To determine whether Colles' fracture, generally considered a manifestation of postmenopausal osteoporosis, is associated with a decrease in bone density at the site of fracture, we measured bone mineral density of the ultradistal radius (UDR-BMD) by single-photon absorptiometry with computer-assisted image processing. We measured bone remodeling of the proximal tibia prospectively for 3 years after uncemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in 25 knees with primary arthrosis. The effect of sciatic nerve resection on tibial fracture healing was studied in rats 25 days post-trauma. To prevent differences in loading between sham-operated and nerve-resected animals the fractured limbs were cast-immobilized. To assess mechanisms that cause generalized osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we measured bone mineral density (BMD) by dual photon absorptiometry in the lumbar spine and femoral neck of 111 patients with RA. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Osteoporosis (OP) is characterized by degraded bone microstructure, loss of bone mass and increased risk of fragility fractures. Currently, T-score determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measurements has been regarded as the gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. However, multiple factors have indicated that the T-score is insufficient to identify individuals with osteoporosis at a potentially high risk of fracture, or accurately detect those who require treatment, or continuously monitor the risk of re-fracture and clinical outcomes after treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The human rib provides a vital role in the protection of thoracic contents. Rib fractures are linked to injuries and health complications that can be fatal.
