The records of nine dogs with intestinal volvulus were reviewed. Most were young adult (median 2.6 years) males (6/9) of medium to large breeds. Vigorous activity, dietary indiscretion, or trauma preceded volvulus. Signs included a peracute to acute onset of vomiting, hematochezia, a moderately distended and often painful abdomen, and shock. Normal packed cell volume, altered white blood cell count, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypokalemia, pathologic bowel dilatation, and serosanguineous abdominal fluid were common clinical findings. The urinary bladder of 10 clinically normal dogs was excised and the ureters were implanted into an isolated, vagotomized gastric segment derived from the fundic region of the stomach. Percutaneous nephrostomy catheters modified by cutting off the tubing connectors were implanted in three dogs with prostatic neoplasia to relieve or prevent stranguria. Surgical stapling equipment was used to perform open antiperistaltic side-to-side ("functional end-to-end") entero-anastomoses in 20 dogs and 4 cats. Twenty-one anastomoses healed uneventfully. Seven animals with severe bacterial peritonitis required open peritoneal drainage and delayed abdominal closure. There was postoperative leakage at the anastomotic site in two dogs and a localized abscess at the staple line in one cat. No long-term complications occurred in follow-up periods of 3 to 29 months.

Forty-five dogs with severe respiratory signs caused by idiopathic, acquired laryngeal paralysis were treated by partial laryngectomy. The predominant postoperative complications were coughing in 28 dogs and pneumonia in 15 dogs. Eight dogs required a second operation to alleviate persistent or recurrent upper airway obstruction. A vaginal septum was diagnosed in an English bulldog bitch during routine estrous cycle staging. The septum extended 16 cm from the vestibulo-vaginal junction to just caudal to the cervix. The septum was removed by two applications of an Nd:YAG laser via a flexible fiberoptic endoscope. Complete healing occurred over a 5-week period and was uneventful. The bitch was bred and subsequently delivered four puppies vaginally. Transendoscopic laser ablation provided a noninvasive approach to surgically remove a vaginal septum in the dog.

Radial dome osteotomy and external coaptation were used to correct forelimb growth deformities with carpal valgus angles of 15 to 43 degrees in 11 dogs (12 forelimbs). Osteotomy sites were clinically healed by week 4. Appearance and function in 10 limbs was good to excellent. The angular deformity recurred in one dog by week 4 due to partial closure of the distal radial growth plate. Carpal valgus recurred in one dog by week 2 because the ulnar osteotomy healed before radial growth ceased.
