DNA sequences belonging to the recently discovered Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), now provisionally designated human herpesvirus 8, have been previously identified in an uncommonly occurring subset of AIDS-related lymphomas, referred to as body-cavity-based lymphomas (BCBLs), which present as lymphomatous effusions. Pyothorax-associated lymphomas (PALS) are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas that arise in the pleural cavity after long-standing pleural inflammation resulting from therapeutic artificial pneumothorax or from tuberculosis pleuritis. Although PALs present as solid tumor masse

Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is a prevalent form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and immune abnormalities play a crucial role in promoting its development. However, the dynamic changes and regulatory characteristics of immune cells during TPE progression remain incompletely understood. This study analyzed DNA methylation and transcriptome data from macrophages and CD4+ T cells from pleural lavage fluid of BCG-induced tuberculous pleurisy mouse models at specific time points (Days 0, 1, 7, and 14). The results revealed substantial alterations in DNA methylation patterns associated with in

INTRODUCTION: Chest radiography remains a critical tool for diagnosing intrathoracic tuberculosis (TB) in young children who are unable to expectorate. We describe the radiological findings in children under 3 years of age investigated for TB in the district of Manhiça, southern Mozambique, an area with a high prevalence of TB and HIV.
METHODS: Digital antero-posterior and lateral projections were performed and reviewed by two independent readers, using a standardized template. Readers included a local pediatrician and a pediatric radiologist blinded to all clinical information. International

This study is dedicated to the epidemiology of pneumothoraces (217 cases) during the last 8 years in an Intensive Care Department where most patients were admitted for respiratory diseases. Cases resulting from road-injury or surgery were excluded. Spontaneous pneumothoraces accounted for 61.8% of the cases. Among them, the most current etiology was idiopathic pneumothorax owing to small subpleural blebs, rarely leading to tension pneumothorax or hemapneumothorax. Other causes were pulmonary emphysema, more often than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or acute asthma, active pulmonary tube

Talaromyces marneffei is an important opportunistic fungal pathogen closely related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and its infection is relatively rare in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative populations. Although HIV-related immunosuppression remains the main risk factor, the history of treated tuberculosis and subsequent structural lung damage may constitute an underrecognized predisposing condition in non-epidemic areas, especially in elderly patients. This report described a 69-year-old HIV-negative male pulmonary infection case from a non-endemic area of T. marneffei

BACKGROUND: The detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is an important basis for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Detecting fresh tissue, pus, and other samples is challenging. Both metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and Xpert MTB/RIF have demonstrated excellent performance in the diagnosis of tuberculosis; however, their research base is still lacking in tissue or pus samples. We hope to explore the detection performance of mNGS and Xpert MTB/RIF in these sample types through this study.
METHODS: This study enrolled 154 patients suspected of having tuberculosis. Fresh tissues

BACKGROUND: Of an estimated 100,000 workers exposed to asbestos in India, less than 30 have been compensated. The reasons for such a small number are: refusal by management sponsored studies to grant medical certifications to workers suffering from occupational diseases, lack of training for doctors in diagnosis of occupational lung diseases, deliberate misdiagnosis by doctors of asbestosis as either chronic bronchitis or tuberculosis and the inherent class bias of middle class doctors against workers. The aim of the study was to identify workers suffering from Asbestosis (parenchymal and pleu

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is often made on clinical suspicion alone, resulting in both under- and overdiagnosis and relatively poor outcomes. In this study, we evaluated the clinical utility of the Xpert MTB/RIF on routinely collected extrapulmonary specimens in Ethiopia.
METHODS: This study was carried out at Jimma University Specialized Hospital, Southwest Ethiopia. Extrapulmonary specimens were collected from 572 patients clinically suspected of suffering from EPTB. All specimens were tested for TB by smear microscopy, culture, and Xpert MTB/RIF. The d

BACKGROUND: Synchronous primary lung cancer and mediastinal thymoma represent a rare clinical entity. While 18F-FDG PET/CT serves as a cornerstone modality for differentiating benign from malignant thoracic neoplasms, hypermetabolic activity secondary to severe localized inflammation can frequently masquerade as highly aggressive malignancies. Such radiologic-pathologic discordance significantly elevates the risk of misdiagnosis, thereby adding substantial complexity to clinical decision-making and patient management.

BACKGROUND: Chest wall tuberculosis may develop if tuberculous (TB) lesions spread through the chest wall and invade the thoracic cavity. The presence of a mass on the patient's chest wall may be the first indication of TB, and a chest CT scan can help diagnose external penetrating chest wall TB, the incursion of tuberculosis from the lungs into the chest wall.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the safety and efficacy of thoracoscopic-assisted surgery for the treatment of penetrating chest wall tuberculosis as a means of exploring novel concepts of minimally invasive surgery.
METHODS: Our hospi

Chronic cervical lymphadenopathy is a common clinical problem frequently requiring surgical biopsy. To evaluate the characteristics of surgically excised cervical lymph nodes (LN) in children in a developing country, we studied 1,332 children less than 15 years old (1,877 surgically removed cervical LNs) over a 23-year period (1976-1999). Indications for biopsy included failure to respond to antibiotic therapy, rapid increase in size, hard, matted LNs in the preauricular, supraclavicular, and posterior triangle of the neck, and difficulty in diagnosis. Clinical and pathological characteristics

BACKGROUND: Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis (PDH) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among persons with HIV (PWH) in the Americas. Clinical presentation often overlaps with other opportunistic infections -especially tuberculosis (TB)- and sensitive diagnostics are frequently unavailable. In Mexico, epidemiological data on histoplasmosis in PWH are scarce. This study aims to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics along with final diagnosis of hospitalized PWH who had clinical suspicion of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Pleural fluid is one of the common complications of thoracic diseases, and tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is the most common cause of pleural effusion in TB-endemic areas and the most common type of exudative pleural effusion in China. In clinical practice, distinguishing TPE from pleural effusion caused by other reasons remains a relatively challenging issue. The objective of present study was to explore the clinical significance of the pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase/adenosine deaminase ratio (pfLDH/pfADA) in the diagnosis of TPE.
METHODS: The clinical data of 618 patien

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in the AIDS population has a variable chest radiographic presentation. The association between the chest radiographic presentation of pulmonary TB and CD4 T-lymphocyte count in the HIV-infected patient was investigated in order to provide an empirical approach for early diagnosis, treatment, and isolation of these patients. A retrospective analysis of chest radiographs, CD4 T-lymphocyte counts, and clinical history of 80 patients from Hospital Kota Bharu, was performed. All patients were HIV-seropositive and had culture and /or cytology-proven pulmonary tuberculosis
