The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the baby-friendly community initiative and maternal infant and young child nutrition in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to decline in access and utilization of the baby-friendly community initiative (BFCI) which is being implemented in Kenya. The impact of the pandemic on the BFCI and on maternal and child health and nutrition has not been documented. We undertook a qualitative study that assessed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the baby-friendly community initiative (BFCI) activities, maternal and child health (MCH) services and maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) practices in Kenya. METHODS: Data on the impact of the pandemic on the BFCI activities,

Impact of climate change on maternal health outcomes: An evidence gap map review.

Climate change poses unique challenges to maternal well-being and increases complications during pregnancy and childbirth globally. This evidence gap map (EGM) aims to identify gaps in existing knowledge and areas where further research related to climate change and its impact on maternal health is required. The following databases were searched individually from inception to present: Medline, EMBASE, and Global Health via OVID; Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) via EBSCOhost; Scopus; and organizational websites. In this EGM, we integrated 133 studies published

Literacy is power: structural drivers of child malnutrition in rural Liberia.

BACKGROUND: In Liberia, an estimated 32% of children under 5 are stunted. Malnutrition and hunger worsened during the country's civil war and were further exacerbated by the 2014-2016 outbreak of Ebola virus disease. Studies examining adherence to recommended infant and young child feeding practices frequently do so with an emphasis on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of mothers and caregivers. Often overlooked are the structural factors that enable or constrain their agency to practise evidence-based recommendations. METHODS: Between July and December 2017, we surveyed 100 Liberian mothe

Examining the relationship between blood lead level and stunting, wasting and underweight- A cross-sectional study of children under 2 years-of-age in a Bangladeshi slum.

Elevated blood lead level (BLL) is known to cause cardiac, immune, and cognitive damage but had not been thoroughly studied in relation to stunting among children under two years of age. We primarily aimed to assess the relationship between elevated BLL, the accumulation of concerned amount of the metal lead in blood and stunting and secondarily-wasting and underweight amongst Bangladeshi children less than two years of age. For this cross-sectional study, BLL measurements, anthropometric data, and socioeconomic indicator information were collected and analyzed for 729 children under two years

Sunlight to Plasma: Mimicking nature's light for smarter agriculture and crop production.

BACKGROUND: Over Earth's history, the Sun has continuously released coronal mass ejections of plasma that have flowed toward Earth, generating the need for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) for plants. On the other hand, engineered plasma interacts with air, generating RONS. Thus, the natural process is simulated using engineered plasma (hereafter, plasma), which acts as an artificial Sun. Plasma agriculture offers a sustainable alternative by leveraging plasma-generated RONS to stimulate plant growth and generate nitrogen fertilizer through eco-friendly methods. AIM OF REVIEW: The

Factors associated with childhood chronic malnutrition during the first 12 months of life in children from a peruvian cohort.

BACKGROUD: Motivation for the study. Chronic child malnutrition (CCM) remains a critical problem, especially in regions such as Huancavelica and Loreto. The specific factors that affect children during their first year of life are not fully understood, in spite of existing programs aimed at this issue. Main findings. Being male, bottle feeding, and using polluting fuels were identified as factors that increase the risk of CCM, while attending six or more prenatal checkups and receiving support from the JUNTOS program help prevent it. Factors such as maternal language and limited maternal parti

Tomato plant leaf disease segmentation and multiclass disease detection using hybrid optimization enabled deep learning.

Production of crops is increasing day by day in agriculture sectors. The insecurity of food is a main reason of plant disease and is a main global issue that humans face these days. With the design of contemporary environmental agriculture, more focus is devised for yielding the crop and elevating its quality. The occurrence of crops has elevated in years and the kind of disease has become more and more complex. The disease in plants and the pernicious insects are the major risks in agriculture field. Thus, earlier discovery and treatment of this disease are imperative. The major design of Dee

[Epidemiological indicators and correlations of adolescent aggression in an urban student population].

Adolescent aggression has received a wide and longtime attention in scientific research, because of the extent of the phenomenon in this age group and of the negative consequences it inflicts on affected adolescents, and their human environments. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the proportion (of high levels) of aggressive behaviors (physical, verbal, and direct aggression, anger, and hostility) in an urban sample of adolescent students, as well as to investigate associations between the occurrence of these behaviors, and adolescents' characteristics and mental health pr

Consumption of pesticide-treated wheat seed by a rural population in Malawi.

An outbreak of typhoid fever in rural Malawi triggered an investigation by the Malawi Ministry of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July 2009. During the investigation, villagers were directly consuming washed, donated, pesticide-treated wheat seed meant for planting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential for pesticide exposure and health risk in the outbreak community. A sample of unwashed (1430 g) and washed (759 g) wheat seed donated for planting, but which would have been directly consumed, was tested for 365 pesticides. Results were compared

Structural determinants of depressive symptoms among refugees and host communities in South Sudan: evidence from explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms in displacement settings are often framed as consequences of refugee status, which can obscure the shared structural conditions emphasized in the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) framework that shape mental health for refugees and host communities and limit the identification of practical intervention targets. This study examines the relative contribution of health, socioeconomic, protection, and contextual factors to depressive symptom severity among adults living in displacement-affected settings in South Sudan. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representat
