Application of a generalized additive mixed model in time series study of dairy cow behavior under hot summer conditions.

This study investigated the pattern of 6 behavioral parameters in Holstein dairy cows under heat stress (HS) conditions using a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) statistical approach, while also evaluating the effectiveness of a commercial electrolyte, osmolyte, and antioxidant blend in mitigating HS-induced adverse effects. The trial was conducted during a severe Italian summer on 84 multiparous dairy cows in the Central Italy, divided into 4 balanced groups (2 treated and 2 control) of 21 cows each. All animals received the same diet, and the treatment groups were supplemented with 3,1

Bolide impacts and the oxidation state of carbon in the Earth's early atmosphere.

A one-dimensional photochemical model was used to examine the effect of bolide impacts on the oxidation state of Earth's primitive atmosphere. The impact rate should have been high prior to 3.8 Ga before present, based on evidence derived from the Moon. Impacts of comets or carbonaceous asteroids should have enhanced the atmospheric CO/CO2 ratio by bringing in CO ice and/or organic carbon that can be oxidized to CO in the impact plume. Ordinary chondritic impactors would contain elemental iron that could have reacted with ambient CO2 to give CO. Nitric oxide (NO) should also have been produced

Improving the source apportionment method through temperature and attenuation correction for pharmaceuticals and personal care products in surface water.

Quantitatively identifying emission sources of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is crucial for controlling PPCP contamination, and receptor models have been extensively applied in surface water for source apportionment. However, the resolution of receptor models is limited due to the neglect of indicator-PPCP characteristic variations in emission sources and receiving water. Herein, we propose a strategy to improve the method resolution via correction coefficients that elaborate on tunable variables reflecting climate impacts and in-stream attenuations. Temperature and attenu

Simulating organic aerosol formation during the photooxidation of toluene/NOx mixtures: comparing the equilibrium and kinetic assumption.

Organic compounds contribute an appreciable mass to particulate matter and thus impact the hygroscopic and radiative properties of an aerosol distribution. Being able to predict the chemical and physical properties of aerosols based on their size and composition is critical to assessing their impact on air quality, visibility, and climate change. In this study, a comparison was performed between an equilibrium and a kinetic model for simulating organic aerosol formation during the photooxidation of toluene/NO/isopropyl nitrite mixtures. Both models used an explicit gas-phase toluene scheme (Un

Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) and working conditions, predictors of mental health and antidepressant and opioid use in Australia: a study protocol for longitudinal data linkage.

INTRODUCTION: Work-related stress is a social determinant of global health that represents a huge cost to workers' health and reduces work performance. In Australia, mental well-being is a pressing national issue-with one in five Australians experiencing mental disorders. Antidepressants are a first-line medication commonly used to treat mental disorders. Recently, Australia has seen a dramatic increase in the use of prescribed antidepressant medications to treat mental health related illnesses. Australia has also seen a dramatic increase in the use of prescribed opioid analgesics for non-canc

Possible adaptation measures for climate change in preventing heatstroke among older adults in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Heatstroke mortality is highest among older adults aged 65 years and older, and the risk is even doubled among those aged 75 years and older. The incidence of heatstroke is expected to increase in the future with elevated temperatures owing to climate change. In the context of a super-aged society, we examined possible adaptation measures in Japan that could prevent heatstroke among older people using an epidemiological survey combined with mathematical modeling. METHODS: To identify possible interventions, we conducted a cross-sectional survey, collecting information on heatstr

The effect of weather and climate on dengue outbreak risk in Peru, 2000-2018: A time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is the most common arboviral disease in humans, with an estimated 50-100 million annual infections worldwide. Dengue fever cases have increased substantially in the past four decades, driven largely by anthropogenic factors including climate change. More than half the population of Peru is at risk of dengue infection and due to its geography, Peru is also particularly sensitive to the effects of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Determining the effect of ENSO on the risk for dengue outbreaks is of particular public health relevance and may also be applicable to othe

Is heartworm disease really spreading in Europe?

Based on recently published surveys and newly acquired data, a study was conducted to verify the distribution of filarial worm (Filarioidea) infections in Europe, with particular emphasis on canine heartworm infection (Dirofilaria immitis). A Geographic Information System based on thermal regimen was constructed as a means to identify areas potentially suitable for heartworm transmission, taking into account that the development of D. immitis larvae in the mosquito does not occur below the threshold temperature of approximately 14 degrees C. Furthermore, a bionomic model of D. immitis in its m

Designing for mild winters: evidence-based thermal comfort benchmarks from urban parks in a sub-tropical city.

Outdoor thermal comfort in the cool season remains under-specified for humid subtropical cities. We conducted a winter field study across four urban parks in Hong Kong, collecting 611 paired questionnaire-microclimate records (December-March). On-site measurements (air temperature, globe temperature, humidity, wind) were linked at 60-s resolution to Cantonese surveys of thermal sensation. Neutral temperature was estimated with ordinary least squares and confirmed with proportional-odds models; 2,000-fold bootstrap confidence intervals and 0.5 °C binned regressions quantified uncertainty and se

Reaction norm modelling of heat stress for milk production in three dairy cattle breeds.

