Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone(®)) is an immunomodulatory polypeptide used in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. It represents a safe treatment option with mild side effects. In this study, we look at a 39-year-old woman who received glatiramer acetate as subcutaneous injections for two months and developed contact dermatitis. The drug had to be stopped, and treatment with topical prednisone was initiated. Prick/scratch testing was negative but the lymphocyte transformation test was highly positive for glatiramer acetate. This is the first report on contact dermatitis induced …

The skin changes outlined in this article can be important clues to an underlying malignancy. Paraneoplastic dermatoses are skin disorders associated with an underlying neoplasm and whose course parallels that of the neoplasm. Recognizing these skin presentations leads to early diagnosis and management of the underlying malignancy. Effective treatment of the associated neoplasm often leads to improvement of the cutaneous manifestations and should be the primary focus of each patient's management.

Reports of vitamin E-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and frequent use of vitamin-E derivatives (tocopherol, tocopheryl linoleate, tocopherol acetate, etc) in skin care products deserves further investigation into tolerability and suitability of vitamin E in skin care preparations. A PubMed search was conducted to review the prevalence of vitamin E-induced ACD. It revealed 931 cases of vitamin E-induced ACD mainly from one large study. There were no reported deaths and only three patients required hospitalization for treatment. It appears that vitamin E-induced ACD is an uncommon phen…

BACKGROUND: many topical products are used in the genital region. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may develop from product use or due to treatment of an underlying dermatosis.
OBJECTIVES: our goal was to identify the frequency of ACD and identify top allergens in the genital region.
METHODS: data were analyzed for 1,238 patients tested between January 1990 and December 2006. Fifteen allergens caused reactions at rates greater than 1%. Thirteen anatomic regions were assessed. Statistical analyses were by chi-square test and Fisher exact test. Adjusted level of significance due to multiple t…

The Dutch evidence-based guideline 'Coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis' contains instructions for detection and treatment of coeliac disease. Coeliac disease has a high prevalence: 0.5 - 1.3%. The disease has a broad spectrum of symptoms, frequently also outside the gastrointestinal tract. Relatives of patients and persons with autoimmune diseases, microscopic colitis, IgA deficiency and syndromes of Down, Turner and Williams have an increased risk of coeliac disease. Detection is carried out by determination of IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase and endomysium. Testing for Ig…

PURPOSE: Recall dermatitis is a rare and poorly understood drug-related event. Activated by exposure to sunlight or Ultraviolet (UV), drug-related phototoxic reactions have been reported with conventional chemotherapy agents or antibiotics.
METHODS: Here, we report the first case of acute dermatologic photo-induced recall reaction secondary to sorafenib in a patient with renal cell carcinoma.
RESULTS: Four weeks after stopping sorafenib, a patient with renal cell carcinoma developed an acute erythematous and papulomatous eruption restricted to the hands after prolonged solar exposure. The er…

Moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) negatively affects patients and their families. Pruritus, scratching, and sleep problems are common complaints linked to disturbed quality of life. Treatment is complex, and nonadherence rates are high. This article reviews the effect of AD on patients and their families and intervention strategies that have some success in improving quality of life. A treatment model for addressing the psychosocial effect of moderate to severe AD within a multidisciplinary setting is suggested herein.

BACKGROUND: In Asia, toxic adverse effects due to picking or consumption of shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes), the second most eaten mushroom in the world are well-known. Its increasing consumption in Europe, let us to emphasize that shiitake dermatitis would occur more and more frequently in Occident.
CASE REPORT: A 78-year-old woman was referred for an erythematous, micro-papular, extremely pruriginous rash disseminated all over the body (including face and scalp). No drugs had been recently introduced. Questioning revealed that lesions appeared 48 hours after eating a great quantity of…
