Severe intestinal ischemia as a presenting feature of metastatic ileal carcinoid tumor: role of MDCT with coronal reformation in the early diagnosis.

Intestinal ischemia is a rare but potentially fatal complication of mesenteric metastasis of intestinal carcinoid tumor and its mechanism isn't entirely clear. We present a case of intestinal ischemia secondary to metastatic ileal carcinoid tumor diagnosed by CT that showed a small mesenteric mass with an extensive desmoplastic reaction causing an intense involvement of the small bowel. Improvements in CT technology with the use of MDCT scanners and advanced reformatting capabilities play an important role in the early diagnosis and accurate recognition of this entity and its need for immediat

Atypical adenolymphoma and glomus caroticum tumour: a rare coincidence.

We describe the rare simultaneous appearance of an atypical adenolymphoma with a glomus caroticum tumour on the same side of the neck in a middle-aged man. This case report is the first to describe this coexistence. Due to the atypical, cyst-like presentation of the Warthin's tumour, a final diagnosis was made only after surgical resection and histopathological examination. Both the adenolymphoma and glomus caroticum tumour were successfully removed surgically.

The scimitar syndrome confirmed by 320-slice computerized tomography.

Scimitar syndrome is a relatively rare variety of congenital heart disease characterized by partial or complete anomalous pulmonary venous connection of the right lung into the inferior vena cava. There are virtually no reports of the use of 320-slice computed tomography in establishing the diagnosis. The investigators present a case of scimitar syndrome confirmed by 320-slice computed tomography.

Noninvasive investigation of asymmetrically conjoined tripus twins with features of rachipagus, parapagus dicephalus, and cephalopagus.

A hypothetical mechanism for conjoined twinning postulated by Spencer ([2003] Developmental Malformations and Clinical Implications, Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, p 1-476) suggests that, after separation, monovular twins fuse in one of eight predictable homologous sites. The tripus fetal specimen under study embodies characteristics of three types therefore preventing it from classification into a simple variant of any one of the eight twin types described by Spencer. The aim of this study was to reveal internal structural anomalies of the fetal specimen by using magnetic resonanc

Computed tomography colonography in 2014: an update on technique and indications.

Twenty years after its introduction, computed tomographic colonography (CTC) has reached its maturity, and it can reasonably be considered the best radiological diagnostic test for imaging colorectal cancer (CRC) and polyps. This examination technique is less invasive than colonoscopy (CS), easy to perform, and standardized. Reduced bowel preparation and colonic distention using carbon dioxide favor patient compliance. Widespread implementation of a new image reconstruction algorithm has minimized radiation exposure, and the use of dedicated software with enhanced views has enabled easier imag

Prospective study on diagnostic and prognostic significance of postoperative FDG PET/CT in recurrent colorectal carcinoma patients: comparison with MRI and tumor markers.

Current guidelines for follow-up after resection of colorectal cancer (CRC) recommend regular measurements of carcinoembryogenic antigen (CEA) and imaging tests. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are currently primary imaging modalities, while the role of fluorine-18-fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT), which is recommended in patients with negative MDCT and increased CEA, is still uncertain. Our aim was to compare diagnostic performance and prognostic significance of 18F-FDG PET/CT with MRI and tumor…

Adamkiewicz artery visualisation using iterative model-based reconstruction in low-dose computed tomograpyhy (CT) angiography.

AIM: The use of iterative model-based reconstruction (IMR) for the artery of Adamkiewicz (AKA) visualisation using low-dose computed tomography (CT) angiography remains understudied. Therefore, we aimed to compare the image quality and AKA visualisation using a novel knowledge-based IMR with those using hybrid iterative reconstruction (iDose4) and filtered back projection (FBP) under a low-dose CT protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients (73.3% male) with aortic aneurysm or dissection who underwent 256-slice multidetector row CT with a low-dose CT protocol (100 kVp and 20 mA) were

Standardized Protocol to Analyze Computed Tomography Imaging of Type B Aortic Dissections.

PURPOSE: To propose a standard measuring protocol for type B aortic dissections so as to improve comparability between studies reporting aortic dimensions. METHODS: Fifteen computed tomography (CT) scans of type B aortic dissections were measured with a standard protocol by 2 independent observers using postprocessing software. The following parameters were assessed: true, false, and total lumen diameter; true and false lumen volume; and entry tear size, location, and number. Diameters were measured in a perpendicular plane at 2, 10, and 20 cm from the left subclavian artery and 5 cm from the

Multimodality imaging and surgical management of a rare combination: type 2A bridging bronchus, pulmonary artery sling, and atrial septal defect, a case report.

