What factors place children with speech sound disorders at risk for reading problems?

PURPOSE: To identify weaknesses in print awareness and phonological processing that place children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) at increased risk for reading difficulties. METHOD: Language, literacy, and phonological skills of 3 groups of preschool-age children were compared: a group of 68 children with SSDs, a group of 68 peers with normal speech matched on receptive vocabulary, and a group of 68 peers with normal speech and language. RESULTS: The SSD group demonstrated impairments in expressive phonological awareness (ts = 3.45 to 8.17, ps < .001, effect size [ES] = 0.51 to 1.04), re

Intellectual ability of Mandarin-speaking children using cochlear implants.

The aim of this study was to assess the verbal and performance intelligence of young Mandarin-speaking cochlear implant users with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). We also analyzed whether related factors helped develop verbal and performance IQs. We studied 60 children implanted with Nucleus 24 devices; the children represented a consecutive sample of every implantee aged 6 or older from 2002 to 2006. All subjects had 1 year to 8 years and 7 months of implant experience. Five children with known neurological, developmental delay and multiple handicaps were excluded. Intell

Multicenter prospective study on the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany. METHODS: We enrolled patients who were scheduled for total laryngectomy, approached them again after surgery, after 3 months and 1 year. Patients completed questionnaires and were interviewed. RESULTS: Of 309 participants, 14% had not received any rehabilitation. Reasons for nonuse were primarily ongoing treatment and poor health. Users of rehabilitation had 4 times the odds of attaining any ability to speak compared to nonusers (odds ratio 3.8, P = .02). The main ai

Speech in unilateral and bilateral cleft palate patients from Stockholm.

The speech of 84 patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and 19 patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate was judged by professional listeners and compared with a control group of 40 noncleft subjects. The unilateral cleft group consisted of two subgroups: one group of 45 patients, who were treated with presurgical orthopedics before primary surgery, and one group of 39 patients, who were not. The speech of the patients and the noncleft subjects was tape recorded and randomly mixed prior to listener judgments. No significant differences in articulation or resonance w

Preprocessing and Capability-Risk Coupling in an Event-Synchronized Dual-Frontend Speech Sensor System.

An intelligent speech sensor is often evaluated at recognition output, although acquisition and preprocessing also determine what reaches control. We examine this propagation in an event-synchronized dual-frontend system. A conditional cascade separates artifact availability, evidence formation, semantic conversion, and executor persistence. It decomposes how scheduled intent survives to the action boundary from raw audio through controlled motion. Paired recordings compare an INMP441-ESP32 interface with a USB interface. In an exploratory study, five speakers each delivered 30 Chinese utteran

Feature fusion method for pulmonary tuberculosis patient detection based on cough sound.

Since the COVID-19, cough sounds have been widely used for screening purposes. Intelligent analysis techniques have proven to be effective in detecting respiratory diseases. In 2021, there were up to 10 million TB-infected patients worldwide, with an annual growth rate of 4.5%. Most of the patients were from economically underdeveloped regions and countries. The PPD test, a common screening method in the community, has a sensitivity of as low as 77%. Although IGRA and Xpert MTB/RIF offer high specificity and sensitivity, their cost makes them less accessible. In this study, we proposed a featu

Measuring Articulatory Patterns in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Using a Data-Driven Articulatory Consonant Distinctiveness Space Approach.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to leverage data-driven approaches, including a novel articulatory consonant distinctiveness space (ACDS) approach, to better understand speech motor control in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). METHOD: Electromagnetic articulography was used to record tongue and lip movement data during the production of 10 consonants from healthy controls (n = 15) and individuals with ALS (n = 47). To assess phoneme distinctness, speech data were analyzed using two classification algorithms, Procrustes matching (PM) and support vector machine (SVM), and the area/volume

Role of artificial intelligence in analyzing human behavior and predicting personality traits and personality disorders.

Traditional approaches to the diagnosis of personality disorders, including a clinical interview and a self-report, are usually limited by subjectivity and time constraints. Recent developments in artificial intelligence have opened the possibility of more objective and data-driven psychological testing. This paper introduces an AI-powered system that forecasts personality disorders using natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition, and face recognition. The suggested method should help with the initial diagnosis and more tailored mental health solutions. Two benchmark datasets were

Knowledge and attitudes toward people who stutter among health sciences students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The social model of disability acknowledges that the difficulties faced by persons who stutter (PWS) stem not only from speech dysfluency but also from societal barriers, misconceptions, and stigmatizing attitudes that limit participation and inclusion. As future healthcare professionals, health sciences students play an important role in promoting early detection, proper referral, and supportive care. However, there is limited research about their knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes around stuttering, particularly in Palestine and underserved areas. METHODS: A cross-sectional study

Resolution of stuttering during ketamine treatment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering may include repetition of words in whole or part, difficulty saying words, and elongated pauses in speech. Approximately 5% of children stutter for a period lasting 6 months or more. Most of those children stop stuttering as they approach adulthood, but the condition persists in approximately 1% of adults. The cause of stuttering is unknown. Adults who stutter face substantial burdens in many aspects of their lives. Stutterers may choose not to pursue meaningful employment opportunities, may not be hired for positions they seek, or may be denied promotions or positive pe

Positive and inverse correlation of blood lead level with erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase and intelligence quotient in children: implications for neurotoxicity.

