Different Cognitive Profiles of Patients with Severe Aphasia.

Cognitive dysfunction frequently occurs in aphasic patients and primarily compromises linguistic skills. However, patients suffering from severe aphasia show heterogeneous performance in basic cognition. Our aim was to characterize the cognitive profiles of patients with severe aphasia and to determine whether they also differ as to residual linguistic abilities. We examined 189 patients with severe aphasia with standard language tests and with the CoBaGA (Cognitive Test Battery for Global Aphasia), a battery of nonverbal tests that assesses a wide range of cognitive domains such as attention,

[Phoneme discrimination and dyslexia. Is the correlation gender-specific?].

Amongst pediatric phoniatry patients, the number of boys suspected of having dyslexia and/or an auditory processing disorder dominates over the number of girls. The aim of this study was to analyze whether there are different correlation patterns between phoneme discrimination and spelling ability in male and female children. Data from 253 children aged between 7 and 13 were analyzed retrospectively. Phoneme discrimination was assessed via the Heidelberg phoneme discrimination test and compared to the results of spelling and intelligence tests. We found a highly significant correlation between

Non-surgical treatment of adenoidal hypertrophy: the role of treating IgE-mediated inflammation.

Adenoidal hypertrophy (AH) and adenotonsillar hypertrophy are common disorders in the pediatric population and can cause symptoms such as mouth breathing, nasal congestion, hyponasal speech, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as well as chronic sinusitis and recurrent otitis media. More serious long-term sequelae, typically secondary to OSA, include neurocognitive abnormalities (e.g. behavioral and learning difficulties, poor attention span, hyperactivity, below average intelligence quotient); cardiovascular morbidity (e.g. decreased right ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricul

[Moyamoya disease presenting initially with mental disturbance].

Moyamoya disease usually presents itself in children as recurrent episodes of transient cerebral ischemia, such as acute motor and sensory deficits, speech disturbance, headache and seizures. Its initial symptoms rarely include mental disturbance. We experienced a nine-year-old girl with Moyamoya disease who showed choreic involuntary movements of the left upper and lower limbs. In spite of mental disturbance which began around the age of four, she had never visited hospital. CT and MRI detected multiple ischemic lesions in the frontal, parietal and occipital areas. SPECT demonstrated low perf

Cognitive abilities associated with the Silver-Russell syndrome.

There is no consensus opinion on whether or not cognitive impairments are found in the Silver-Russell syndrome. An investigation of a substantial sample was undertaken, using standardised assessments, in 20 boys and five girls aged 6.0 years to 11.8 years. Mean (SD) birth weights were -2.65 (0.95) SD scores, corrected for gestation. At evaluation the children had a mean (SD) age of 8.8 (1.8) years and a mean height of -2.26 (1.5) SD scores. Tests of cognitive abilities included assessments of general intelligence, reading and arithmetic attainments, and a cognitive processing task. Most had so

Artificial Intelligence in Videofluoroscopy Swallow Study Analysis: A Comprehensive Review.

Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing swallowing disorders, or dysphagia. However, the interpretation of VFSS is susceptible to human bias and subjectivity, resulting in significant inter- and intra-patient variability. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a potentially valuable tool for physicians. This study reviews state-of-the-art research utilizing AI to analyze VFSS for the assessment of swallowing disorders and to support clinical decision-making. Our comprehensive analysis highlights substantial progress in area

Imperative Role of Machine Learning Algorithm for Detection of Parkinson's Disease: Review, Challenges and Recommendations.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a

Artificial intelligence and deep learning in ophthalmology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) based on deep learning (DL) has sparked tremendous global interest in recent years. DL has been widely adopted in image recognition, speech recognition and natural language processing, but is only beginning to impact on healthcare. In ophthalmology, DL has been applied to fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography and visual fields, achieving robust classification performance in the detection of diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, the glaucoma-like disc, macular oedema and age-related macular degeneration. DL in ocular imaging may be used in

Characterization of a novel cation transporter ATPase gene (ATP13A4) interrupted by 3q25-q29 inversion in an individual with language delay.

Specific language impairment (SLI) is defined as failure to acquire normal language skills despite adequate intelligence and environmental stimulation. Although SLI disorders are often heritable, the genetic basis is likely to involve a number of risk factors. This study describes a 7-year-old girl carrying an inherited paracentric inversion of the long arm of chromosome 3 [46XX, inv(3)(q25.32-q29)] having clinically defined expressive and receptive language delay. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with locus-specific bacterial artificial chromosome clones (BACs) as probes was used to

Spatial and visuomotor performance with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The extent to which the cerebral hemispheres and their ipsilateral projection systems compensate for congenital absence of the corpus callosum was studied in an intelligent young adult with radiologically verified total agenesis. She was found to have bilateral speech and the ability to readily integrate visual, tactile, and verbal information simultaneously presented to both hemispheres. However, spatial performance, as demonstrated in blind tactile form board learning, was subnormal compared to normal controls. The results further suggest this impairment, especially severe in the nondominant

Baha implant as a hearing solution for single-sided deafness after retrosigmoid approach for the vestibular schwannoma: audiological results.

Skull base tumors and, in particular, vestibular schwannoma (VS) are among the etiological reasons for single-sided deafness (SSD). Patients with SSD have problems in understanding speech in a noisy environment and cannot localize the direction of sounds. For the majority, this is the handicap for which they try to find a solution. Apart from CROS hearing aids, Baha is one of the most frequently used systems for SSD compensation. 38 patients with single-sided deafness after retrosigmoid removal of a vestibular schwannoma underwent testing with a Baha softband from September 2010 to August 2014

The folded radial forearm flap in soft-palate and tonsillary fossa reconstruction: technical note.

Excision of the tonsillary fossa and soft palate leaves functional sequelae unless followed by a well-planned reconstruction phase. This must aim at restoring the pharyngeo-palatal structure, covering the dissected surfaces, and restoring continuity to the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves when these are sectioned. A reconstruction model of this complex three-dimensional anatomical area is proposed that uses a microvascular fasciocutaneous forearm flap adapted to the individual patient. Twelve patients were operated on, following this model. All flaps survived intact. Velopharyngeal functio

[Upward spread of masking in normal and abnormal ears].

Upward spread of masking was studied for normals and sensorineurally hearing-impaired subjects with high-frequency hearing loss. Hearing-impaired listeners were recruited in such a way as to present normal hearing on the frequency of the masker, that is a narrow band of noise centered at 1 000 Hz. Levels of the masker were set at 70, 80 and 90 dB, respectively. Results first indicated the presence of a relationship between masked and elevated absolute thresholds for a masker level of 70 dB. At masker levels of 80 and 90 dB, hearing-impaired listeners showed excessive upward spread of masking i

Patterns of dysfunction in schizophrenic patients on an aphasia test battery.

Twenty-seven schizophrenic patients free of any known neurologic deficit were tested with an aphasia test battery. The objective of the research was to derive a profile of schizophrenic language performance to permit its comparison with the profiles characteristic of aphasia, apraxia of speech, generalized intellectual impairment, and confused language. Results indicate that schizophrenic patients exhibit a profile of language performance distinctive from those found in aphasia, apraxia of speech, confusion, or generalized intellectual impairment and demonstrate that the disruption of language
