Evidence that periodontal pressoreceptors provide positive feedback to jaw closing muscles during mastication.

1. Mastication was produced by stimulation of the right motor-sensory cortex of urethan-anesthetized rabbits with 15-s trains of shocks (1-ms duration) at 50 Hz. Movements of the lower jaw and jaw muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded on magnetic tape for later computer analysis. 2. The stimulus site was chosen, and stimulus intensity adjusted, so that stereotyped movements were produced that included a wide swing of the mandible to the left side during jaw closure. 3. Control trials were alternated with trials in which a steel ball (2 mm diam) was thrust between the anterior molar teeth

[Clinical assessment of pyloric sphincter function in different variants of denervation].

A comparative evaluation of the function of pylorus sphincters was made on the basis of clinical examination of 152 patients after operations performed by the methods of A. E. Zakharov (in 31 patients), A. A. Shalimov-Maki (in 31 patients) and by the author's method (in 90 patients). The variant of the author's operation where only the extraorganic nerve connections were preserved proved to be better in functional respect since no disturbance of the motor-evacuation function took place.

Factors influencing the altered pain perception in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

Recent studies have demonstrated a hypoalgesia in hypertensive subjects. This study reports and evaluates factors responsible for the expression of the hypoalgesic behavior demonstrated by genetically hypertensive rats of the Okamoto-Aoki strain (SHR) as compared to normotensive age-matched Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Analgesiometric assays were conducted by the hot plate method. SHR's hypoalgesic behavior was reversed by subcutaneously administered naloxone. The intravenous administration of naloxone did not alter arterial pressure or heart rate in either SHR or WKY. Subcutaneous administration

Involuntary, electrically excitable nerve transfer for denervation: results from an animal model.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of "paralyzed" nerve transfer (ie, transfer of an involuntary, nondegenerated, electrically excitable nerve onto an involuntary, degenerated, non-electrically excitable nerve) and functional electrical stimulation for reinnervation. We hypothesized that lower motor neuron cell body continuity with the motor cortex, via intact upper motor neurons, is not necessary for reinnervation of the extremities. METHODS: Fischer 344 rats had lower thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) followed by unilateral tibial nerve transection and delayed p

Characteristics of experimental recurrent laryngeal nerve surgical injury in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: We characterized various recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries in dogs. METHODS: Sixteen dogs were classified as having complete injuries (transection) or incomplete injuries (ligation, half-section, and crush). The characteristics of nerve injuries were evaluated by endoscopic examination, laryngeal electromyography (LEMG), and histopathologic examination at 0 to 12 months after the injury. RESULTS: After the RLN injury, the average muscle fiber diameter and the average muscle bundle diameter of the affected muscles were decreased, and the average number of muscular cell nucl

Increased sensitivity of gastrin cells to gastric distension following antral denervation in the rat.

1. Secretion of the antral hormone gastrin is increased by protein in the gastric lumen and by nervous reflexes. We have examined the relative importance of luminal and neuronal mechanisms, by lesioning the antral innervation using benzalkonium chloride. 2. Benzalkonium chloride was applied to the serosa of the antrum in anaesthetized rats. In some animals, a stainless-steel cannula was also implanted in the corpus. Animals were allowed 10 days to recover. Plasma gastrin was measured by radioimmunoassay and mRNAs encoding gastrin, somatostatin and histidine decarboxylase were measured by North

[Results of surgical treatment of radio-humeral epicondylopathy].

We examined extent and affection of an assumed neuromuscular transmission disorder by performing a prospective clinical study on 75 patients with therapy-resistant radiohumeral epicondylopathy. Before operation, we electromyographically diagnosed an increased rate of polyphasic potentials of the long wrist extensors as well as a prolonged motor latency of the respective muscles. Corresponding to a hereby implied damage to the distal part of the motor neuron, disordered neuromuscular recruitment combined with a reduced maximum strength and -elasticity could be proven. Both effects were signific

Differences in sensitivity of rat mesenteric small arteries to agonists when studied as ring preparations or as cannulated preparations.

1. Pharmacological experiments on vascular tissue are normally performed on isometric ring or strip preparations. The aim of this study was to compare the isometric characteristics with the characteristics obtained if vessels were examined under the more physiologically appropriate isobaric condition. 2. Rat mesenteric small arteries were mounted either on two steel wires for isometric force measurement (wire-myograph) or cannulated for measurement of the internal diameter under isobaric conditions (pressure-myograph). 3. The passive pressure-diameter characteristics of the small arteries were

A possible role for food-based citrus bioactive compounds in bridging the gap between prevalence of diabetes and the effectiveness of current treatments.

Voluntary muscle is the largest human organ system. The musculotendinous contractual unit sustains posture against gravity and actuates movement against inertia. Muscular injury can occur when soft tissues are exposed to single or recurrent episodes of biomechanical overloading. Muscular pain is often attributed to a myofascial pain disorder, a condition originally described by Drs Janet Travell and David Simons. Among patients seeking treatment from a variety of medical specialists, myofascial pain has been reported to vary from 30% to 93% depending on the subspecialty practice and setting. F

Do not forget the brachial plexus-prevalence of distal brachial plexus pathology on routine shoulder MRI.

