Loss of teeth in positions mesially adjacent to implant-supported fixed dentures: a retrospective clinical survey.

The aim of this study was to investigate the loss of teeth in positions mesially adjacent to implant-supported fixed dentures (IFDs) after insertion of IFDs in unilateral free-end edentulous spaces in the mandible at dental clinics. There were a total of 157 adjacent teeth. Nine adjacent teeth (5.73%, 9 of 157), 9 opposing teeth (2.59%, 9 of 348), 38 posterior teeth (1.93%, 38 of 1,964), and 3 anterior teeth (0.22%, 3 of 1,380) were lost during the observation period. The percentage of lost adjacent teeth was higher than that of posterior teeth (P = .002). Teeth in positions adjacent to the IF

Teamwork in orthodontics: limiting the risks of root resorption.

Orthodontic treatment is not without risk. The risks may be due to patient factors (which may not always be evident before treatment) or may come about because of the treatment itself. While the common types of risk are well documented, less information is available as to how some of the more unusual problems can best be managed when they arise; often the need for teamwork between the patient, orthodontist and general dental practitioner (GDP) are underestimated. This paper presents three patients in whom various root-related problems existed either before orthodontic treatment or which arose

Factors affecting incidence of dry socket: a prospective community-based study.

Dry socket, or alveolar osteitis, can occur because of the removal of teeth. No clear etiology has been acknowledged; however, numerous risk factors have been proposed and tested. We report on the results of a prospective, multicenter study of the incidence and factors affecting the occurrence of alveolar osteitis at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and Community Dental Clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Ethics approval was gained from the University of Melbourne and Dental Health Services Victoria. The data were analyzed in a descriptive fashion, and the factors affecting alveolar osteiti

Estrogen replacement therapy in the elderly.

A woman spends about one-third of her life in her postmenopausal years. Some women supplement this period of decreased estrogen production with estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Since the 1970s, we have evaluated the long-term risks and benefits of ERT in one population of women, the Leisure World retirement community. ERT is the most effective method for preventing osteoporotic bone loss and fractures in postmenopausal women. In Leisure World, ERT reduced the risk of hip fractures about 50 %. The effect is greatest in long-term users but may be lost after discontinuation. Postmenopausal ost

Variation in enamel and dentine mineral concentration and density in primate molars.

OBJECTIVE: Variation in enamel and dentine mineral concentration and total effective density can be reliably collected using Micro-CT scans. Both variables are suggested to reflect mechanical properties such as hardness and elastic modulus in dental tissues, meaning Micro-CT methods allow relative composition and mechanical properties to be collected non-destructively. DESIGN: 16 lower molars from 16 Catarrhine primates were Micro-CT scanned alongside hydroxyapatite phantoms using standardized settings and methods to calculate mineral concentration and total effective density. Mineral concent

Comparison of modern light-curing hybrid resin-based composites to the tooth structure: Static and dynamic mechanical parameters.

The study aims to compare the way modern resin-based composites (RBCs) respond to mechanical stress related to the tooth structure they are designed to replace. Eight representative light-cured RBCs, including ormocers, giomers, RBCs with nano and agglomerated nanoparticles, prepolymerized, or compact fillers, were selected. Flexural strength, FS and modulus/E, were measured in a three-point bending test. A fractographic analysis determined the origin of fracture. The quasi-static (indentation hardness/HIT , indentation modulus/EIT ) and viscoelastic (storage modulus/E', loss modulus/E″, loss
