The morphological features of early intestinal ulcerations induced in rodents with axenic cultures of Entamoeba histolytica were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Amebas did not attach to the luminal surface of the mucosa except at interglandular regions, where parasites penetrated apparently through pseudopodial movement. The cause of death (besides dehydration) for 140 diarrhoeal patients who died in hospital following rehydration was determined by autopsy examination. Children under 5 years comprised 74% of the patients. Diarrhoeal pathogens were identified as Shigella spp. in 27%, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in 17%, Entamoeba histolytica in 16%, Campylobacter jejuni in 12%, Salmonella spp. in 4%, Vibrio cholerae in 4%, and Giardia lambliain 4% of cases. Infection with Entamoeba histolytica is widespread and cosmopolitan, but is particularly common in hot zone countries in areas with poor sanitary and hygienic conditions, a lack of access to safe drinking water, and noncompliance with food hygiene. Diarrhoea is a common presenting complaint to the Acute Medical Unit. We report a case of acute fulminant necrotizing amebic colitis in a 73 year old man with no recent travel history preceding his admission. Such cases are often difficult to diagnose and hence associated with a high mortality, unless treated promptly and appropriately. This case report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment.

Infection rate of imported monkeys, under this study, with intestinal protozoa is higher than the infection rate with intestinal nematodes. Mostly encountered protozoa were E. coli, E. nana, E. histolytica and I. butschlii. Formalin-Ether concentration method yielded higher % positive for E. histolytica than the culture method using Tanabe-Chiba medium, but the results obtained from these 2 methods correlate perfectly well with each other. Efficacy of thiabendazole against intestinal nematodes such as Strongyloides, Trichuris, Physaloptera, Oesophagostomum and Capillaria was very satisfactory.
