Lyme arthritis in Wisconsin.

Rash, severe constitutional symptoms, and arthritis developed in three persons who were bitten by ticks in Wisconsin. On comparison with other reports of arthritis related to tick bites, we found that the illness of our patients had clinical features consistent with Lyme arthritis. Lyme arthritis appears not to be restricted to New England as has been previously reported.

Reassortment and migration analysis of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne virus with high pathogenicity to humans. CCHFV contains a three-segment [small (S), medium (M) and large (L)] genome and is prone to reassortment. Investigation of identified reassortment events can yield insight into the evolutionary history of the virus, while migration events reflect its geographical dissemination. While many studies have already considered these issues, they have investigated small numbers of isolates and lack statistical support for their findings. Here, we consider a larger set of 30 full genomes to investiga

Enhanced efficacy of carvacrol and thymol in combination with benzalkonium chloride for the control of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.

The control of Rhipicephalus microplus represents a major challenge for livestock production due to the widespread emergence of tick populations resistant to conventional acaricides, highlighting the need for alternative strategies capable of improving control efficacy. Bioactive constituents of essential oils, such as the phenolic monoterpenes carvacrol and thymol, have demonstrated acaricidal activity, although their performance may vary depending on formulation and exposure conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of carvacrol and thymol in combination with the cationic surfactan

Diversity, Host Attachment Preferences and Role of Tick Rhipicephalus microplus in the Transmission of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp. in Cattle From Southern Benin.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks, particularly Rhipicephalus microplus, are major blood-sucking ectoparasites of livestock, causing considerable economic losses both through their direct pathogenic effects and their role as vectors of infectious agents. However, tick diversity, host association and pathogen carriage remain insufficiently documented in Southern Benin. This study investigated tick species composition, anatomical attachment preferences, host breed associations and the molecular detection of selected bacterial pathogens in six municipalities of Southern Benin. METHODS: Ticks were collected fr

Sporogonic development of Hepatozoon felis in naturally infected Rhipicephalus turanicus and Rhipicephalus rutilus ticks and induction of sporocyst excystation by duodenal fluid.

Hepatozoon felis is a protozoan parasite reported in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with infection rates ranging from 4 % to 30 % in domestic cats in Mediterranean countries. Although the parasite was described in 1908, its arthropod vector has not been reported to date. Ticks removed from cats were dissected to prepare hemocoel smears with the aim of identifying the sporogonic life stages of H. felis. Light and live video microscopy were used to visualize these stages and PCR followed by DNA sequencing served to verify the Hepatozoon sp. found and to morphologically and molecularly def

Parasitism of a US traveler by a nymphal Amblyomma tapirellum Dunn, 1933 (Ixodida: Ixodidae) and review of exotic tick interceptions on humans in the United States.

A resident of Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States removed an engorged nymphal tick after returning from travel to Costa Rica. The tick was identified by cox1 barcoding as Amblyomma tapirellum  Dunn, 1933, a Central American species whose immature stages are undescribed. This species is associated with wet, tropical forests, and most host records come from Baird's tapirs (Tapirus bairdii), though feeding on other mammalian orders and on humans has been observed. To date, no human pathogens have been detected in A. tapirellum, although very few specimens have been tested. The A. tapirellu

The importance of the tortoise tick Hyalomma aegyptium as a carrier of bacterial agents on a wide range.

Ticks are important vectors of various microorganisms, including bacteria. In this study, we examined Hyalomma aegyptium ticks collected from 240 spur-thighed tortoises Testudo graeca at 42 localities in the Mediterranean and Middle East and analysed them for the presence of bacteria of the genera Anaplasma, Borrelia, Coxiella, and Rickettsia. Altogether, 576 out of 928 analysed ticks (62.1%) were positive for at least one of the tested bacteria. The highest prevalence in individual ticks was found for Borrelia turcica (43.6%), followed by Rickettsia (12.3%) and Anaplasma (6.1%). No sample was