Blood lead level (BLL) is insufficiently sensitive for early detection of Lead-induced neurotoxicity (LIN). This study determined the possible role of the combination of BLL, intelligent quotient (IQ) and erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the early detection of LIN in Children. Apparently healthy children (n=309) from eight public primary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria were recruited and classified into: children with Elevated BLL (EBLL) and children with Acceptable BLL (control) based on CDC cut-off for childhood lead exposure. Neurological indices (speech, memory, cranial nerve

Validation of an AI-assisted Treatment Outcome Measure for Gender-Affirming Voice Care: Comparing AI Accuracy to Listener's Perception of Voice Femininity.

OBJECTIVES: There is currently a lack of objective treatment outcome measures for transgender individuals undergoing gender-affirming voice care. Recently, Bensoussan et al developed an AI model that is able to generate a voice femininity rating based on a short voice sample provided through a smartphone application. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of using this model as a treatment outcome measure by comparing its performance to human listeners. Additionally, we examined the effect of two different training datasets on the model's accuracy and performance when present

Speech perception in medico-legal assessment of hearing disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Examination of Danish data for medico-legal compensations regarding hearing disabilities. The study purposes are: (1) to investigate whether discrimination scores (DSs) relate to patients' subjective experience of their hearing and communication ability (the latter referring to audio-visual perception), (2) to compare DSs from different discrimination tests (auditory/audio-visual perception and without/with noise), and (3) to relate different handicap measures in the scaling used for compensation purposes in Denmark. DESIGN: Data from a 15 year period (1999-2014) were collected and

Fitting prelingually deafened adult cochlear implant users based on electrode discrimination performance.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the hypotheses that (1) prelingually deafened CI users do not have perfect electrode discrimination ability and (2) the deactivation of non-discriminable electrodes can improve auditory performance. DESIGN: Electrode discrimination difference limens were determined for all electrodes of the array. The subjects' basic map was subsequently compared to an experimental map, which contained only discriminable electrodes, with respect to speech understanding in quiet and in noise, listening effort, spectral ripple discrimination and subjective appreciation. Functional outcome in soft palate reconstruction using a radial forearm free flap in conjunction with a superiorly based pharyngeal flap.

BACKGROUND: Speech and swallowing problems due to velopharyngeal incompetence may follow soft palate resection and reconstruction. Over the past 3 years, we have developed the use of a superiorly based pharyngeal flap in conjunction with a radial forearm flap for soft palate reconstruction. METHODS: This paper describes the technique in detail and compares the functional results in a study with patients undergoing soft palate resection for squamous cell carcinoma treated with or without a pharyngeal flap as an adjunct to a radial forearm free flap for soft palate reconstruction. Advancing Alzheimer Disease Prediction With Large Language Model-Based Linguistic Feature Analysis: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with rapidly growing global prevalence. Early detection is critical for timely intervention; yet, conventional diagnostic methods remain costly and invasive. Speech-based assessment has emerged as a noninvasive alternative, as AD characteristically impairs linguistic abilities including fluency, coherence, and informational content. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) offer new opportunities to extract structured linguistic features from transcribed speech for automated AD classification. However, existi

Investigating the Effects of Paralinguistic Configuration in Background Human Speech on Attention: Protocol for a Within-Subject Study.

BACKGROUND: Background noise is common in everyday environments; yet, its effects on attention vary according to task demands, individual characteristics, and properties of the noise itself. Previous research has largely focused on music, nonspeech noise, or intelligible speech, leaving the effects of paralinguistic components of human speech (eg, tone, pitch, and rhythm) difficult to disentangle from linguistic content. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether paralinguistic characteristics of semantically inaccessible background speech influence attentional performance. Specificall

Decreased Depression 12 Months After Cochlear Implantation Is Not Associated With Improved Cognitive Performance.

OBJECTIVES: Adults with bilateral late-onset hearing loss are at risk for depression and altered cognitive performance. We were interested in whether an improvement in hearing after cochlear implantation (CI) was associated with changes in depression and cognitive performance and whether these changes were related. We hypothesized that 12 mo after CI, hearing ability (speech recognition and subjective hearing) and cognitive performance would improve, and depression would decrease compared with pre-CI status. Furthermore, we hypothesized a negative association between changes in depression and

Adjustments of the amplitude mapping function: Sensitivity of cochlear implant users and effects on subjective preference and speech recognition.

OBJECTIVE: In sound processors of cochlear implant (CI) users, input sound signals are analysed in multiple frequency channels. The amplitude mapping function (AMF) is the output compression function dictating the conversion from (acoustical) channel output levels to (electrical) current levels used for electrode stimulation. This study focused on the detectability of AMF adjustments by CI users and the effects of detectable AMF adjustments on subjective preference and performance. DESIGN: Just noticeable differences (JNDs) for AMF settings were measured for pre-processed sentences at 60 dB S
