Context-dependent cortical activation in response to financial reward and penalty: an event-related fMRI study.

An event-related fMRI technique was used to assess neural responses to financial reward and penalty during a simple gambling task. We attempted to determine whether brain activities are dependent on the unique context of an event sequence. Thirty-six healthy volunteers participated in the study. The task was to guess the color of the suit of a card on each trial and to respond by pressing a button. Every correct response ("win") and incorrect response ("loss") was associated with financial reward and penalty, respectively. The magnitude of reward or penalty in each trial did not change; howeve

A parametric fMRI study of overt and covert shifts of visuospatial attention.

It has recently been demonstrated that a cortical network of visuospatial and oculomotor control areas is active for covert shifts of spatial attention (shifts of attention without eye movements) as well as for overt shifts of spatial attention (shifts of attention with saccadic eye movements). Studies examining activity in this visuospatial network during attentional shifts at a single rate have given conflicting reports about how the activity differs for overt and covert shifts. To better understand how the network subserves attentional shifts, we performed a parametric study in which subjec

Inverse relationship between serotonin 5-HT(1A) receptor binding and anxiety: a [(11)C]WAY-100635 PET investigation in healthy volunteers.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the relationship between anxiety--a facet of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory dimension of neuroticism--and serotonin 5-HT(1A) receptor binding potential. METHOD: Positron emission tomography with [(11)C]WAY-100635 was used to estimate regional 5-HT(1A) binding potential in 19 healthy volunteers who completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. Correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the degree of association between 5-HT(1A) binding potential and personality inventory measures. RESULTS: There was a significant negative correlation be

Increased activation of frontal areas during arm movement in idiopathic torsion dystonia.

Most positron emission tomography (PET) studies of regional cerebral function in idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) have failed to show abnormalities, but there have been few studies of the changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) that occur during movement in dystonia. Using PET, we have studied six patients with familial generalized ITD both at rest and while moving a joystick with the right hand. The patterns of CBF change obtained were compared with those in six age-matched control subjects. In the dystonia group, free selection of movement was associated with relative increases in rC

Methylazoxymethanol acetate-induced abnormalities in the entorhinal cortex of the rat; parallels with morphological findings in schizophrenia.

It has been suggested repeatedly that the non-heritable factors in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia involve abnormalities of prenatal neurodevelopment. Furthermore, post-mortem studies show neuropathology of apparently developmental origin in the entorhinal cortex and other brain regions of schizophrenic subjects. In an attempt to model a developmental defect of the entorhinal region in the rat, cerebrocortical proliferation was briefly interrupted during its earliest stages, when the entorhinal area is thought to undergo major cell division. Specifically, the experimental set-up involved the

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the anterior cingulate region in schizophrenia.

The authors measured N-acetylaspartate (NAA, a putative neuronal marker), choline and creatine in the anterior cingulate region of 26 schizophrenic patients and 16 control subjects using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H MRSI). Relative to the control group, the patients with schizophrenia demonstrated significantly lower NAA in both the right and left anterior cingulate regions. There was no association between NAA and duration of illness or medication dosage. No group differences or lateralized asymmetries in choline or creatine were noted. The NAA findings provide

Glucose metabolic correlates of continuous performance test performance in adults with a history of infantile autism, schizophrenics, and controls.

Twenty-five schizophrenic patients, fourteen adults with a history of infantile autism, and twenty normal controls performed a test of sustained attention, the degraded stimulus continuous performance test (CPT), during the 35 minute 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose uptake period preceding positron emission tomographic (PET) scan acquisition. This is the first analysis comparing correlations between glucose metabolic rate (GMR) for selected regions and CPT performance. CPT performance differed in controls and schizophrenics, but autistics did not differ from either group. In controls and schizophrenic

Regional cerebral blood flow differences in patients with mild cognitive impairment between those who did and did not develop Alzheimer's disease.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous condition associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. This study aimed to identify areas of initial hypoperfusion in MCI conversion to AD using technetium (Tc-99m) hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (TC-99m HMPAO) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to compare baseline cerebral hypoperfusion in converted MCI and non-converted MCI patients and normal controls. Forty-nine MCI patients were recruited for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), detailed neuropsychological testing, Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT,

Effects of sex, pubertal stage, and pubertal hormones on frontal and limbic responses to fearful and happy faces during early adolescence.

Adolescence is a key stage of brain development marked by heightened emotional reactivity, with variability across individuals and sexes. Puberty onset also initiates a cascade of changes that influence how the brain responds to social-emotional information. To more fully characterize the role of sex and puberty in the brain's response to social-emotional cues during early adolescence, we tested the main and interactive effects of sex, pubertal stage, and pubertal hormone levels on neural activation to negative and positive facial expressions. Combining baseline and 2-year follow-up data from

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation alleviates anxiety-like behaviors in mice with post-traumatic stress disorder by regulating glutamatergic neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex.

