Comparative Molecular Analysis of Gram-Negative Bacteria in Primary Teeth with Irreversible Pulpitis or Periapical Pathology.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the Gram-negative pathogens identified in the root canals of primary teeth with irreversible inflammatory pulpitis and in teeth showing apical periodontitis. Methods: Samples were collected from 123 root canals of primary teeth from three- to seven-year-old patients. Root canals were assigned to either group one (irreversible inflammatory pulpitis; n equals 63) or group two (pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis; n equals 60). Total number of cells of selected Gram-negative microorganisms was determined by the checkerboard DNA-D

Odontogenic cervical necrotizing fasciitis, etiological aspects.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but very severe infection that affects the soft-tissues of the cephalic extremity. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis most frequently occurs secondarily to inflammatory odontogenic disorders and represents the most severe infection of maxillofacial spaces, with a high lethal potential. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we selected 55 patients with confirmed cervical necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic origin, treated in the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Cluj-Napoca during January 1996-December 2012. RESULTS: In the majorit

[The treatment of apical periodontitis by using combined exposure to focal measured vacuum and local d'Arsonval treatment].

Vacuum d'Arsonval treatment was employed in the treatment of 95 patients with various forms of chronic periodontitis. After tooth filling local vacuum d'Arsonval treatment was dosed for time (3 min on the vestibular and oral surface), strength of current (1-15 microA), length of discharge interval (3-4 mm), vacuum intensity (400-500 mm Hg), number of sessions (3-4 every 3 days). A 2-year follow-up has shown that vacuum d'Arsonval treatment prevented exacerbations after filling in 63 percent of cases and that in was conducive to accelerating regeneration of periodontal tissue (in 60 percent) as

Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in pulpal and periapical inflammation and periapical root-canal exudates.

Weight gain induced by antipsychotics is the second most frequently given reason for noncompliance with pharmacologic therapy; excessive sedative effects rank first, with extrapyramidal side effects ranking third. Frequently, weight gain leads to inconsistent pharmacologic treatment; this exposes patients to the risk of recurrent symptoms. In fact, one of the key contributors to good clinical outcomes in schizophrenic patients is compliance with pharmacologic treatment. The goals of this study were to evaluate weight gain in a group of patients treated with olanzapine, diet modifications, and

Regenerative Endodontic Treatment versus Apical Plug in Immature Teeth: Three-Year Follow-Up.

This report compares and evaluates the treatment outcomes of regenerative endodontic treatment and apical plug as two accepted treatment protocols in a pair of necrotic immature maxillary central incisors of a 12-year old female. The patient was referred complaining of a dull pain and swelling in her upper lip area. She had a history of trauma to the anterior maxilla two years earlier. Both teeth were clinically diagnosed with pulp necrosis and periapical radiographs revealed that separate periapical radiolucent lesions surrounded the immature apices of both teeth. The left and right incisors

Predicting severe pain after root canal therapy in the National Dental PBRN.

Some patients experience severe pain following root canal therapy (RCT) despite advancements in care. We sought to identify factors, which can be measured preoperatively, that predict this negative outcome so that future research may focus on preemptive steps to reduce postoperative pain intensity. Sixty-two practitioners (46 general dentists and 16 endodontists) who are members of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network enrolled patients receiving RCT for this prospective observational study. Baseline data collected from patients and dentists were obtained before treatment. Severe

P. Gingivalis induce macrophage polarization by regulating hepcidin expression in chronic apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Hepcidin, a central regulatory molecule of iron metabolism, is upregulated through the IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway in inflammatory and infectious states, contributing to the pathogenesis of various diseases. In chronic apical periodontitis (CAP), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and its lipopolysaccharides (LPS) activate various immune responses in vivo, contributing to disease progression. This study evaluated the role and mechanism of hepcidin in P. gingivalis-induced bone tissue damage in CAP, focusing on its promotion of macrophage M1 polarization via the IL-6/STAT3

An interdisciplinary treatment approach combining orthodontic forced eruption with immediate implant placement to achieve a satisfactory treatment outcome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease often results in severely bony defects around the teeth and leads to eventual extraction. Remaining bone morphology often compromises ideally restoration-driven positions and deteriorates the success rates for dental implants. PURPOSE: The present investigation illustrates the clinical outcome of immediately installing an implant following orthodontic forced eruption and atraumatic extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subject of this study is a 40-year-old Asian female with a right mandibular first molar that had a deep probing depth on the mesial side and mo