Due to climate change, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, which include days with higher temperatures, especially in the summer period. These more frequent heat events can have physiological consequences on dairy cattle when the ambient temperature exceeds their thermoneutral zone. The present study analysed heat stress effects on milk yield in three German dairy cattle breeds with data from southwest Germany. Daily milking and climate data (temperature and humidity) were collected between June 2022 and December 2024 from 5 182 dairy cattle from German Holstein Friesian, German

The toll of the cyclone: mental health impacts of tropical cyclones in coastal communities of India.

With extreme weather events growing in severity and frequency, interventions aimed at preventing associated health disorders in coastal communities have become salient. Coastal communities are expected to develop coping mechanisms to climate change related stressors. However, these frontline communities may need special assistance to effectively adapt to unprecedented climatic disasters. Existing infrastructure and policy support systems may be inadequate, resulting in residual vulnerabilities that require attention. We examine whether tropical cyclones inflict adverse mental health impacts on

Climate change and air pollution can amplify vulnerability of glucose metabolism: The mediating effects of biological aging.

Climate change and air pollution pose significant global health threats, including impacts on diabetes risk; however, their long-term effects on insulin resistance (IR), a key determinant in diabetes pathophysiology, remain unclear. This study investigated whether exposure to heatwaves, temperature fluctuations, and warm-season ozone (O3) contributes to or exacerbates IR and explored the potential mediating role of biological aging. The study enrolled 6901 participants and assessed both traditional and novel IR indicators: estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), triglyceride-glucose (TyG) inde

Benefits of public awareness in mitigating cystic echinococcosis risk in Western China: A climate and socio-economic perspective.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cystic echinococcosis (CE), a widespread zoonotic disease, imposes a significant public health burden, especially in western China. However, under the background of global change, how to meet the challenge of the future risk of CE remains unclear. As global climate change, land use changes, and socio-economic factors continue to progress, the spread and intensity of CE may potentially worsen, making it crucial to assess and mitigate future risks. METHODS: By employing Bayesian additive regression trees model to develop risk models for CE in animal hosts (cattle,

Water sources for street trees in mesic urban environments.

Street trees support climate resiliency through a variety of pathways, such as offsetting urban heat and attenuating storm water runoff. While urban trees in arid and semiarid ecosystems have been shown to take up water from irrigation, it is unknown where street trees in mesic cities obtain their water. In this study, we use natural abundance stable isotopes to estimate the proportional sources of water taken up by Acer platanoides street trees in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, including precipitation, irrigation, groundwater, and wastewater. We use Bayesian multisource mixing models t

Cloudiness reduces the bleaching response of coral reefs exposed to heat stress.

Climate change and warming ocean temperatures are a threat to coral reef ecosystems. Since the 1980s, there has been an increase in mass coral bleaching and associated coral mortality due to more frequent and severe thermal stress. Although most research has focused on the role of temperature, coral bleaching is a product of the interacting effects of temperature and other environmental variables such as solar radiation. High light exacerbates the effects of thermal stress on corals, whereas reductions in light can reduce sensitivity to thermal stress. Here, we use an updated global dataset of

Revealing two dynamic dengue epidemic clusters in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Thailand is home to around 69 million individuals. Dengue is hyper-endemic and all 4 serotypes are in active circulation in the country. Dengue outbreaks occur almost annually within Thailand in at least one province but the spatio-temporal and environmental interface of these outbreaks has not been studied. METHODS: We develop Bayesian regime switching (BRS) models to characterize outbreaks, their persistence and infer their likelihood of occurrence across time for each administrative province where dengue case counts are collected. BRS was compared against two other classificati

Sensitivity and Acclimation of Three Canopy-Forming Seaweeds to UVB Radiation and Warming.

Canopy-forming seaweeds, as primary producers and foundation species, provide key ecological services. Their responses to multiple stressors associated with climate change could therefore have important knock-on effects on the functioning of coastal ecosystems. We examined interactive effects of UVB radiation and warming on juveniles of three habitat-forming subtidal seaweeds from Western Australia-Ecklonia radiata, Scytothalia dorycarpa and Sargassum sp. Fronds were incubated for 14 days at 16-30°C with or without UVB radiation and growth, health status, photosynthetic performance, and light

The Indian Ocean dipole and cholera incidence in Bangladesh: a time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences the interannual variation of endemic cholera in Bangladesh. There is increased interest in the influence of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), a climate mode of coupled ocean-atmosphere variability, on regional ocean climate in the Bay of Bengal and on Indian monsoon rainfall. OBJECTIVES: We explored the relationship between the IOD and the number of cholera patients in Bangladesh, controlling for the effects of ENSO. METHODS: Time-series regression was performed.