Chemical Composition and Acaricidal Activity of Essential Oil of Lavandula dentata L. on Engorged Females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

PURPOSE: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is one the most significant ectoparasite in cattle farming in tropical and subtropical regions, causing problems to livestock health worldwide. The control of this ectoparasite primarily relies on the use of synthetic acaricides. However, the emergence of acaricide resistance has stimulated the search for new control alternatives, including phytocompounds with acaricidal and insecticidal potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acaricidal potential of Lavandula dentata essential oil against the engorged females of R. (B.) microplus. MET

Bartonella infections are rare in blood-fed Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus ticks collected from rodents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus are important vectors of multiple pathogens in the United States. However, their role in transmission of Bartonella spp., which are commonly reported in rodents and fleas, has been debated. Our previous investigation on Bartonella spp. in host-seeking I. scapularis and I. pacificus showed Bartonella spp. were absent in the ticks, suggesting the two species are unlikely to contribute to Bartonella transmission. It is unclear whether the absence of Bartonella spp. in the host-seeking ticks was attributable to ticks not being exposed to Bartonell

Molecular survey of neglected bacterial pathogens reveals an abundant diversity of species and genotypes in ticks collected from animal hosts across Romania.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are transmitting a wide range of bacterial pathogens that cause substantial morbidity and mortality in domestic animals. The full pathogen burden transmitted by tick vectors is incompletely studied in many geographical areas, and extensive studies are required to fully understand the diversity and distribution of pathogens transmitted by ticks. RESULTS: We sampled 824 ticks of 11 species collected in 19 counties in Romania. Ticks were collected mainly from dogs, but also from other domestic and wild animals, and were subjected to molecular screening for pathogens. Rickettsia

Prevalence and distribution of Borrelia and Babesia species in ticks feeding on dogs in the U.K.

Ticks were collected during March-July 2015 from dogs by veterinarians throughout the U.K. and used to estimate current prevalences and distributions of pathogens. DNA was extracted from 4750 ticks and subjected to polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis to identify Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) and Babesia (Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) species. Of 4737 ticks [predominantly Ixodes ricinus Linneaus (Ixodida: Ixodidae)], B. burgdorferi s.l. was detected in 94 (2.0%). Four Borrelia genospecies were identified: Borrelia garinii (41.5%); Borrelia afzelli (31

Pathogens in ectoparasites from free-ranging animals: Infection with Rickettsia asembonensis in ticks, and a potentially new species of Dipylidium in fleas and lice.

Vector-borne infections are persistent public health threats worldwide. In recent years, a number of mosquito-borne viruses have emerged or re-emerged to cause major disease outbreaks. Other vector-borne pathogens, however, remain understudied and much neglected especially in the developing regions of the world including Southeast Asia. In this study, the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, cat louse Felicola subrostratus, and cat fleas Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides orientis collected from free-ranging cats and dogs in Malaysia were molecularly screened for the pres

Manual for maintenance of multi-host ixodid ticks in the laboratory.

Use of laboratory animals as hosts for blood-sucking arthropods remains a time-proven and the most efficient method for establishment and propagation of slowly feeding ixodid ticks, despite introduction of techniques involving artificial feeding on either animal skins or synthetic membranes. New Zealand White rabbits are usually the most accessible and most suitable hosts routinely used for establishment and maintenance of a large variety of multi-host tick species. Here we describe standard procedures for maintaining colonies of multi-host ixodid ticks by feeding all developmental stages (lar

Amblyomma auricularium (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Florida: New Hosts and Distribution Records.

Previous published evidence for the occurrence of an exotic armadillo tick, Amblyomma auricularium (Conil), in Florida is scant, but we found it is fully established and integrated into the state's tick fauna. We collected 11,192 specimens of this tick from naturalized nine-banded armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus L., and 14 other species of wild native mammals and birds in Florida, while sampling statewide during 2004 through 2007. In all, we document its specific presence only in 14 contiguous South Florida counties. Moreover, we report the first collections of A. auricularium from the Virgin
