The neuroanatomy of erection in men is not well defined. Recently, we isolated successfully the cavernous nerves for acute and chronic neurostimulation to induce penile erection in dogs and monkeys. We then investigated the anatomy of these nerves in humans by cadaveric dissection and serial histologic sectioning. Our experience in tracing the spinal nuclei responsible for vesical and urethral function by transportation of horseradish peroxidase enabled us to explore the location and organization of the spinal center for erection. Thus, systemic knowledge of the neuroanatomy of erection was ac

UNLABELLED: Electrophysiological experiments in the partial cortical isolation ("undercut" or "UC") model of injury-induced neocortical epileptogenesis have shown alterations in GABAergic synaptic transmission attributable to abnormalities in presynaptic terminals. To determine whether the decreased inhibition was associated with structural abnormalities in GABAergic interneurons, we used immunocytochemical techniques, confocal microscopy and EM in UC and control sensorimotor rat cortex to analyze structural alterations in fast-spiking parvalbumin-containing interneurons and pyramidal (Pyr) ce

1. The activities of choline acetyltransferase (CAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were assayed in adult pigeon ciliary ganglia, in the post-synaptic ciliary and choroid nerves, and in ciliary nerve iris terminals isolated from control birds and from animals from which the oculomotor nerve was previously transected. Enzyme activity levels were also measured in the iris terminals after surgical section of the ciliary nerves. From differences in enzyme activity between control and 3-day denervated tissues, the localization of CAT and AChE in pre- and post-synaptic elements of the ganglia and a

Regeneration after injury occurs in axons that lie in the peripheral nervous system but fails in the central nervous system, thereby limiting functional recovery. Differences in axonal signalling in response to injury that might underpin this differential regenerative ability are poorly characterized. Combining axoplasmic proteomics from peripheral sciatic or central projecting dorsal root ganglion (DRG) axons with cell body RNA-seq, we uncover injury-dependent signalling pathways that are uniquely represented in peripheral versus central projecting sciatic DRG axons. We identify AMPK as a cru

OBJECTIVE: The production of neurotoxic β-amyloid and the formation of hyperphosphorylated tau are thought to be critical steps contributing to the neuropathological mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there remains an argument as to their importance in the onset of AD. Recent studies have shown that axonopathy is considered as an early stage of AD. However, the exact relationship between axonopathy and the origin and development of classic neuropathological changes such as senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) is unclear. The present study aimed to investigate t

Dystonia musculorum (dt) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder in mice. The dt gene product, dystonin, contains the bullous pemphigoid antigen 1 coding region at its C-terminus and an actin binding domain at its N-terminus. We demonstrate that dystonin expression throughout mouse development predominates in neurons of the cranial and spinal sensory ganglia. These structures are the most severely affected in dystonic mice which could explain their severe sensory ataxia. Since we show expression in sensory neurons with small and large axoplasmic volumes, but degeneration is restricted prima

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) restricts CNS delivery of macromolecular therapeutics such as antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). Focused ultrasound (FUS) with microbubbles enables transient, noninvasive opening of the BBB for deliver SOD1-targeted ASOs.
METHODS: A narrative review of the literature in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2020-2025) was conducted to evaluate FUS-assisted delivery of SOD1-targeted ASOs, with an emphasis on lipid- and calcium phosphate (CaP)- based nanopartic

Synaptic dysfunction emerges early in Alzheimer's disease, often years before the appearance of clinical symptoms, and is among the most rel … lly, we highlight emerging therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring mitochondrial quality control, axonal transport, and metabolic communication. By re-aligning bioenergetic support with synaptic function, such approaches may open a critical window for intervention before irreversible circuit degeneration takes hold.

In Parkinson's disease, hypercholinism in the striatum occurs, with the consequence of disturbed motor functions. Direct application of Botu … n density with the striatum and its maximum immunoreactivity. The results speak for a bidirectional axonal transport of BoNT-A after its application into the striatum to its widespread connected parts of the brain. Even one year after BoNT-A injection, cleaved SNAP-25 could still be detected.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Perry disease (or Perry syndrome) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by parkinsonism, neuropsychiatric symptoms, central hypoventilation, weight loss and distinct TDP-43 pathology. It is caused by mutations of the DCTN1 gene encoding an essential component of axonal transport. The objectives were to provide the current state of knowledge on clinical, pathological and genetic aspects of Perry disease, as well as practical suggestions for the management of the disease.
METHODS: Data on new patients from New Zealand, Poland and Colombia were…

Along with emergence of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in late 2019, a myriad of neurologic symptoms, associated with structural brain changes, were reported. In this paper, we provide evidence to critically discuss the claim that the survived patients could possibly be at increased risk for neurodegenerative diseases via various mechanisms. This virus can directly invade the brain through olfactory bulb, retrograde axonal transport from peripheral nerve endings, or via hematogenous or lymphatic routes. Infection of the neurons along with peripheral leuk…