OBJECTIVES: Most of the shoulder magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination focuses on internal joint structures but disregarding other structures like the distal brachial plexus, which may miss important findings. Hereby, we attempt to evaluate the prevalence of distal brachial plexus abnormalities and/or muscular denervation changes seen on routine shoulder MRI examinations and discuss common pathologies affecting the distal brachial plexus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 701 routine shoulder MRI studies were evaluated. The evaluation of each exam was focused on the visualized brachial

[Clinical, electrophysiological and molecular study of 26 chilean patients with spinal muscular atrophy].

BACKGROUND: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy, linked to the homozygous disruption of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. It is the leading genetic cause of infant death. It has been classified into three types based on the severity of symptoms. Type I SMA is the most severe form with death within the first 2 years of life. Type II and III SMA patients show intermediate and mild forms of the disorder. AIM: To describe the clinical and electrophysiological findings

Mouse models of sarcopenia: classification and evaluation.

Sarcopenia is a progressive and widespread skeletal muscle disease that is related to an increased possibility of adverse consequences such as falls, fractures, physical disabilities and death, and its risk increases with age. With the deepening of the understanding of sarcopenia, the disease has become a major clinical disease of the elderly and a key challenge of healthy ageing. However, the exact molecular mechanism of this disease is still unclear, and the selection of treatment strategies and the evaluation of its effect are not the same. Most importantly, the early symptoms of this disea

A case of late-onset OCD developing PLS and FTD.

We describe a 64-year-old woman, suffering from late-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from the age of 57, who developed dysarthria and dysphagia, spastic diplegic, and proximal muscles weakness. Needle electromyography showed no active denervation. Neuropsychological evaluation showed intact cognitive functioning. We diagnosed upper motor neuron disease (MND), with no known genetic correlates. Brain magnetic resonance (MRI) detected bilateral hippocampal atrophy with sclerosis of right hippocampus. 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) showed moderate right temporal cortex thinni

Asymptomatic Severe Vagal and Sympathetic Cardiac Denervation in Holmes-Adie's Syndrome.

A 40-year-old woman was found to have bilateral Adie's pupils and generalized muscle stretch areflexia. She did not have orthostatic hypotension but, in an ECG strip in the office, she appeared to have an almost fixed heart rate. We thus studied the heart rate variability (HRV) and the systolic blood pressure variability (SBPV) in supine and standing position and also during rhythmic breathing. We found a decreased HRV in the time domain with very low standard deviation in supine and standing position and during rhythmic breathing. HRV in the frequency domain was low with a decrease in the abs

Imaging Findings in Patients with Zoster-Associated Plexopathy.

Herpes zoster is a reactivation of the latent varicella zoster virus. Among the complications of herpes zoster is zoster-associated limb paresis. The clinical and imaging features of patients with zoster-associated limb paresis due to plexopathies (zoster-associated plexopathy) have had limited description in the literature. The Mayo Clinic patient data base was searched by diagnostic code for patients diagnosed with herpes zoster between January 1, 1996, and September 30, 2012. Patients who met the inclusion criteria for zoster-associated limb paresis or herpes zoster with MRIs obtained were

The lateral thoracic nerve and the cutaneous maximus muscle--a novel in vivo model system for nerve degeneration and regeneration studies.

We report a novel in vivo mouse model system to study regeneration of injured motor nerve and spatiotemporal pattern of denervation in experimental nerve diseases. The lateral thoracic nerve (LTN), as a pure motor nerve, innervates the cutaneous maximus muscle (CMM) by some of the shortest and the longest motor nerve fibers in the mouse body. Its branches and nerve terminals can be imaged in whole mount preparations. Here we describe the branching pattern of the LTN and its innervation of the CMM, and characterize degeneration and regeneration over time after a LTN crush by morphological and e

Parsonage-Turner syndrome revealing Lyme borreliosis.

Parsonage-Turner syndrome, also known as acute brachial neuritis or neuralgic amyotrophy, can be caused by various infectious agents. We report on four patients who experienced Parsonage-Turner syndrome as the first manifestation of Lyme disease. The clinical picture was typical, with acute shoulder pain followed rapidly by weakness and wasting of the shoulder girdle muscles. Electrophysiological testing showed denervation. A single patient reported erythema chronicum migrans after a tick bite. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid showed lymphocytosis and protein elevation in 3 patients. Ser

[Gunshot injuries of peripheral nervous system: the questions of classification and diagnostics].

Two hundreds and sixty-seven patients with gunshot injuries of 394 nerves and plexus underwent clinical and electromyographic investigation and H-reflex evaluation as well. Based on the results of the data obtained, 3 types of nerves trunk injuries: neuroapraxia, axonothmesis and neurothmesis, were identified. The reduction of biopotential amplitude and synergic muscular activity, decrease of impulse conduction velocities (ICVeff--up to 30%), M-response amplitude (up to 50% and more) and motor units functioning were characteristic of neuroapraxia of nerve trunks. Axonothmesis of nerve trunks f

Matrix metalloproteinases in inflammatory myopathies: enhanced immunoreactivity near atrophic myofibers.

OBJECTIVES: To further examine the role of proteolytic enzyme expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and T-cell markers in inflammatory myopathies and controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied the expression of MMP-2, MMP-7, and MMP-9 in 19 cases of inflammatory myopathies and controls using immunocytochemistry. RESULTS: Inflammatory myopathies showed distinct patterns of up-regulation of MMP. MMP-9 was strongly expressed in atrophic myofibers in all inflammatory myopathies. MMP-2 immunoreactivity was similar in its distribution, however, to a weaker intensity. In dermatomyositis the