We report the case of a 15-year-old female presenting with exertional syncope and a history of refractory respiratory symptoms. Comprehensive preoperative multimodality imaging-including echocardiography, multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) with three-dimensional reconstruction, and bronchoscopy-revealed a rare complex of congenital anomalies: a type 2 A bridging bronchus (BB), a pulmonary artery sling (PAS), and an atrial septal defect (ASD). Crucially, imaging confirmed the absence of significant tracheal stenosis, thereby obviating the need for tracheoplasty. The patient successfully

Visualization of Right Adrenal Vein in Non-Contrast-Enhanced MDCT and Its Guiding Role for Right Adrenal Venous Sampling.

This study aimed to evaluate the visualization of right adrenal vein (RAV) in non-contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and its guiding role for right adrenal venous sampling (AVS) in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA). A total of 237 patients diagnosed with PA who underwent successful AVS procedures from January 2020 to March 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The non-contrast-enhanced MDCT image features of RAV included the degree of visualization and the position of RAV orifice. Subsequently, the concordance degree between RAV in non-contrast-enhanced MDCT and A

ANATOMICAL VARIABILITY OF THE ALVEOLAR PROCESS OF THE MAXILLA BASED ON MULTISLICE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY DATA.

UNLABELLED: Modern research methods, widely implemented in routine medical practice, open new horizons for the study of anatomical structures. The maxilla is one of the regions of the human skull that shows significant variability with age and gender. This is due to the peculiarities of tooth eruption and age-related changes in the periodontium and adjacent structures, which undoubtedly affect the structure of the alveolar process, sometimes drastically altering it over time. The aim of our study was to determine the anatomical variability of the alveolar process of the maxilla based on multis

Left atrial appendage filling defect in exclusive early-phase scanning of dual-phase cardiac computed tomography: An indicator for elevated thromboembolic risk.

BACKGROUND: Dual-phase cardiac computed tomography (CCT) has been applied to detect left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombosis, which is characterized as the presence of left atrial appendage filling defects (LAADF) in both early- and delayed-phase scanning. However, the clinical implication of LAAFD in exclusive early-phase scanning (LAAFD-EEpS) of CCT in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is unclear. METHODS: The baseline clinical data and dual-phase CCT findings in 1183 AF patients (62.1 ± 11.6 years, 59.9% male) was collected and analyzed. A further analysis of CCT and transesophageal ech

How Age and Frequency Impact the Thyroid Cartilages of Professional Singers.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Young professional singers can easily reach very high pitches. In contrast, older singers often complain that they have to exert substantially more laryngopharyngeal force to reach the same high pitch compared with their earlier years. Various factors such as the property changes of the mucosa and ossification that impact the singing apparatus were suggested as explanations in the literature. The aim of this study was to analyze thyroid deformation-and thereby stiffness indirectly-during singing as a potential reason for this phenomenon. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

Hourglass-shaped right ventricle and localized constrictive pericarditis.

Constrictive pericarditis is characterized by thick pericardial fibrosis and frequent calcification that progressively impairs diastolic filling of the heart. The diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis has been challenging even though multiple diagnostic modalities have been developed. The diagnosis of constructive pericarditis is especially difficult in localized constrictive pericarditis which is extremely rare. We report a case of localized constrictive pericarditis with a 3D multislice cardiac computed tomography (CT) finding of the constrictive band causing strangulation and hourglass sha

Imaging of Right-to-Left Shunt in an Adult Patient with Unroofed Coronary Sinus with Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava.

A 54-year-old woman with a history of multiple cardiac surgeries suffered from hypoxemia caused by a right-to-left intra-cardiac shunt due to coronary sinus (CS) anomaly with persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC). Both the contrast echocardiography and enhanced computed tomography (CT) provided conclusive diagnosis of this rare congenital anomaly, which was overlooked for a long time. However, an important diagnostic clue was left-arm injection of the contrast media. In the present case, previously performed enhanced CT with its routine manner, i.e., contrast through the right arm, missed

Surgical Treatment of Coronary to Pulmonary Artery Fistulas in Adults.

Coronary to pulmonary artery fistulas (CPAFs) are abnormal communications between the coronary and pulmonary arteries. They are an uncommon congenital heart disease and usually remain asymptomatic until later in life. However, there is no consensus on their management. We present four adult patients who required surgery for coronary to pulmonary artery fistulas to illuminate this issue. The clinical presentations were variable depending on the anatomical features of coronary to pulmonary artery fistulas and the presence or absence of other cardiac diseases. We successfully performed surgical c