Vagus nerve stimulation has been certified to be an effective therapeutic modality for emotional disorders, especially anxiety triggered by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms underlying the efficacy of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to elucidate whether and how taVNS influences anxiety-like behaviors elicited by PTSD, focusing on synaptic plasticity in taVNS-activated neurons (TANs) of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Our findings substantiate that taVNS significantly mitigat

Age of onset of adolescent binge drinking is differentially associated with cortical thickness in post-9/11 adult Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for neural development and has been associated with high rates of alcohol abuse. This research examined potential long-term brain and behavioral effects of early versus late-onset adolescent binge drinking in an adult sample of post-9/11 Veterans. METHODS: We compared cortical thickness measures in Veterans with a history of binge drinking that began before the age of 15 (n = 50; mean age = 32.1 years) to those with a history of binge drinking with onset after the age of 15 (n = 300; mean age = 32.1 years). Data processing was conducted with FreeSu

Prenatal alcohol exposure affects brain function during place learning in a virtual environment differently in boys and girls.

INTRODUCTION: Although performance deficits in place learning have been reported in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), neural correlates of these deficits have not been investigated. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of 57 children (41 alcohol-exposed; 16 controls; mean age = 9.4 years; 29 boys) examined effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on place learning in a virtual environment, the computer-generated (CG) arena. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired while children passively viewed a recording of an experimenter completing the

Reduced empathic responses for sexually objectified women: An fMRI investigation.

Sexual objectification is a widespread phenomenon characterized by a focus on the individual's physical appearance over his/her mental state. This has been associated with negative social consequences, as objectified individuals are judged to be less human, competent, and moral. Moreover, behavioral responses toward the person change as a function of the degree of the perceived sexual objectification. In the present study, we investigated how behavioral and neural representations of other social pain are modulated by the degree of sexual objectification of the target. Using a within-subject fM

Brain amyloid burden and cerebrovascular disease are synergistically associated with neurometabolism in cognitively unimpaired older adults.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. The pathological hallmarks of AD such as beta amyloid (Aβ) aggregation and neurometabolic change, as indicated by altered myo-inositol (mI) and N-acetylaspartate (NAA) levels, typically precede the onset of cognitive dysfunction by years. Furthermore, cerebrovascular disease occurs early in AD, but the interplay between vascular and neurometabolic brain change is largely unknown. Thirty cognitively normal older adults (age = 70 ± 5.6 years, Mini-Mental State Examination = 29.2 ± 1) received 11-C-Pittsbu

Initially intact neural responses to pain in autism are diminished during sustained pain.

Pain assessments typically depend on self-report of the pain experience. Yet, in individuals with autism spectrum disorders, this can be an unreliable due to communication difficulties. Importantly, observations of behavioral hypo- and hyperresponsivity to pain suggest altered pain sensitivity in autism spectrum disorder. Neuroimaging may provide insight into mechanisms underlying pain behaviors. The neural pain signature reliably responds to painful stimulation and is modulated by other outside regions, affecting the pain experience. In this first functional magnetic resonance imaging study o

Interference and conflict monitoring in individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment: A structural study of the anterior cingulate cortex.

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is a clinical condition characterized by memory impairment in the absence of any other cognitive impairment and is commonly associated with high conversion to Alzheimer's disease. Recent evidence shows that executive functions and selective attention mechanisms could also be impaired in aMCI. In this study, we investigated performance differences (i.e., reaction times [RTs] and accuracy) between a group of aMCI participants and a group of age-matched healthy individuals on the attentional network task (ANT) focusing on situations with increased interfe

Neural differences in self-perception during illness and after weight-recovery in anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe mental illness characterized by problems with self-perception. Whole-brain neural activations in healthy women, women with AN and women in long-term weight recovery following AN were compared using two functional magnetic resonance imaging tasks probing different aspects of self-perception. The Social Identity-V2 task involved consideration about oneself and others using socially descriptive adjectives. Both the ill and weight-recovered women with AN engaged medial prefrontal cortex less than healthy women for self-relevant cognitions, a potential biological t

Gray and white matter trajectories in patients with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Findings on brain structural abnormalities in patients with bipolar disorder (BP) are inconsistent and little is known about age-related evolution of these changes. We employed a cross-sectional, case-control study to compare structural age-related brain trajectories in patients with BP and healthy control subjects (HC) over a period of approximately 50 years. The primary aim was to understand whether white (WM) and gray matter (GM) abnormalities are present from the beginning of the illness and how they change over time. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients with BP and 78 HC matched f

Aberrant function of learning and cognitive control networks underlie inefficient cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa: a cross-sectional fMRI study.

OBJECTIVES: People with Anorexia Nervosa exhibit difficulties flexibly adjusting behaviour in response to environmental changes. This has previously been attributed to problematic behavioural shifting, characterised by a decrease in fronto-striatal activity. Additionally, alterations of instrumental learning, which relies on fronto-striatal networks, may contribute to the observation of inflexible behaviour. The authors sought to investigate the neural correlates of cognitive flexibility and learning in Anorexia Nervosa. METHOD: Thirty-two adult females with Anorexia Nervosa and thirty-two ag
