Interventions to improve working memory, e.g. by combining task rehearsal and non-invasive brain stimulation, are gaining popularity. Many f … te to a better understanding of factors affecting the outcome of tDCS when used in conjunction with cognitive training to improve working memory. Moreover, our results have implications for training regimens, e.g., by designing interventions predicated on baseline cognitive abilities, or focusing on strategy development for specific attentional skills.

In the current study, we investigate the neuronal correlates of the Attention Training Technique (ATT), a psychotherapeutic intervention used in metacognitive therapy to enhance flexible cognitive control and ameliorate rumination. We adapted the ATT in a neuroscientific attention paradigm in order to investigate the effects of its components: selective attention, attention switching and divided attention in comparison to a control task. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to measure changes in blood oxygenation of fronto-lateral and parietal cortical areas. Furthermore, subjects ra

There currently exists evidence of moderate quality that cognitive training, blood pressure management, and physical activity can delay onset or slow progression of AD.1 All other preventive interventions have cither produced negative and controversial results or are still under investigation. This issue will present reviews on both established preventive interventions and those under investigation.

Neurosteroids can alter neuronal excitability interacting with specific neurotransmitter receptors, thus affecting several functions such as cognition and emotionality. In this study, we investigated, in adult male rats, the effects of the acute administration of pregnenolone-sulfate (PREGS) (10 mg/Kg, s.c.) on cognitive processes using the Can test, a non aversive spatial/visual task which allows the assessment of spatial information-acquisition during the baseline training, and of memory retention in the longitudinal study. Furthermore, on the basis of PREGS pharmacological profile, the modu

Much has been written about the interplay between mental health and substance use disorders. However, there is a third dimension, which often complicates the provision of care and renders many mainstream approaches less effective. Cognitive impairments, including those that arise from traumatic brain injury, are increasingly being recognized as an important consideration in addictions programming. This article will discuss the findings from a cross-sectorial partnership between the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Community Head Injury Resource Services of Toronto (CHIRS). Fou

Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome linked to adverse health outcomes, yet optimal intervention strategies remain limited. Virtual Reality (VR), a technology that enables subjects to immerse themselves in a computer-generated environment, is increasingly used in clinical nursing. Virtual reality has demonstrated both theoretical and practical benefits in mitigating physical, cognitive, and functional impairments among frail older adults; however, its overall efficacy remains to be systematically synthesized. This study aimed to evaluate the specific effects of VR-based training on frailt

UNLABELLED: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Recent studies have investigated the potential role of physical exercise as a complementary intervention to traditional ADHD treatments. This study aimed to compare the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on ADHD symptoms and behavioral inhibition in children diagnosed with ADHD. In a randomized controlled trial, 60 male participants aged 7-10 years were

Numerous studies have evaluated the efficacy of interventions to improve locomotion after acute-onset brain injury, although most focus on patients with stroke, with less attention toward traumatic brain injury (TBI). For example, a number of studies in patients post-stroke have evaluated the effects of high-intensity training (HIT) attempting to maximize stepping practice, while no studies have attempted this intervention in patients with TBI. The purpose of this blinded-assessor randomized trial was to evaluate the effects of HIT focused on stepping practice versus conventional training on w

INTRODUCTION: Shuai Shou Gong (SSG) is a type of Arm Swing Exercise (ASE) developed and practiced especially by older people in China for over one thousand years to maintain physical health and well-being. Until now the potential benefits of SSG have not been investigated in a Randomised Control Trial (RCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty six older women were recruited from each of two urban communities in Khon Kaen, Thailand. One community was randomly assigned as the Exercise Group (mean age 68.3 years, standard deviation 5.6 years) and the other as the Control Group (69.4 years, 4.4 years).

Prospective memory (PM), which enables one to remember to carry out delayed intentions, is crucial for everyday functioning. PM commonly deteriorates upon cognitive decline in older adults, but several studies have shown that PM in older adults can be improved by training. The current study aimed to summarise this evidence by conducting a qualitative systematic analysis and quantitative meta-analysis of the effects of PM training in older adults, for which systematic searches were conducted across seven databases (Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, CINAHL and Scopus).
