and to identify relevant research gaps. We searched the two largest and most widely used academic databases (i.e., the Web of Science and Scopus databases) and the ProQuest database and identified original studies published in
